This regal mansion, built from 1878 to 1894, is home to the Musée Galliera, also called the Musée de la Mode (Fashion Museum), though it opens only for temporary exhibitions on costume and clothing design. Past shows have featured the city-owned museum's vast collection of dresses organized under various themes, such as the "high-tech" crinoline styles of the Second Empire (1852-70). The 2003 Marlene Dietrich show was credited with influencing designers, who incorporated the looks in their runway collections. The lovely garden along Avenue du Président Wilson, restored in 2005 to its 19th-century style, is open even when the museum is not.
