Manor on Golden Pond

$$$ | 31 Manor Rd., Holderness, NH, 03245, USA

A name like this is a lot to live up to, but the Manor generally succeeds: it's one of the region's most atmospheric inns, situated on a slight rise overlooking Squam Lake, with 15 acres of lawns, towering pines, and hardwood trees; the grand Van Horn Dining Room for refined contemporary fare; and a small but well-outfitted spa. The rooms, most with wood-burning fireplaces and more than half with double whirlpool tubs, have a British country theme, and canopy beds, vintage blanket chests, and tartan fabrics fill the sumptuous bedchambers. Drinks in the endearing Isaac Bistro & Pub is a memorable way to finish the evening.

Pros

  • Fireplaces and Jacuzzis in many rooms
  • Gracious common spaces
  • Afternoon high tea is served in the library

Cons

  • The top-tier suites are quite expensive
  • Furnishings could stand a little refreshing
  • Not suitable for younger kids

Mansion on Sutter

$$$ | 1409 Sutter St., San Francisco, CA, 94109, USA

San Francisco doesn't get much more old-school elegant than this Lower Pac Heights Victorian mansion transformed into a luxurious, intimate lodging with spacious, individually decorated rooms. Mill Creek Farm

$$ | 2348 Quarry Rd., Buckingham, PA, 18912, USA

Like most old Bucks County farmhouses (the oldest part of the house dates to 1730), this one has been expanded over the years. Guest rooms are named for presidents. In the George Washington Suite, the master bedroom has stone walls and a beam ceiling. The second bedroom, which is great for children, has a bed tucked in an alcove, which is painted to look like a four-poster bed.

Rooms are comfortably furnished, warm, and inviting at this circa-1780 inn set beside the large, unspoiled Damariscotta Lake, where casual afternoon gatherings on the deck and hammocks-for-two overlooking the water make the most of the location. $$ | 506 Sharon Tpke., Millbrook, NY, 12545, USA

The house, built in 1810, was remodeled in 1838 when classical detailing was all the rage (witness the majestic columns in the front hall). If the interior recalls 17th-century Italy, it's because most of the furniture came from the current owner's palazzo near Modena. Elegant marquetry tables grace the parlors and lush silk draperies dress many windows. Extensive gardens surround the house, and a sculpture garden displays works by local artists. A lovely bed-and-breakfast in leafy Society Hill, Morris House is within walking distance of historic Old City, the Pine Street shopping corridor, and Center City to the north, but it's away from other hotels and touristy spots, giving visitors an authentic neighborhood experience.
