The Water Club

$ | 1 Renaissance Way, Atlantic City, NJ, 08401, USA

This modern, boutique-style hotel dotted with pools, fountains, and flowers will especially appeal to swimmers and spa aficionados, rather than gambling buffs. Adjacent to the Borgata, The Water Club is an innovative, non-gaming destination offering sweeping views of the marina and ocean. Immersion spa on the 32nd floor is a high-tech jewel, with an infinity-edge pool; deluge showers as forceful as deep-tissue massages; milk and honey cocoon floats and soaks in bourbon; and blossom and bark-filled tubs. Chef Geoffrey Zakarian (of Manhattan's Town and Country restaurants) reinvents Philly cheese steak, french fries (with truffles) and shrimp cocktail (with fresh wasabi), serving summery food and cocktails in the Sunroom lounge and poolside. Indoor pools and Jacuzzis next to the luxurious lobby are surrounded by pineapple plants, palm trees and bamboo that transport guests from the Jersey shore to the tropics.

Pros

  • A relaxing getaway
  • Access to the Borgata's casino

Cons

  • Music too loud in some areas
  • Views facing West are less attractive

A former U.S. Coast Guard station on a hill overlooking Lubec Channel, this lodging offers a unique mix of accommodations of varying size in 15 buildings, including a three-bedroom lighthouse and the Keepers Cottage (sleeps four). Some units are apartments that sleep four or six, and there are cabins that sleep four and a few large buildings that sleep eight or nine. Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino

$ | 3000 Paradise Rd., Las Vegas, NV, 89109, USA

Convention attendees have loved this hotel's proximity to the Las Vegas Convention Center for decades, but converting some of its hotel rooms to time-shares has also helped the hotel stay in the game as the Strip has exploded with bigger and bolder properties. It's an amazing testimony to resilience, and has been renovated extensively since the mid-2010s. Some lean years for the showroom made famous by Elvis robbed the overall property of that certain sizzle; but entertainment has been on the upswing as well, thanks it being the one guaranteed place to still see Barry Manilow, as well as one-night concert stops by casino favorites such as Air Supply and Cheap Trick. Magician Jen Kramer and tributes to Motown and Elvis have lately shared a unique little cabaret venue. The property's real standout attraction now is its Superbook, which pioneered the mission-control-style sports book and continues to set the line for betting action (the giant screens got upgraded during the pandemic). Because the hotel is east of the Strip, west-facing accommodations have great views. A variety of suite options include one- and two-bedroom accommodations with amenities ranging from spa tubs to dining tables and wet bars. Live cooking action at the world's largest and arguably most famous Benihana restaurant has been a consistent novelty amid changes inside and outside this piece of Las Vegas history. But a surprising number of restaurants are still on property, including a rare surviving buffet.

Pros

  • Great location for convention-goers
  • Classic sports book
  • World's largest Benihana

Cons

  • Small poker area
  • Away from much of the action
  • Reputation for top entertainment has faded

Runners can join the concierge for Tuesday and Thursday morning guided runs, and the fitness studio has Pelotons.

Wildhaven Sonoma

$ | 2411 Alexander Valley Rd., Healdsburg, CA, 95448, USA

Bay Area weekenders and tourists dabbling at the outdoor life but needing a floor, a queen bed with linens, and clean communal restrooms and showers head to this well-run “glamping” hideaway. All 40 tents have the same dimensions, and each site offers nearly the same amenities: a raised platform, covered porch, electricity, a heated mattress pad, Wi-Fi, a heater, and a fan inside, and a picnic table, firepit, and patio furniture outside. The view and proximity to the river determine the pricing. Regulars covet the row of Riverside tents (and the only four cabins, whose air-conditioning can be a godsend in summer), which have no forward views of cars or other tents. Farther from the river, the following two rows, Premium and Standard, look at the backs of other tents, though many are closer to the restrooms, showers, and communal grilling facilities. A market operates at the entrance, and the property hosts live music and wine events on some weekends.

Pros

  • Communal grilling facilities (also firepits at each site)
  • Riverside tents and property’s only four cabins for the most scenic setting
  • Access to a private Russian River Valley beach

Cons

  • Expensive on summer and early-fall weekends
  • No private baths
  • All units have heaters, but only four cabins have air-conditioning

This is a great place to get away any time of year, 25 miles southwest of Charlottesville (via I–64, U.S. 250, and Route 151). With 6,700 acres of forest, six restaurants, and three golf courses, Wintergreen is more like a community in itself than just a resort. Skiing and snowboarding are the central attractions, with 20 downhill slopes and five chairlifts. One of the golf courses, Devils Knob at over 3,800 feet, is the highest in Virginia. Accommodations at the resort include everything from studio apartments to seven-bedroom houses. Most rooms have fireplaces and full kitchens; the wood exteriors of the housing units blend into the surrounding forest.

Pros

  • Good skiing and summer outdoor activities
  • Cozy rooms complete with fireplaces
  • Many restaurants and other resort options

Cons

  • Crowded in season
  • Half-hour drive from Charlottesville
