The Blake

$$$$ | 116 Sutton Pl., Taos, NM, 87525, USA

This luxury boutique hotel just steps from the resort's lifts has quickly developed a reputation as the swankiest accommodation in the Taos region. Of course, if you're not here to ski, hike, or pursue other valley activities, the hotel is a bit remote—a 30-minute drive from Taos Plaza—to serve as a base for exploring the area. But the setting is gorgeous, and the amenities, which include a first-rate spa and increased dining options, are excellent. The $60-million LEED-certified hotel with a classic but contemporary French-Swiss Alpine look and vibe contains 80 rooms and suites with earthy tones, plush linens, humidifiers, and—in the suites—gas fireplaces. The largest suites have well-stocked kitchenettes and sweeping mountain views. A fireplace warms the inviting lobby, and 192 at the Blake restaurant is a sleek, stylish spot for drinks or a bite to eat. There's also a year-round heated pool and hot tub.

Pros

  • Steps from the main lift
  • Sizable rooms and plenty of amenities
  • Beautiful views of the mountain

Cons

  • A 30-minute drive from Taos
  • Feeling of remoteness if you're not outdoorsy
  • Lobby is only modestly sized

Bridgehampton Inn & Restaurant

$$$$ | 2266 Main St., Bridgehampton, NY, 11932, USA

There's an upscale yet homey country feel to this stately 1795 clapboard inn within walking distance of the village center, and it's operated by the same family that owns the Loaves & Fishes food shop in Sagaponack. Beautiful antique dressers and mirrors decorate the rooms, and many of them have four-poster beds. An expansion project will provide greater capacity, in the same cozy style, for 2015. The sumptuous English breakfast, served in the dining room or on the veranda, is one of the biggest treats here.

Brome-Howard Inn

$$$$ | 18281 Rosecroft Rd., St. Mary's City, MD, 20686, USA

Set on 30 acres of farmland, this farmhouse provides a trip through time to life on a tobacco plantation in the 19th century. Rooms are decorated with original family furnishings. The Bungalows

$$$$ | 59700 Twentynine Palms Hwy., Joshua Tree, CA, 92252, USA

Amid serene desert on a far corner of the 152-acre Joshua Tree Retreat Center, this adults-only property has three painstakingly restored mid-century-modern buildings containing suites that offer the architectural panache of Palm Springs (patterned masonry, breeze blocks, angular lines, slanted roofs, giant windows) and mod-cons like keyless entry, Parachute linens, and water filtered by reverse osmosis. Each unit has its own kitchen, patio, books, games, and binoculars, but outdoor communal spaces with bistro light–lit long tables, propane grills, and fire pits give groups places to gather. We recommend starting your day by making French-press coffee to take with you on a walk through the vast grounds, which contain ponds, pools, art installations, a café, a bookstore, energy vortices, and the world's largest assemblage of Frank Lloyd Wright's son's organic architecture. For an extra fee, you can also join official retreat workshops.

Pros

  • Access to hiking trails where you will likely not see anyone else
  • Mellow, high-desert vibe
  • Great place to watch sunrises and sunsets

Cons

  • No TVs
  • No on-site personnel

Cal-a-Vie Health Spa

$$$$ | 29402 Spa Havens Way, Vista, CA, 92084, USA

At this destination spa—celebrities like Julia Roberts and Oprah Winfrey escape here for some serious R&R—you’ll feel like you’ve died and gone to a pampering Provençal village heaven. Classic French style prevails in the opulent lounge areas and private villas, which have marble baths, Frette linens, antique furnishings, and 200-year-old reclaimed wood floors. Villa balconies open onto hillsides blanketed in lavender, where a stone chapel—brought over from Dijon and dating back to 1615—is used for meditation and weddings. Every prix-fixe three-course dinner is a fine-dining experience in an ornate setting (crystal chandeliers, velvet chairs, and a 14th-century fireplace from France). Included in the daily rate are healthy meals, spa treatments, transportation around San Diego, and fitness classes, although many guests upgrade to personal trainers and oxygen facials that plump out wrinkles. After a morning hike, classes are offered every hour, including Pilates, yoga, spin, crystal sound baths, and aqua aerobics in the Olympic-size pool. Guests also have access to clay tennis courts, beach volleyball, pickleball courts, a bathhouse, and a state-of-the-art fitness center. Cal-a-Vie is the only destination spa in the world with a private, 18-hole golf course. Carneros Resort and Spa

$$$$ | 4048 Sonoma Hwy./Hwy. 121, Napa, CA, 94559, USA

A winning combination of glamour, service, and pastoral seclusion makes this resort with freestanding board-and-batten cottages the perfect getaway for active lovebirds or families and groups seeking to unwind. The several bars, a tasting room (wine and spirits flights, plus beer and nonalcoholic beverages), and restaurants on property and the Town Square's lawn games area and Pavilion open-air lounge provide numerous opportunities for socializing, but when it's time to power down, the cottages and suites deliver the utmost in privacy. Natural light floods the cottages, whose French doors lead to private gardens, some with firepits and outdoor soaking tubs. Fireplaces, ethereal beds topped with plush linens, and spacious bathrooms with heated slate floors and large indoor-outdoor showers may make it difficult to summon the will to head to the hilltop infinity swimming pool and hot tub, where the vineyard views never fail to astound. The Hilltop dining room is open to guests only, but Farm and the Boon Fly Café, both public restaurants, are popular with visitors throughout the Wine Country.

  • Heaters on private patios

The Chateaux Deer Valley

$$$$ | 7815 Royal St. E, UT, 84060, USA

Just steps away from the Deer Valley lifts at Silver Lake Village, this modern interpretation of a luxury European château incorporates designer furnishings, heated towel racks, full kitchens in suites, gas fireplaces, and numerous windows with spectacular mountain views. Renovations in 2022 added an expanded courtyard with fountains, cozy seating areas with fire pits, outdoor games, and plenty of space for kids to roam, plus an updated outdoor pool area with more lounge chairs, a second hot tub, and a spacious fitness center. The service is exemplary, and the on-site restaurant, Cena, offers traditional Italian dining in a warm and relaxing space. Complimentary s'mores kits and a daily breakfast buffet are offered year-round.

Pros

  • Great Italian dining at Cena
  • Rooms can accommodate any family size

Chatham Bars Inn

$$$$ | 297 Shore Rd., Chatham, MA, 02633, USA

One of the grande dames of Cape Cod's resort scene, this sprawling 25-acre oceanfront estate was built in 1914 as a private hunting lodge; now, more than 200 rooms are spread over 30-plus separate buildings and share a quarter-mile private beach. Guest accommodations include rooms in the main inn, cottages, and spa suites, with a fresh beachy vibe. From boat excursions to clambakes to farm-to-table dinners at their six-acre farm, the CBI crew can make it happen. They even make their own gin. It all comes at a price, of course, but this one is a true classic.

Pros

  • Activities galore
  • Children welcome
  • Oceanfront location

Cons

  • Not for the budget-conscious
  • Some lodgings are far from the action
  • "Americana"-themed decor doesn't appeal to all tastes
