JW Marriott Indianapolis

$ | 10 S. West St.,, Indianapolis, IN, 46204, USA

This glittering downtown hotel, dubbed "big blue" for its aqua-hued glass façade, attracts a mix of guests for its central location and full slate of in-house amenities. Kalaheo Inn

$ | 4444 Papalina Rd., HI, 96741, USA

It isn't easy to find good budget lodgings on the southwest side of the island, but this old-fashioned neighborhood inn with studios and one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites does an adequate job in cooler up-country Kalaheo Town. Suites have kitchenettes, and some have full kitchens. There's a great little hilltop park and nine-hole golf course just up the road, and it's an easy drive to West Side sights. The inn loans beach chairs and towels.

Pros

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Walking distance to café and takeout
  • Coin-operated laundry on-site

Cons

  • Three-night minimum stay

Key West Bed and Breakfast/The Popular House

$ | 415 William St., FL, 33040, USA

There are accommodations for every budget here, but the owners reason that budget travelers deserve as pleasant an experience (and as lavish a tropical continental breakfast) as their well-heeled counterparts. Local art—large, splashy canvases and a Gauguinesque mural—decorates the walls, while handmade textiles (owner Jody Carlson is a talented weaver) drape chairs, couches, and beds at this historic home. Less expensive rooms burst with bright colors (hand-painted dressers add a whimsical flourish) and balconies on the second-floor rooms overlook the gardens. Spacious, and more expensive, third-floor rooms are decorated with a paler palette and original furniture.

Pros

  • Lots of art
  • Tiled outdoor shower
  • Hot tub and sauna area is a welcome hangout

Cons

  • Some rooms are small
  • Four rooms have shared baths
  • Historic homes have thinner walls

The Kilby House Inn B&B

$ | 122 Water St., Eastport, ME, 04631, USA

In this 1887 Queen Anne residence built by seaman Herbert Kilby, creamy white walls offset fine antique furnishings, for a brightening effect that evokes an old-fashioned summer home, especially as sea breezes blow through the large windows on a summer day; a separate carriage house can be booked for an extended stay. The first floor has a living room with a fireplace, music room, dining room, and large foyer, while the four guest rooms are upstairs—three guest rooms have a queen bed, and the other has cannonball twins. While guests enjoy a full breakfast served at 8 am, their host joins them, coffee in hand, to chat and help them plot their day with tips, maps, and pamphlets at the ready. With gleaming light wood walls, ceiling, and floor, the carriage house has all the amenities needed for a comfortable longer stay including a kitchen, small deck, air-conditioning, gas fireplace, and washer and dryer.

Pros

  • Kindly innkeeper goes all out to help guests plan outings, often to hidden gems beyond Eastport
  • Rates adjusted for single occupancy
  • Primary bedroom has a majestic canopied four-poster bed

Cons

  • Not on the water
  • Some small bathrooms

Kodiak Refuge Public-Use Cabins

$ | 1390 Buskin River Rd., Kodiak, AK, 99615, USA

One of Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge's lesser-known wonders is its collection of nine fantastic cabins scattered throughout the refuge. If you've ever wanted to be off alone in the Bush but still have a roof over your head, this is the way to go. The cabins are accessible by floatplane or boat, and available for up to seven days in summer and for longer the rest of the year. Set along the coast and on inland lakes, the cabins are bare-bones but do include bunks (which do not come with mattresses), kerosene heaters (you bring in your own kerosene), tables, and benches. Most cabins hold six or eight people. Although they usually book up six months in advance, if you get a sudden impulse, it's always worth checking to see if one is available. The cabins on inland lakes are usually not accessible in winter, and it's important to remember that any time you fly into remote Alaska you should come prepared for delays getting back out. Pack extra food and supplies, just in case.

Pros

  • True Alaska wilderness
  • Plenty of solitude
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Zero amenities
  • Roughing it is not for everyone
  • The chance of getting weathered in for a couple of days requires a loose schedule

La Casita del Sol

$ | 1607 S. Harrison St., Amarillo, TX, 79102, USA

Near downtown, in the Plemons–Eckle historic district, the "little house of the sun" is a 1927 Spanish-eclectic-style home, restored and renovated as a bed-and-breakfast. It feels somewhat like an art gallery, with interior style created by local artists (most of the display art is for sale). Each of the four intimate rooms has a private bath and either overlooks or opens onto a generously sized walled garden, in the Spanish tradition. Shared areas are great for getting to know your fellow guests, many of whom are repeat visitors. Chef Bonnie's breakfasts play a starring role in the experience here—even the jams are made in-house—so budget your calories accordingly.

Pros

  • Residential location
  • All rooms on the ground floor
  • Romance package available

Cons

  • Some freeway noise may be audible in the garden
  • American Express cards not accepted

The on-site Oyster & Thistle restaurant and pub is one of the top dining spots in town.

La Fiesta Ocean Inn & Suites

$ | 810 A1A Beach Blvd., St. Augustine Beach, FL, 32080, USA

Chains have since taken over St. Augustine Beach, but this longtime favorite—the only remaining "Mom and Pop" on the beach—is still doing business (lots of it) and remains as beloved as ever. The location, just steps from the beach, helps, of course. But so do the inviting, consistently updated rooms, in-room continental breakfast delivery (you choose the time), private walkway to the beach, warm service, and reasonable rates. There are a wide variety of room types and locations (some with balconies and/or fireplaces), so it's best to call and make sure you get the room you want. For a special treat, book a room in the property's adults-only bed-and-breakfast, a short walk from the main building.

Pros

  • On the beach
  • Breakfast delivered to rooms
  • Refrigerators and microwaves in rooms

Cons

La Posada Lodge and Casitas

$ | 5900 N. Oracle Rd., Tucson, AZ, 85704, USA

This 1960s motor lodge has been reborn as a Santa Fe–style boutique hotel with a Latin theme. Though most rooms in the three-story building have Saltillo-tile floors and hand-painted Mexican headboards, a few are whimsically decorated with blue-and-lime-green–checkered bedspreads and curtains, along with kitschy furniture and lava lamps, as a tribute to the hotel's past life. Upper-floor rooms have balconies with mountain and city views. A full breakfast at the on-site restaurant, Gringo, is included.

Pros

  • Good location
  • Southwestern restaurant on-site (where your breakfast is served)
