Hotel Royal

$ | 431 E. Broadway, Long Beach, CA, 90802, USA

A great value for Long Beach, the family-owned, European-style Hotel Royal makes up for in kindness what it lacks in fancy extras. Think free breakfast, a lively wine happy hour, and free bike rentals. The hotel was built in 1923 in the art deco style and is in the center of Long Beach's au courant East Village arts district. In keeping with the building's age, the small lobby and some of the rooms have exposed brick walls. If you really want to live your 1920s dream, you can even reserve a room with a built-in Murphy bed, which folds out of sight when you're not using it. The decor is somewhat uninspired, but for the price, the Royal has all you need. The studios, lofts, and suites are individually decorated. Some rooms have en suite private baths, while less-expensive options share a bathroom with other rooms on the floor. Some rooms are equipped with kitchenettes, but there's a fully stocked community kitchen, making this a perfect stop for families, larger groups who want to spend time together, or those who prefer to cook. While not oceanfront, the hotel is a 15-minute walk from the beach.

Pros

  • Lively happy hour
  • Free breakfast and bike rentals
  • Stocked community kitchen good for families

Cons

  • No elevator
  • $25 parking (but inexpensive for Long Beach)
  • Some rooms share bathrooms

The on-site restaurant, aptly named Greenbrier Swim and Social, features an all-day menu of salads and sandwiches, as well as a full cocktail bar. While it's not located directly on the beach, complimentary beach umbrellas, chairs, and towel set-ups are provided.

Hotel Warm Springs Bed and Breakfast Inn

$ | 47 Broad St., Warm Springs, GA, 31830, USA

In downtown Warm Springs, this historic hotel has plenty of character—the guest rooms have oak furniture and 12-foot ceilings with crown molding. Prices are even cheaper if you opt not to have breakfast, though this means you'll miss out on a full-service Southern breakfast with cheese grits. The Tuscawilla Soda Company off the lobby is a treat to visit—it was the town's original drugstore and soda fountain, often frequented by FDR himself. Unlike many B&Bs, children are welcome here and some rooms are even pet friendly.

Pros

  • Convenient to Warm Springs' sights
  • Storied history
  • Amazing Southern breakfast

Cons

  • No elevator
  • Some say rooms and public spaces could use some refreshing
  • Child-friendly atmosphere not for everyone

Hotel Wolf

$ | 101 E. Bridge Ave., Saratoga, WY, 82331, USA

This downtown 1893 hotel on the National Register of Historic Places is well-maintained by its proud owners, who have decorated each room differently, always maintaining the hotel's original simple Victorian charm. Note that all guest rooms are on the second and third floors, and there is no elevator. Also, some of the rooms are small, though the prices shrink with the sizes of the rooms. The fine restaurant ($$), bar, and lounge also have Victorian furnishings, including dark-green wallpaper, antique oak tables, crystal chandeliers, and lacy drapes. Prime rib and steaks are the specialties, and seafood and lamb are also on the menu. Dinner reservations are strongly recommended.

  • Family-run and friendly
  • Delicious on-site restaurant serving Western favorites

Cons

  • Steep stairs and no elevator

Hyatt Place New York Chelsea

Tall and pale, the tower that houses the new Hyatt Place is not particularly easy on the eyes, but when you're marveling at the stunning skyscraper-laden view from an upper-floor room, you won't give a damn what the facade looks like. Tucked away on a residential side street near Waikiki's Ala Wai Canal, this locally owned, 17-story, condo-style hotel is a throwback to old Waikiki, offering partially refreshed, large units that are ideal for families. The glass-walled lobby—with its koa-wood furnishings, original local artwork, and friendly staff—feels like a Hawaiian home-away-from-home. Rates are decent for the spacious, updated (2022) studios and one- and two-bedroom suites, all with full kitchens, Wi-Fi, and spacious lanai. Inn at Ellis River

$ | 17 Harriman Rd., Jackson, NH, 03846, USA

Most of the rooms—which are all outfitted with armchairs and ottomans and floral-print duvet covers and featherbeds—in this unabashedly romantic 1893 inn on the Ellis River have fireplaces, and some also have balconies with Adirondack chairs and whirlpool tubs. A pub room has a pool table, dart boards, and other games, and you can watch the river from the enclosed indoor hot tub or relax outside in a dry sauna and heated swimming pool.

  • Pretty riverside location
  • Abundantly charming
  • Multicourse breakfasts and afternoon refreshments included

Cons

  • Some rooms up steep stairs
