Sierra Sky Ranch

$ | 50552 Rd. 632, Oakhurst, CA, 93644, USA

Off Highway 41 just 10 miles south of the Yosemite National Park, this 19th-century cattle ranch near a hidden grove of giant sequoia trees provides a restful, rustic retreat. Although the upscale furnishings and amenities are contemporary, the ranch's historic character has been preserved. Most rooms have French doors that open out onto airy porches that are ideal for unwinding on a summer evening, and guests stay connected to the modern world with cable TV and free Wi-Fi access. There's a steak house on-site, and the swimming pool is open in summer. Heating and air-conditioning in all rooms make the ranch a four-season getaway.

Pros

  • Peaceful setting
  • Historic property
  • Short drive to giant sequoias

Cons

  • Some rooms on the small side

Silver Cloud Hotel Broadway

$ | 1100 Broadway, Seattle, 98122, USA

If you want to stay on Capitol Hill and don't like B&Bs, this is your only option—and it does the job. Though it doesn't look like much from the outside, the spacious lobby is comfortable and nicely styled in modern tans, greens, and purples. Guest rooms are smallish and have no views to speak of, but they have nice furnishings like tall wooden headboards and faux granite–top desks. King Jacuzzi rooms have large tubs and faux fireplaces, but have odd layouts and aren't worth the extra cost (unless you really want that tub!). Suites are well laid out and have bay windows—even though the views aren't great, the extra light is a plus. All rooms have microwaves and refrigerators.

Pros

  • Better than expected from mid-range chain
  • Central location
  • Only non-B&B lodging on the Hill

Cons

  • Immediate location is uninspiring
  • Some rooms are a bit dark
  • Not a great value when high season prices spike

Silver River Adobe Inn

$ | 3151 W. Main St., Farmington, NM, 87499, USA

Take a deep breath and relax at this red-roof adobe. It's perched on a cottonwood-covered sandstone cliff 30 feet above the junction of the San Juan River and the La Plata. Rough-hewn timbers, fluffy quilts, and complete privacy make this rustic getaway ideal for romance or rumination, though the property and the proprietors are definitely kid-friendly. The proprietors, Diana Ohlson and David Beers, are smart, down-to-earth, and excellent sources of information about adventures and explorations in the area. Organic, home-style breakfasts such as light and puffy Dutch Babies, waffles, crepes, peach clafoutis, pumpkin bread, or Tuscan apple cake are a great start to the day. Those interested in sustainability will appreciate the inn's use of solar collectors and the temperature-balancing adobe construction.

Pros

  • Diana maintains a massage practice on-site
  • All rooms have private entrances, baths, and river views

Cons

  • No TV, phone, or Internet
  • Access road is a little quirky—request directions

Recommended Fodor's Video

Silver Saddle Motel

$ | 2810 Cerrillos Rd., Santa Fe, NM, 87505, USA

This low-slung adobe property significantly transcends the generally sketchy quality of the several other budget motels along Cerrillos Road, thanks to the tireless efforts of its owner. There's a kitschy, Western aspect to the place—rooms are named for icons of the West (Annie Oakley, Wyatt Earp) and contain related plaques with colorful biographies and local cowboy art. Furnishings are decidedly Southwest: Mexican-tile bathrooms, serape tapestries, built-in bancos, and equipale chairs (made of woven wood and leather) are present in most rooms. Enjoy breakfast on the covered ramada picnic area. The popular home-furnishings and gift emporium, Jackalope, is next door.

Pros

  • Superaffordable
  • Good-size rooms, some with refrigerators
  • Friendly, helpful staff

Cons

  • Rooms toward the front get noise from Cerrillos Road
  • Very few frills
  • A 15-minute drive from the Plaza

Silverton Casino Lodge

$ | 3333 Blue Diamond Rd., Las Vegas, NV, 89139, USA

The boutique Silverton has long embraced a rustic mountain theme but doubled down after recent major renovations, redoracting rooms with cowboy kitsch or modern rustic style, improving the pool, and proclaiming the property a \"Lodge.\" The $40 million project to freshen the hotel has created rooms that might reflect the home of a cattle baron like John Dutton, with suites designed for working or entertaining, and some adjacent to The Swimmin' Hole pool deck, complete with direct access from the balcony. Speaking of that pool: $10 million was spent to renovate it, adding deluxe cabanas and daybeds, a 32-foot retractable screen and three fire pits—and the pool itself is kept at 86 degrees year-round.

