Sam's Town Hotel & Gambling Hall

$ | 5111 Boulder Hwy., Las Vegas, NV, 89122, USA

The pioneering \"locals casino\" has anchored Boulder Highway since 1979 as a pure example of the casino as a mall-meets-community-center: locals flock to the movie theater, huge sports book, and sprawling underground bowling center. If you do make a special trip, the distinguishing feature is the Mystic Falls Park, an indoor garden under a beautiful skylight, rimmed by hotel rooms, a bar and patio seating at the Angry Butcher Steakhouse, punctuated by the occasional howls of animatronic animals and periodic synchronized light shows.

Pros

  • Mystic Park area
  • "locals" prices throughout
  • Something for the whole family

Cons

  • Smoky, old-school casino floor
  • Unappealing neighborhood
  • Distanced from other Las Vegas attractions

This historic Mediterranean-revival inn has lovely Old Florida original touches like cypress ceilings and pine floors. Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles

$ | 6101 W. Century Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, 90045, USA

LAX's swankier hotel had some serious work done to its already sleek look, yet the appeal is in more than just the style; in-transit visitors love the 24-hour room service, pool (with private cabana rentals) and hot tub, fitness center, and airport shuttle, making this the perfect option for an early-morning flight. (That's provided you don't use a car; while room rates are reasonable, parking is $75.) The soundproofed rooms are compact, with slightly softer aesthetics than the refreshed lobby, and have helpful details such as coffee makers, hooks for hanging garment bags, and oversize work desks, which act in tandem to make the guest rooms feel more sophisticated than corporate. An on-site brasserie, California bistro, indoor-outdoor bar and Starbucks offer culinary variety. Pets are welcome.

Pros

  • Significantly lower weekend rates

Silver Cloud Hotel Broadway

$ | 1100 Broadway, Seattle, 98122, USA

If you want to stay on Capitol Hill and don't like B&Bs, this is your only option—and it does the job. Though it doesn't look like much from the outside, the spacious lobby is comfortable and nicely styled in modern tans, greens, and purples. Guest rooms are smallish and have no views to speak of, but they have nice furnishings like tall wooden headboards and faux granite–top desks. King Jacuzzi rooms have large tubs and faux fireplaces, but have odd layouts and aren't worth the extra cost (unless you really want that tub!). Suites are well laid out and have bay windows—even though the views aren't great, the extra light is a plus. All rooms have microwaves and refrigerators.

Pros

  • Better than expected from mid-range chain
  • Central location
  • Only non-B&B lodging on the Hill

Cons

  • Immediate location is uninspiring

Silver River Adobe Inn

$ | 3151 W. Main St., Farmington, NM, 87499, USA

Take a deep breath and relax at this red-roof adobe. It's perched on a cottonwood-covered sandstone cliff 30 feet above the junction of the San Juan River and the La Plata. Rough-hewn timbers, fluffy quilts, and complete privacy make this rustic getaway ideal for romance or rumination, though the property and the proprietors are definitely kid-friendly. The proprietors, Diana Ohlson and David Beers, are smart, down-to-earth, and excellent sources of information about adventures and explorations in the area. Organic, home-style breakfasts such as light and puffy Dutch Babies, waffles, crepes, peach clafoutis, pumpkin bread, or Tuscan apple cake are a great start to the day. Those interested in sustainability will appreciate the inn's use of solar collectors and the temperature-balancing adobe construction.

Silver Saddle Motel

$ | 2810 Cerrillos Rd., Santa Fe, NM, 87505, USA

This low-slung adobe property significantly transcends the generally sketchy quality of the several other budget motels along Cerrillos Road, thanks to the tireless efforts of its owner. There's a kitschy, Western aspect to the place—rooms are named for icons of the West (Annie Oakley, Wyatt Earp) and contain related plaques with colorful biographies and local cowboy art. Furnishings are decidedly Southwest: Mexican-tile bathrooms, serape tapestries, built-in bancos, and equipale chairs (made of woven wood and leather) are present in most rooms. Enjoy breakfast on the covered ramada picnic area. The popular home-furnishings and gift emporium, Jackalope, is next door.

Pros

  • Superaffordable

Silverton Casino Lodge

$ | 3333 Blue Diamond Rd., Las Vegas, NV, 89139, USA

The boutique Silverton has long embraced a rustic mountain theme but doubled down after recent major renovations, redoracting rooms with cowboy kitsch or modern rustic style, improving the pool, and proclaiming the property a \"Lodge.\" The $40 million project to freshen the hotel has created rooms that might reflect the home of a cattle baron like John Dutton, with suites designed for working or entertaining, and some adjacent to The Swimmin' Hole pool deck, complete with direct access from the balcony. Speaking of that pool: $10 million was spent to renovate it, adding deluxe cabanas and daybeds, a 32-foot retractable screen and three fire pits—and the pool itself is kept at 86 degrees year-round.

Pros

  • Bass Pro Shops is an outdoorsman's heaven

$ | 225 Bowery, New York, NY, 10002, USA

As expected, the public spaces attract a fashionable young crowd.
