Recommended Fodor's Video

The Jay, Autograph Collection

$$$ | 433 Clay St., San Francisco, CA, 94111, USA

As one of the few hotels to open in the downtown area in recent years, this Bonvoy branded property adds a very welcome jolt of energy to the city's flagship business district. Design firm powerhouse AvroKO created the sleek look that balances a sharp modern aesthetic with the original 1980's Brutalist concrete building by architect John Portman. The spiral staircase at the entrance and the unique diagonal floor-to-ceilings in rooms are the two most notable examples of this sleek contrast of different design palates brought together. Guest rooms feature great views, giant 65-inch flat-screen TVs, plush beds, and local food and drink artisans in the mini bar.

Pros

  • Outstanding pair of on-site restaurants
  • Above average fitness center
  • Rooms feel fresh without trying to be hip

Cons

  • Only a drip coffee (no espresso) maker in rooms
  • Long waits for elevators happen too often
  • Prices seem steep for a not-quite-luxury-level hotel

John Rutledge House Inn

$$$$ | 116 Broad St., Charleston, SC, 29401, USA

The Joshua Tree Inn

$ | 61259 Twentynine Palms Hwy., Joshua Tree, CA, 92252, USA

Like the Harmony Motel in Twentynine Palms, this rustic roadside refuge will forever be a part of rock music lore, though, admittedly, it's tied to a darker moment—singer/guitarist and member of The Byrds Gram Parsons died in Room 8, which, despite its sad history and reports of paranormal activity, is still the most requested room. The inn, also a favorite of John Wayne and Donovan, wears this backstory like a badge of honor, usually playing tunes from Parsons' Grievous Angel album in the lobby, maintaining a memorabilia room, and sometimes hosting tribute concerts. Also like the Harmony, the single-story property seems stuck in time despite periodic updates (including a solar-power conversion). It's far from fancy, with dark cream-and-brown rooms with wood-paneled ceilings and mismatched furniture, so it's better suited to those making a purposeful pilgrimage than to those who seek pampering.

Pros

  • Complimentary tea, coffee, and granola bars
  • All units have personal back patios
  • Guitars to borrow during stay

Cons

  • Rooms don't get much natural light
  • Far from fancy with furnishings in a mishmash of styles
  • Pool can get loud when kids are present

It's quite the refreshing design spectacle, from the exterior Beaux-Arts grand arched windows to the loosely art deco lobby. Guest rooms are on the upscale minimalist side with small works of abstract art on the walls and hardwood floors partially covered by rugs. All rooms have helpful blackout curtains and some of the nicer options have a private patio on a courtyard terrace.

Pros

  • Rooftop bar High 5ive
  • Yoga mats on request and a calm meditative space in-house
  • Gorgeous bathrooms with nice tilework

Cons

  • Can be too hip of a scene
  • Smallest rooms are a bit tight
  • Dicey neighborhood at times

L'Auberge Del Mar

$$$$ | 1540 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar, CA, 92014, USA

An $11-million remodel in 2021 revamped this oceanfront luxury hotel, taking it from beach cottage to coastal modern with subdued colors, contemporary pieces, and an elevated vibe reminding you that you're in Del Mar. From the lobby reminiscent of a chic living room to the guest rooms in warm hues of tan, ivory, and gray, the hotel spared no expense in comfort or design. Balconies face the ocean and pool where guests lounge in private cabanas. Active travelers can surf 15th Street (there's surfboard rental next door), hike neighboring Torrey Pines, or hop on one of the complimentary beach cruisers to explore historic Del Mar. For wellness by the sea, book a facial, wrap, or massage at the on-site spa, where treatments integrate seaweed extract and other nourishing marine-based minerals. The pool-view, ocean-driven restaurant, Adelaide, has the power to eat away your day as you sip cocktails and dip into fresh ceviche.

Pros

  • Tennis courts, a fitness center, and shuttle service to neighboring beaches, shops, and restaurants
  • Excellent service
  • Dogs welcomed with gift bags

Cons

  • Occasional train noise
  • Adult atmosphere
  • $60 resort fee and $200 pet fee per stay
