Palace Hotel San Francisco

$$ | 2 New Montgomery St., San Francisco, CA, 94105, USA Fodor's Choice

Open since 1875 and rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake, this legendary hotel continues to be one of the city's elite places to stay, with a prominent location at the border of SoMa and downtown plus a delightful mix of modern amenities (an indoor lap pool beneath a glass-domed ceiling) and deluxe architectural details of a bygone era. The entrance area is a time-traveling stunner, with Austrian crystal chandeliers and eight pairs of bronze-filigree marble columns supporting a magnificent dome ceiling. The former carriage entrance, which reemerged as crystal-roofed The Garden Court restaurant, is a favorite of ladies who lunch and those who enjoy an elaborate Sunday brunch (it's also where Green Goddess salad dressing was invented). Even if you're not staying here, sip a cocktail at the Pied Piper Bar, named for its Maxfield Parrish painting.

Pros

  • Oozes history and Gilded Age grandeur
  • Well-trained staff
  • Excellent fitness center

Cons

  • Entrance is frequently understaffed

Palms Casino Resort Spa

$ | 4321 W. Flamingo Rd., Las Vegas, NV, 89103, USA Fodor's Choice

The Palms is the rare property that appeals to equal mixes of locals and visitors, thanks to its variety of upscale amenities, convenient parking, relative proximity to the Strip, and attractive gaming odds; it also has large, modern, opulent rooms. The Palms is the place where you can spend $175 on a steakhouse's \"seafood tower\" or hit Panda Express at the food court before catching a movie. Despite its wide appeal, it had some pandemic-fueled lean years and emerged from a two-year shutdown under the ownership of the San Manuel tribe. It managed to retain some favorites, including the skyview Vetri Cucina, the Scotch 80 Prime steakhouse, and Mabel's BBQ. The A.Y.C.E (All You Can Eat) Buffet is now the rare buffet in the resort corridor. The rooftop Ghostbar has stunning views of the Strip. The sprawling pool area hosts \"daylife\" events in the spring and summer. The Pearl concert hall books the likes of Elvis Costello and DL Hughley. The property's various classes of suites are far more elaborate (the best, the 10,000-square-foot Sky Villas, feature private hot tubs cantilevered over the edge of the building). The Fantasy Tower has two \"Party Floors,\" which include the Kingpin and Hardwood suites, complete with a bowling alley and basketball court, respectively. For a tamer Palms experience, ask for a room at the more Palms Place condo tower, which has its own private pool and a separate restaurant.

Pros

  • Upscale restaurants from Marc Vetri and Michael Symon
  • Keeping the buffet alive
  • Free, plentiful parking

Cons

  • Not a great walk from the Strip
  • Players club doesn't connect with any other Las Vegas properties
  • Slightly schizophrenic clash between high- and low-end offerings

Paradise Guest Ranch

$$$$ | 282 Hunter Creek Rd., Buffalo, WY, 82834, USA Fodor's Choice

Not only does this dude ranch have a stunning location at the base of some of the tallest mountains in the range, but it's also one of the oldest (circa 1907) and most progressive, as evidenced by its adults-only month (September) and two ladies' weeks. The rest of the summer has extensive children's programs, with everything from overnight pack trips to a kids' rodeo. Adult programs involve sing-alongs and fancy barbecues. The wranglers are very careful about matching riders to appropriate horses; multiday trips venture into the Bighorn National Forest and Cloud Peak Wilderness Area. Three full-time guides on staff take guests on fly-fishing excursions. Cabins are simple. Some have fireplaces; all have full baths and kitchenettes. There's a one-week minimum stay; ask about 30% discounts in June.

Pros

  • Clean cabins with rustic, beautiful views
  • Hospitable staff
  • Good children's programs

Cons

  • Minimum stays
  • Not so close to Buffalo

Parker Palm Springs

$$$$ | 4200 E. Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs, CA, 92264, USA Fodor's Choice

At what is definitely not your grandad's luxury hotel, a cacophony of color, retro accessories, Moroccan textiles, and flamboyant art masterfully assembled by designer Jonathan Adler is paired with lush, mazelike grounds; attentive service; and amenities that include three saltwater pools, cozy firepits, free EV charging, clay tennis courts, pétanque, morning barista services, and a huge spa that looks like a Wes Anderson film set. The hip but rarefied air attracts a well-heeled and worldly clientele, who seem to enjoy not only the smell of the citrus trees and the jangly beats of a clubby soundtrack but also the wee bit of pretension. All accommodations—whether they be poolside kings, villas with multiple bathrooms and wooden swings, or quarters in the former Gene Autry residence—have private outdoor space that, in some cases, features a hammock secluded behind tall shrubs. PGA National Resort & Spa

$$$ | 400 Ave. of the Champions, FL, 33418, USA Fodor's Choice

This golfer's paradise, home to five championship courses and the site of the yearly Honda Classic pro-tour tournament, is a sleek modern playground with a gorgeous zero-entry lagoon pool, seven different places to eat, and a full-service spa with unique mineral-salt therapy pools. The clubhouse is massive, but since the course is open only to hotel guests and members, the greens are not overcrowded. In 2022, the resort unveiled a $100 million overhaul, which gave rooms a 1960s feel, with wing-back headboards, custom vintage black-and-white palm-leaf wallpaper, and plush area rugs.  At the spacious pool, comfy loungers abound, and servers rush over to take your drink order. The spa, which is open to the public and very well respected by locals for its frequent packages, was reimagined by Venus Williams–founded design group V Starr. It includes two Himalayan salt rooms and outdoor therapy pools—two with healing salts from the Dead Sea and France's Pyrenees and a cold plunge—a real treat.

Pros

  • Dream golf facilities
  • Affordable rates for top-notch amenities
  • Close to shopping malls

Cons

  • No beach shuttle
  • Difficult to get around if you don't have a car
  • Long drive to Palm Beach proper
