Moxy Times Square

$ | 485 7th Ave., New York, NY, 10018, USA

Among Midtown's trendy lodging choices is this good-value hotel designed with modern boutique swagger and a vibrant dining and drinking scene. One of several Moxy hotels in NYC, it's perched between Times Square and Penn Station. To maximize limited space, guest rooms employ \"urban camping\" design features such as under-the-bed drawers, hooks instead of closets, and sinks outside the bathroom. Expect comfort no matter the room or bed sizes (even for the bunk beds in some rooms, a treat for kids). Enjoy a drink at Bar Moxy or dine at seafood-centric Legasea. Magic Hour is one of Manhattan's biggest rooftop spaces; half nightclub and half bar, it's decorated as a sort of adults-only amusement park.

Pros

  • Affordable rates
  • Central location near public transit
  • Vibrant on-site restaurants and bars

Cons

  • Small rooms with minimal storage
  • Loud street noise

Murphys Suites

$ | 134 Hwy. 4, Murphys, CA, 95247, USA

The lobby's full-size, taxidermied bear poised to pounce and wolf on the prowl hint at a decorative sensibility that dissipates upon entering the boilerplate rooms at this motel-like property a few blocks southeast of downtown. Natural Bridge Hotel

$ | 15 Appledore La., Natural Bridge, VA, 24578, USA

The first hotel on this site was built in 1828, but visitors have been attracted to the Natural Bridge since Colonial times. The Neighborhood Hotel Lincoln Park

$ | 2626 N. Clark St., Chicago, IL, 60614, USA

You couldn't pick a better name for this 14-suite charmer: a lovingly rehabbed 19th-century apartment building set in Lincoln Park's residential heart, it's about as close as you can get to living like a local without signing a lease. While it's not a luxe downtown high-rise (a fact you might feel keenly aware of when you're hoofing it up the stairs), creature comforts like modern kitchenettes, soundbars, and even yoga mats abound. Better still, suites are bursting with vintage moldings, warm light, and artwork that celebrates 1980s Chicago pop culture, making for memorable, if not hyper-polished, spaces. A rear coach house offers extra privacy.

Pros

  • Helpful management team reachable via text
  • All accommodations are suites
  • Steps from many good food options

Cons

  • No elevator

New York–New York Las Vegas Hotel & Casino

$ | 3790 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Las Vegas, NV, 89109, USA

The mini-Manhattan skyline is one of our favorite parts of the Strip—there are third-size to half-size facades of the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and the Chrysler Building, as well as the New York Public Library, Grand Central Terminal, and the Brooklyn Bridge. Rooms in this sprawling compound are quite a bit larger than typical rooms in the real Gotham, but they're not particularly fancy. Several grades of room are available, and as you pay more, you get plush amenities such as separate sitting areas with sofas, marble bathroom counters, and separate glass showers. Provided it's not a busy time of year, you can request in which tower you'd like your room to be. Also, be warned: the trek from the front desk to some of the towers can feel longer than the New York City Marathon, and the Big Apple Coaster that loops around the hotel can be intrusively loud if your room is near the tracks. Since New York–New York now frames the south side of the T-Mobile arena, the outdoor plaza connecting the arena to the Strip is a great place to people-watch and enjoy a cold adult beverage while breathing fresh air.

Pros

  • Authentic New York experience
  • Art deco lobby
  • Casino floor center bar

Cons

  • Layout is somewhat confusing
  • Cramped sports book
  • Mediocre pool

Normandy Inn

$ | 21 Tuttle Ave., Spring Lake, NJ, 07762, USA

This multicolor painted lady, circa 1889, has red rooftops and a central, square tower. Floral wallpapers and area rugs complement the Victorian pieces. North Bend Plantation Bed & Breakfast

$ | 12200 Weyanoke Rd., Charles City, VA, 23030, USA

As a working farm, this spot stands out from similar B&Bs in the area; inside, antebellum-era antiques original to the house, as well as Civil War maps and artifacts, decorate every room. The 1819 Greek Revival home was built for Sarah Harrison, sister of President William Henry Harrison, by her husband John Minge. Rooms are generously sized, particularly for a home of this era. There's a nice pool on peaceful grounds, which will appeal to families.
