The Leavitt Street Inn

$ | 2345 N. Leavitt St., Chicago, IL, 60647, USA

The friendly proprietors (and longtime Bucktown denizens) launched this guesthouse, at the end of a residential street, in 2021 after lovingly restoring its three guest rooms with a mix of crisp modern style and cozy touches like butter-soft linens and Aesop bath products. Cool graphic posters from the annual Bucktown Arts Fest (which the owners help run) add local color to the hallways. There’s a small shared kitchenette, but if you prefer to let someone else do the cooking, the property’s ground-floor tavern serves a smash burger that’s wildly popular with the neighbors.

Pros

  • Welcoming and knowledgeable hosts
  • Authentic neighborhood vibe
  • Casual on-site tavern serves top-notch pub grub

Cons

  • Downstairs tavern and nearby highway may trouble light sleepers
  • Common areas are limited
  • No convenient 'L' stop

Recommended Fodor's Video

Life House, Little Havana

$ | 528 S.W. 9th Ave., FL, 33130, USA

This tropical, retro boutique hotel in the heart of Little Havana is both budget-friendly and chic, putting you close to the sights and sounds of Miami's Cuban culture for a fraction of what you'd pay on Miami Beach. Thoughtful community-driven design, including coworking spaces and a hammock-festooned lounge out back provide a social atmosphere. The light-filled rooms have dark woods and retro touches, and there are cool (and somehow inviting) adult bunk-bed configurations for groups. The Terras rooftop restaurant and bar has a buzzy energy.

  • Budget-friendly
  • On-site restaurant and bar

Cons

  • Far from the beach

Lighthouse Resort Inn & Suites

$ | 1051 5th Ave., Fort Myers Beach, FL, 33931, USA

An ideal base for exploring, this complex of pastel-painted buildings at the foot of the Fort Myers bridge has rooms that are basic but spacious, so consider splurging a little for a one- or two-bedroom suite. There are two pools (one with a waterfall) and a popular tiki bar that's open until 2 am, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Luxor Las Vegas Hotel & Casino

$ | 3900 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Las Vegas, NV, 89119, USA

Unlike other hotels on the Strip, this one has no \"elevators,\" at least in the main pyramid; instead, in order to reach rooms, guests must climb the slanted walls in one of four \"inclinators,\" which creep along and have seen better days. On each floor, open-air hallways overlook the world's largest atrium. Pyramid rooms are large but otherwise nondescript and occasionally in a poor state of repair. One wall slopes because of the building's design—an interesting effect, but it makes these rooms feel cramped. We prefer the twin 22-story towers next door: they're newer and have brighter rooms with large windows, many that offer killer views of the pyramid. Bathrooms are spacious and have separate showers and tubs. Suites in the pyramid have plenty of extra space and deep whirlpool tubs with brilliant views of the skyline. The Luxor has one of the largest pools on the South Strip. For a truly indulgent treat, rent a cabana and receive poolside VIP services such as hand-delivered treats and iced aromatherapy towels.

Pros

The Lyle Hotel

$ | 100 7th St., Lyle, 98635, USA

Built in the early 20th century a block from still very active train tracks (rooms are equipped with ear plugs), this friendly and slightly quirky 10-room boutique hotel is a well-situated and affordable base for exploring the many exceptional wineries between Lyle and Maryhill. Some of the cozy rooms with antiques, robes, and comfy floral linens and quilts have views of the Gorge, and all share a bath. Try to stay here Thursday through Saturday, when the great on-site restaurant, with lovely outdoor garden seating, is open—it serves hearty portions of eclectic comfort fare and features an impressive list of local craft beers and wines.

  • Terrific bar and restaurant on-site

M Resort Spa Casino

$ | 12300 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Henderson, NV, 89044, USA

Built by the Marnells, the same family that created the Rio, this resort is 6 miles south of Harry Reid Airport and is a destination unto itself. Sitting at an elevation 400 feet higher than the majority of Strip hotels, the M literally looks down on the rest of Las Vegas. Standard rooms are spacious and modern, with chocolate-brown carpet and dark-wood furniture. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer picture-perfect views of the desert. All rooms come with electronic sensors that dim the lights when guests are absent, to conserve energy. Downstairs, at Spa Mio, the focus is on personal luxury—therapists offer everything from facials to massages and haircuts. Relaxation continues by the pool, which is small but feels ultra-exclusive. The casino, which has windows to let in natural light, hums with excitement—a spacious race and sports book with mobile gaming technology is among the most popular attractions. Out back, the resort hosts live concerts under the desert night sky. Since the NFL came to Vegas in 2020, the property has also become the \"Official Team HQ Hotel\" for the Las Vegas Raiders, complete with its own Raiders-themed restaurant.

Pros

  • Huge rooms
  • Convenient yet removed from hubbub
  • Views of Strip

The Mad Carpenter Inn

$ | 353 N. 8th St., Laramie, WY, 82072, USA

When you stay here, you'll likely meet the "Mad Carpenter" himself, Lawrence Thomas, who lovingly restored this historic home with the help of his wife, Danny Rue, whose fabulous homemade granola is available every morning with breakfast. For a bit more money, you can rent "The Dollhouse," a separate cottage behind the main home that has its own deck, kitchenette, and jetted tub. Two other guesthouses suitable for larger groups are nearby but don't include breakfast.

Pros

Mad River Barn

$ | 2849 Mill Brook Rd., Waitsfield, VT, 05673, USA

This former bunkhouse for the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s is now one of the Mad River Valley's chicest accommodations, thanks to extensive renovations in 2013 that transformed it into a rustic farmhouse with an edge of industrial. These transformations translate to clever touches, like bed spring light fixtures, a sign made of plumbing handles, and lots of reclaimed wood. The on-site pub, restaurant—serving eclectic international dishes—and game room keeps the fun going through the evening.

Pros

  • Multiple-sized rooms, sleeping up to six people
  • Game room includes shuffleboard, air hockey, foosball, and more
  • Several family suites, with bunkbeds

Mainstay Inn

$ | 635 Columbia Ave., Cape May, NJ, 08204, USA

Fourteen-foot ceilings, tall windows, a thirteen-foot hallway mirror, and black walnut dining-room furniture show a pedigree of money and manners. The two wealthy gamblers who constructed the building in 1872, as a gambling clubhouse for their friends (men only), obviously meant to impress. In 1971, the Mainstay became Cape May's first B&B, and since then has been the archetype for those that followed. You can also stay at the adjoining Cottage, or across the street in a duplex apartment. Guest rooms and suites have Victorian antiques, while the apartment has some traditional flourishes, but is mostly contemporary with a full kitchen, gas fireplace, and a small dining area.
