Brannan Lofts

$$ | 1440 Lincoln Ave., Calistoga, CA, 94515, USA

On the second floor of a refurbished 1920s building, these light-filled lofts that debuted in 2024 position guests in the middle of downtown Calistoga’s retail, dining, and wine-tasting action. As with the affiliated Brannan Cottage Inn two blocks away (the properties are run jointly as the Brannan Hotels), upscale comfort is the goal, achieved here via custom contemporary furnishings, up-to-the-moment electronics, flat-screen smart TVs, espresso machines, and bathrooms with rain showers and heated floors and toilets. Four lofts have kitchenettes with induction cooktops. With contactless check-in, keyless rooms, and no front desk, the experience resembles an Airbnb more than a boutique hotel, though the GM and other staffers are nearby at the inn, whose café provides a complimentary breakfast for patrons booking directly through the website or by phone.

Pros

  • Four lofts have kitchenettes with induction cooktops
  • Spacious, upscale accommodations
  • Contactless check-in, keyless rooms (think Airbnb
  • There’s no front desk)

Cons

  • No elevator (and stairs are somewhat steep)
  • Must walk two blocks for breakfast, not included for bookings through third-party sites
  • Early- to mid-evening noise (sometimes live music) from nearby restaurants and bars

Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino

$$ | 20 Buffalo Thunder Trail, Santa Fe, NM, 87506, USA

Managed by Hilton, this expansive, upscale gaming and golfing resort is 15 miles north of downtown Santa Fe, just off a freeway but with spectacular views of the mountains and Rio Grande Valley—it's a great option to be close to the start of the High Road or if you'd prefer to stay close to but still a bit outside of the City Different. Rooms are spacious and airy, all with large windows and some with full balconies taking in the dramatic vistas. The property offers plenty of leisure amenities, including an extensive slate of treatments in the 16,000-square-foot Wo'P'in Spa, access to a pair of championship layouts (27 holes) at the adjacent Towa Golf Resort, a concert venue, and a good mix of upscale and casual restaurants and bars. There's also an enormous casino, but it's set well away from the lobby and public areas on a separate level, making it easy to ignore if gaming isn't your thing. Hilton also operates a less pricey but quite nice Homewood Suites next door.

Pros

  • Snazzy rooms with plenty of amenities
  • Convenient to downtown Santa Fe and Low and High roads to Taos
  • Panoramic mountain and mesa views

Cons

  • Rates can be a bit steep, especially when there are events on property
  • Lobby is noisy and crowded with gamers on many evenings

The Bungalows

$$$$ | 59700 Twentynine Palms Hwy., Joshua Tree, CA, 92252, USA

Amid serene desert on a far corner of the 152-acre Joshua Tree Retreat Center, this adults-only property has three painstakingly restored mid-century-modern buildings containing suites that offer the architectural panache of Palm Springs (patterned masonry, breeze blocks, angular lines, slanted roofs, giant windows) and mod-cons like keyless entry, Parachute linens, and water filtered by reverse osmosis. Each unit has its own kitchen, patio, books, games, and binoculars, but outdoor communal spaces with bistro light–lit long tables, propane grills, and fire pits give groups places to gather. We recommend starting your day by making French-press coffee to take with you on a walk through the vast grounds, which contain ponds, pools, art installations, a café, a bookstore, energy vortices, and the world's largest assemblage of Frank Lloyd Wright's son's organic architecture. For an extra fee, you can also join official retreat workshops.

Pros

  • Access to hiking trails where you will likely not see anyone else
  • Mellow, high-desert vibe
  • Great place to watch sunrises and sunsets

Cons

  • No TVs
  • No on-site personnel
  • Swimming pools haven't been updated and are hard to find

c/o The Maidstone Arms Inn

$$$$ | 207 Main St., East Hampton, NY, 11937, USA

A hip and sophisticated take on a classic Greek Revival inn, this town-center lodging has been in operation since the 1870s, but its current owners, a Swedish hospitality group, have endowed it with cool Scandinavian flair. Each of its spacious and luxurious rooms and cottages is uniquely designed and inspired by artists, designers, writers, and scientists, ranging from modern edge to cozy traditional. Rooms in the three cottages can be rented singly or combined to accommodate larger groups, making it a family-friendly option. In the restaurant the chef prepares sumptuous daily specials using fresh local seafood and produce as well as Swedish imports like Västerbotten cheese. The cabins in this 750-acre resort campground just a boat ride away from the Magic Kingdom don't exactly constitute roughing it, as they are compact, air-conditioned log homes that accommodate four grown-ups and two youngsters.

Campbell House

$$ | 74744 Joe Davis Dr., Twentynine Palms, CA, 92277, USA

When this stone mansion was built back in 1925 (by a WW I vet who married into a wealthy family before being sent to the desert as a remedy for mustard-gas exposure), no expense was spared, as evidenced by the 50-foot-long great room's planked-maple floor, the intricate carpentry, and the huge stone fireplaces that warm the house on cold nights. Accommodations include two-bedroom suites in the main house, rooms in the converted barn, and cottages—one of them by the pool and hot tub—sprinkled across 25 secluded acres amid Washingtonia palms. Amenities vary by room but can include private patios, firepits, fireplaces, and kitchenettes.

A multimillion-dollar renovation completed in the early 2020s transformed this 1970s motel, conveniently located near the intersection of Highway 1 and Rio Road, into a hip haven that evokes the region’s natural environment (sand, sea, mountains, pines) and artsy past (mosaic floors, local art, vintage doors). Carneros Resort and Spa

$$$$ | 4048 Sonoma Hwy./Hwy. 121, Napa, CA, 94559, USA

A winning combination of glamour, service, and pastoral seclusion makes this resort with freestanding board-and-batten cottages the perfect getaway for active lovebirds or families and groups seeking to unwind. The several bars, a tasting room (wine and spirits flights, plus beer and nonalcoholic beverages), and restaurants on property and the Town Square's lawn games area and Pavilion open-air lounge provide numerous opportunities for socializing, but when it's time to power down, the cottages and suites deliver the utmost in privacy. Natural light floods the cottages, whose French doors lead to private gardens, some with firepits and outdoor soaking tubs. Fireplaces, ethereal beds topped with plush linens, and spacious bathrooms with heated slate floors and large indoor-outdoor showers may make it difficult to summon the will to head to the hilltop infinity swimming pool and hot tub, where the vineyard views never fail to astound. The Hilltop dining room is open to guests only, but Farm and the Boon Fly Café, both public restaurants, are popular with visitors throughout the Wine Country.

Pros

  • Cottages have lots of privacy
  • Views from hilltop pool and hot tub
  • Heaters on private patios

Cons

  • Long drive to upvalley destinations
  • Least expensive accommodations pick up highway noise
  • Pricey pretty much year-round
