Four Seasons Hotel New York

$$$$ | 57 E. 57th St., New York, NY, 10022, USA

Though it opened in 1993, the soaring, dramatic ceilings and art deco--ish flourishes of the limestone lobby put this Four Seasons flagship more in league with some of the city's grande-dame hotels of yesteryear. Designed by famed architect I.M. Pei, the 52-floor, 682-foot-tall property is the second tallest hotel in the city. The 219 beige-clad guest rooms are more spacious than your typical New York hotel room and expect to be wowed by stunning city views. Marble bathrooms include a walk-in shower and large bath, plus beauty products from Spanish skincare company Natura Bissé. The dramatic lobby bar boasts an early-'60s vibe that make it ideal for sipping a martini or Manhattan before bed.

  • Stunning views, especially from higher floors
  • Very attentive service

Cons

  • For an upscale hotel, rooms lack some common amenities, like dental kits and Bluetooth speakers

Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village

$$$$ | 2 Dole Dr., Westlake Village, CA, 91362, USA

This sophisticated resort with its wide range of amenities—indoor and outdoor pools, multiple delicious restaurants, art gallery, and a sprawling spa and salon—and whole-life wellness programming is technically one L.A. County valley over from The Valley. But as its where quiet luxury-loving denizens in the know go for self-care staycations through the Center For Health & Wellbeing (or to carb-load on the extremely talented pastry chef's breads and desserts in both the all-day café and California brasserie Coin & Candor), it counts. With ample meeting and event spaces, it's also popular with the conference and team-building crowd, which often takes advantage of included fitness classes, meditation sessions, the teaching kitchen, and hiking excursions in the bucolic Santa Monica Mountains seen out the windows of most well-appointed rooms. (Lower levels stare more directly at the lush landscaping and towering rock waterfall.) Although most of the hotel is aimed at pleasing adults such as live jazz at the speakeasy or in-room G&T stations, children will get a kick out of the game room with ping pong and free arcade games, kids' club, and The Cove, a sun-worshipper's dream sanctuary complete with mammoth pool, several hot tubs, hammocks, a bocce court, daybed- and lounge-covered terraces, and a restaurant serving house-made paletas, Wagyu cheeseburgers, and lobster tacos. Sure, it's far from the Hollywood and downtown sites but you'll be enjoying indulging too much to want to leave.

Pros

  • Giant gym includes yoga and spin studios
  • Even bigger spa and wellness program
  • Multiple restaurants

Cons

  • Overlooks the freeway on one side
  • Far from L.A.'s biggest attractions
  • Too few free weekend fitness classes

$$$$ | 300 S. Doheny Dr., Los Angeles, CA, 90048, USA

High hedges and patio gardens make this hotel a secluded retreat that even the hum of traffic can't permeate—one reason it's a favorite of Hollywood's elite, whom you might spot at the pool and espresso bar. For a relaxing meal or a healthy smoothie, you can dine poolside on the tropically landscaped terrace. Massages here are among the best, and the nail salon lures the rich and famous. Francis Marion Hotel

$$$$ | 387 King St., Charleston, SC, 29403, USA

Wrought-iron railings, crown moldings, and decorative plasterwork speak of the elegance of 1924, when the Francis Marion was the largest hotel in the Carolinas. French Quarter Inn

$$$$ | 166 Church St., Charleston, SC, 29401, USA

A grand circular staircase under a light-filled cupola—with a wrought-iron banister embellished with iron leaves by a local blacksmith—sets the lavish tone at this boutique hotel steps from the City Market. The pillow menu is hard to beat; for an extra bit of luxury, try the big body pillows. Some rooms have fireplaces (yes, it does get cold enough for these October to February) and private balconies. Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort

$$$$ | 1 Tarpon Blvd., Fripp Island, SC, 29920, USA

On the island made famous in Pat Conroy's Prince of Tides, with 3½ miles of broad, white beach and unspoiled scenery, this private resort has long been known as a safe haven where kids are allowed to roam free, go crabbing at low tide, bike the trails, and swim. There are more than 150 individual villas and homes here instead of a hotel, though there is a variety of small efficiencies. It's a good getaway for sporty types who like to kayak and canoe, play golf or tennis, and go fishing out of the marina. Families love the narrated nature cruise and the nature center, not to mention all the activities for teenagers. The Georgian Hotel

