Aston Mahana at Kaanapali

$$$$ | 110 Kaanapali Shores Pl., Honokowai, HI, 96761, USA

Though the name claims Kaanapali, this older, 12-story oceanfront condominium complex, where all units have unobstructed panoramic views of the ocean and nearby islands, is actually in quiet, neighboring Honokowai. There's a range of studio, one-, and two-bedroom units—all with spacious bedrooms, kitchens, living areas, and floor-to-ceiling windows—and an elegant pool that faces a sandy beach that's good for snorkeling because of the shallow reef.

Pros

  • Private lanai and massive windows great for sunsets and whale-watching
  • Tennis, shuffleboard, and pickleball courts
  • Shell lei and children's gift on check-in

Cons

  • Furnishings in some units may need updating
  • No shops or restaurants on property
  • Lacks resort amenities

Take in sweeping views of the ocean and Haleakala from the large lanai of the one- to three-bedroom units at this sprawling, well-maintained property just outside the swanky Wailea Resort. There's not much in the way of amenities (pool, small whirlpool spa, tennis court, putting green, shuffleboard, and daily housekeeping), but just across the street is Kamaole Beach Park III, one of the area's most popular spots for family picnics and sunset watching.

Athenaeum Hotel

$$$$ | 26 S. Lake Dr., Chautauqua, NY, 14722, USA

One of few options within the Chautauqua Institution gates, this Victorian hotel faces Chautauqua Lake and is steps from the amphitheater. Opened in 1881, the Athenaeum frequently hosted Thomas Edison and was one of the first electrified hotels in the country. These days, however, modern advances (like central air-conditioning) are lacking, furnishings are threadbare, and the building is in dire need of restoration. It's pricey for the quality of rooms, though three meals a day are included. We've included the hotel in this book not because we strongly recommend it but because it is one of only two hotels on the grounds of the institute, and for some, location trumps quality and cost. Dinner (for those not staying at the hotel) is a five-course prix-fixe affair.

Pros

  • Fantastic location if attending the Chautauqua Institution
  • Friendly staff
  • Good food

Cons

  • Deteriorated
  • Expensive
  • Parking lot is a golf-cart ride or five-minute walk away

The Ballantyne Hotel

$$$$ | 10000 Ballantyne Commons Pkwy., Charlotte, NC, 28277, USA

This stately resort hotel offers a spa, indoor and outdoor pools, an expansive fitness center, and luxurious amenities, although the slightly gaudy nature of the Marriott property can feel more like the Bellagio than a classic Southern inn. The spacious guest rooms have classic furniture and color schemes of gold, cream, and sage, and many have large porches. One side of the hotel once looked out on a golf course, adding to the resort vibe, but the course is also being redeveloped into homes and commercial space.

Pros

  • Luxurious amenities
  • Spacious, lovely rooms, including many with large porches
  • Relaxing on-site spa

Cons

  • Not convenient for exploring city center
  • Lacks the charm of more intimate options

Bar Harbor Inn

$$$$ | 1 Newport Dr., Bar Harbor, ME, 04609, USA

Originally a men's social club for summer residents, this classically elegant hotel perched at the edge of downtown’s working waterfront has a luxury spa, a fabulous courtesy breakfast buffet, and rooms spread among three buildings on well-landscaped grounds; they include the 1887 main inn, with "unique" rooms in the original section and a modern hotel wing where many accommodations have water-view balconies, and Oceanfront Lodge, whose good-sized balconies afford the best sweep of the sea. Many rooms in the main building have gas fireplaces. In its own building in the midst of the complex, the spa offers everything from massages and mud wraps to aromatherapy and facials.

Baranof Hotel

$$$$ | 127 N. Franklin St., Juneau, AK, 99801, USA

Once Juneau's most prestigious hotel, the Baranof Hotel has begun to show its age, although it does retain some of its old glamour. The ground floor offers the property's most inviting spaces; the dark art-deco lobby creates an old-money atmosphere reminiscent of 1939, when the hotel first opened, and a small lounge, the Bubble Room, is a popular spot for legislators when they're in town. Rooms on the front side have the best views, but street noise may keep you awake at the lower levels.

Pros

  • Elegant public areas
  • Central location
  • 1930s ambience

The Biltmore

$$$$ | 1200 Anastasia Ave., FL, 33134, USA

Built in 1926, this landmark hotel has had several incarnations over the years—including a stint as a hospital during World War II—but through it all, this grande dame has remained an opulent reminder of yesteryear, with its palatial lobby and grounds, enormous pool (largest in the Lower 48), and distinctive 315-foot tower, which rises above the canopy of trees shading Coral Gables. The Biltmore has on-site golf and tennis, a spa and fitness center, and a host of excellent drinking and dining options. The magnificent pool is steeped in history—Tarzan's Johnny Weissmuller was a lifeguard here, and in the 1930s, grand aquatic galas featuring alligator wrestling, synchronized swimming, and bathing beauties drew thousands. To the west is the hotel's Biltmore Country Club, a richly ornamented Beaux Arts–style structure with a superb colonnade and courtyard. The Sunday champagne brunch is a local legend; try to get a table in the courtyard.

Pros

  • Breathtaking history-steeped lobby
  • Gorgeous pool
  • Great golf

Cons

  • In the suburbs
  • A car is necessary to get around
  • Daily $23 resort fee