Pros

  • Bass Pro Shops is an outdoorsman's heaven
  • Mermaid shows are one-of-a-kind
  • Hotel rooms are newly refurbished

Cons

  • Casino is on the small side
  • Well away from Las Vegas Strip
  • Heavy traffic on adjacent Blue Diamond Road

Sister City

$ | 225 Bowery, New York, NY, 10002, USA
In a refurbished tenement building, this minimalist hotel from the owners of the exceedingly hip Ace Hotels brand describes itself as an “experiment in essentialism” with a focus on the budget traveler. The Scandinavian design aesthetic suits the concept perfectly, so although the rooms are small and without frills, there are enough tucked-away spots to stash your clothes and hang your jacket. As expected, the public spaces attract a fashionable young crowd.

Pros

  • Uber cool rooftop bar, Last Light, with killer views
  • Floret, the all-day café on the ground floor
  • Great location for downtown shopping and dining

Cons

  • Design can seem a bit too bare
  • Last Light can get too cool for school

Sonder The Crescent Beverly Hills

$ | 403 N. Crescent Dr., Los Angeles, CA, 90210, USA

Built in 1927 as a dorm for silent-film actors, the Crescent is now a fanciful boutique hotel with a great location—within the Beverly Hills shopping triangle—and with an even better price (for the area). Low couches and tables, an indoor/outdoor fireplace, and shimmering candlelight at night give the hotel's public areas a welcoming and sophisticated look. Hallways are lined with Terry O’Neil and Douglas Kirkland portraits of famous stars (all for sale, by the way), while guest rooms feature custom headboards painted with large whimsical pictures of animals like hummingbirds and butterflies, as well as hanging blown-glass lights, sound machines, and splashy color schemes.

South Coast Winery Resort & Spa

$ | 34843 Rancho California Rd., Temecula, CA, 92591, USA

At Temecula's largest winery, this resort offers your choice of a private villa or hotel room in the tower building, all surrounded by 38 acres of vineyards. Most guests opt for a villa, each designed for privacy with no common walls or entrances, with sweeping views of mountains and sky from a private patio. Back doors open onto trails that wind through vineyards and orchards, ideal for guests who travel with happy hounds; each dog is welcomed with a "sWag Bag" and owners are treated to wine-tasting tickets. There are hand-painted frescoes, in-room fireplaces, oversize marble bathrooms, and small dining areas. In the tower building, an additional 50 rooms are slightly less private but more affordable than the villas. The resort also has a spa with 22 treatment rooms and a saltwater pool. South Point Hotel Casino & Spa

$ | 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Las Vegas, NV, 89183, USA

Perk or quirk: the South Point is the only resort in the Las Vegas area with an equestrian center, a venue that hosts rodeos and other horse-oriented shows frequently almost year-round, as well as offering spacious rooms and a great spa. That makes it a big draw for horse-lovers, but it's not all the South Point has to offer. The spa offers 27 treatment rooms and a co-ed wet area, and the hotel has a 64-lane bowling alley, 16-screen movie theater, and one of the biggest bingo halls in town. Large hotel rooms and suites reach up to 2,500 square feet. The palm-lined pool area is inviting, too, provided you don't mind low-flying airplanes taking off from nearby Harry Reid International Airport. The sports book packs in big crowds on game days, with more than 300 seats. Visitors would be wise to capitalize on locals-oriented jackpots and promotions.

Pros

  • Inviting pool area
  • Busy equestrian center
  • Lively sports book

Cons

  • Proximity to airport
  • Distance from other Strip hotels
  • Rooms themselves are a little dull

The Southern Mansion

Stroll along the garden path and admire the flowers, especially abundant in May, or visit in December to see the parlors decked out with Christmas trees and garlands appropriate to the Victorian era.