$$$$ | 1415 Ocean Ave., Los Angeles, CA, 90401, USA

Driving by, you can't miss the Georgian, a Wes Anderson fever dream built in 1933: its art deco exterior is aqua, with ornate bronze grillwork and a charming oceanfront veranda. The interiors remind visitors of the hotel's roots as a playground for Golden Age Hollywood royalty. The contemporary pet-friendly guest rooms have a more neutral palette, but their curves and details give more than a nod to the 1930s. Popular with visiting Europeans, the hotel's lobby echoes with foreign languages, especially around the lively lobby bar. Enjoy a lazy brunch or an Italian-inspired meal at Sirena, where you can appreciate the beach, ocean, and city views, or dine inside the clubby restaurant. Better yet, escort your cronies into the reservation-only Georgian Room, a former speakeasy that now delights with period cocktails and a luxe yet still approachable Italian menu (try the Sunday prix-fixe). There's also the Library bar for hotel guests only, featuring complimentary drinks. The daily $40 amenity fee includes bubbly and bottled water upon check-in, an EV charging station, bike rentals, yoga mats, a 24-hour fitness center with Pelotons, and more. Not enough luxury yet? The GG Walla Walla

$$$$ | 922 Bonsella St., Walla Walla, 99362, USA

This luxury inn a block from Whitman College was opened in 2022 by twin sisters, Connie and Karrie, who bought the 1909 Arts and Crafts–style mansion that previously operated as the Green Gables Inn and quickly set out to transform it with their new vision of social connection and showcasing their art and antique collections. It sits among flowering plants and shrubs on a quaint, tree-lined street and offers five freshly decorated guest suites. The LV Suite has its own Louis Vuitton trunk (Carrie is a collector and her Louis Vuitton items are lovingly displayed throughout the house), while the Green Suite pays homage to the house's original owners, the Greens. Ghost Light Inn

$$$$ | 50 S. Main St., New Hope, PA, 18938, USA

By the river in the heart of town, this luxe rustic-chic boutique hotel notches up New Hope's lodging scene with modern rooms and a restaurant and bar (Stella) overlooking the water. Earthen-tone neutrals and textured finishes—a wood-lined wall, patterned carpet, metal and leather furnishings—and large bathrooms with double sinks and pebble tile in the showers make the inn an escape from New Hope's bustle but still relate to the river location. A refrigerator, coffeemaker, robes and slippers, and Italian linens are some amenities; a few rooms have Juliet balconies. Each room has a ghost light, referring to the theatrical tradition of leaving a pole with a single lightbulb on when a theater is not occupied, for safety and also so that any ghosts can perform. A sister property a block away, the Carriage House, has two rooms and a suite; you check in at the Ghost Light if you stay there.

Goldener Hirsch, Auberge Resorts Collection

$$$$ | 7520 Royal St., UT, 84060, USA

A beloved alpine escape for more than 30 years, this cozy and charming, Bavarian-style chalet got a modern upgrade in 2021 with the addition of two new buildings designed by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig, named one of the AD100 design firms by Architectural Digest. The sleek buildings added contemporary accommodations to the property, as well as a new lobby and lounge area, ski lockers for guests, a fitness center and sauna, and the crown jewel: Deer Valley's only rooftop pool and hot tub with panoramic mountain views. The new buildings connect to the original inn via a glass bridge skywalk. The 18 original rooms were spruced up, too, and feature fresh paint and new carpet, drapes, and minibars. On-site dining options include an Austrian-inspired restaurant offering lunch and dinner; the Antler Lounge, a new après gathering spot for food and drinks; and The Kitz, a coffee shop and café. Guest opportunities range from alpine fire cooking classes and Bavarian beer tastings to customized ski experiences and full moon mountain bike rides.

Pros

  • Ski-in, ski-out access at Deer Valley Resort
  • New, state-of-the-art accommodations
  • Rooftop pool and hot tub with mountain views

Cons

  • Short drive to Main Street
  • Expensive overnight parking
  • Limited nightlife options
