Heights House Hotel

$$$$ | 308 S. Boylan Ave., Raleigh, NC, 27603, USA

The kind of hotel that will have you checking neighborhood real estate listings, this elegant inn has been home to several families and a Baptist church before being transformed into nine luxury rooms, an intimate bar, and a romantic events venue. Guests are greeted with a glass of champagne before being led to a sun-soaked room with Egyptian cotton sheets, thoughtful technology (meaning: excellent plugs), and decor that feels both vintage and modern. The Boylan Heights location is the best of all worlds, close to downtown, Warehouse District galleries, and NC State campus. The Parlor is open to the public, serving afternoon tea, Italian-inspired cocktails and charcuterie, and themed Supper Club dinners. The historic nature of the property means no elevator (though there are ADA-accessible rooms), pool, or gym, but guests may use facilities at two nearby YMCAs.

Pros

  • Supper Club events
  • Intimate Parlor bar serves craft cocktails and afternoon tea
  • Walking distance from downtown Raleigh

Cons

  • No children under 18
  • Historic home doesn't accommodate an elevator
  • No pool or gym

Hermosa Inn

$$$$ | 5532 N. Palo Cristi Rd., AZ, 85253, USA

On 6 acres of lushly landscaped desert, the Hermosa is a blessedly peaceful alternative to some of the larger resorts nearby. This boutique hotel's ranch-style lodge was the home and studio of cowboy artist Lon Megargee in the 1930s; today the adobe structure houses Lon's at the Hermosa, justly popular for its New American cuisine. Villas as big as private homes and individually decorated casitas hold an enviable collection of Western art.

Pros

  • Luxurious but cozy
  • Pet-friendly
  • Fantastic restaurant

Cons

  • Neighborhood location means you'll have to drive to get anywhere
  • Lacks some luxury amenities of larger resorts nearby
  • Although delicious, only one restaurant

High Peaks Resort

$$$$ | 2384 Saranac Ave., Lake Placid, NY, 12946, USA

The 7-acre waterfront property that once was the Hilton has now become the newly renovated High Peaks. The property has accommodations in two buildings, one on Main Street in the center of town and another on the water. The entire property has been redone, so everything is new, including the lobby, the rooms, and three new restaurants—the casual Dancing Bears; the fine-dining venue Reflections; and PRs, a warm, elegant bar with a double fireplace. The breakfast plan, which includes a morning nosh at the Dancing Bears, costs extra. Rooms throughout the updated property are attractive, with tasteful wooden furniture and furnishings. Rooms in waterfront buildings have either a balcony or a patio for views of the lake. Complimentary rowboats and paddleboats are offered to guests for use at the resort's access to Mirror Lake.

Hilton Americas

$$$$ | 1600 Lamar St., Houston, TX, 77010, USA

Finally, Houston has a great convention-center hotel right in the heart of downtown's sporting venues. Massive, ornate, and luxurious, this is the largest hotel in Houston, with 1,203 rooms. Hilton Philadelphia Penn's Landing

$$$$ | 201 S. Columbus Blvd., Philadelphia, PA, 19106, USA

The theme here is \"room with a view,\" as this hotel on the banks of the Delaware offers dramatic river views from the 22-story tower; southern-facing rooms have views of both the river and the city. Although some rooms are showing a bit of wear and tear, the location is excellent if you wish to be on the river. The fourth-floor fitness center, which is open 24 hours, overlooks the waterfront, too. After you swim in the indoor pool, you can lounge on the outdoor sundeck. Likewise, the on-site hotel restaurant, Keating’s Rope & Anchor Bar + Kitchen, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner—and has both indoor seating and alfresco dining on a deck above the river.

Hilton Waikoloa Village

$$$$ | 69-425 Waikoloa Beach Dr., Waikoloa, HI, 96738, USA

Gondola trams glide by, pint-size guests zoom down the 175-foot waterslide, a bride poses on the grand staircase, a fire-bearing runner lights the torches along the seaside path at sunset—these are some typical scenes at this 62-acre megaresort. Shaded pathways lined with a multimillion-dollar Pacific Island art collection connect the three tall buildings, while Swiss-made trams and canal boats shuttle those who want to bypass the long hallways and meandering paths. Though there's no ocean beach, a seaside trail leads to Anaehoomalu Bay, one of the island's most beautiful tropical beaches. An ocean-side saltwater lagoon is great for families. Modern rooms in neutral tones have private lanai and are large enough to accommodate the families that flock here. The flagship restaurant, KPC (Kamuela Provision Company), presents incomparable coastline views. Although some may find the resort a fantasy version of Hawaii, others love it for its one-stop-shop approach to a Hawaii holiday.

Pros

  • Family-friendly saltwater lagoon
  • Lots of restaurant and activity options, including two golf courses
  • Close to retail shopping

Cons

  • Gigantic and crowded
  • $48 per night resort fee
  • Restaurants are pricey

The Hope and Glory Inn

$$$$ | 65 Tavern Rd., Irvington, VA, 22480, USA

This 1890 schoolhouse is now a pale honey-color Victorian B&B. The first-floor classrooms have been opened into an expansive, columned lobby with a painted checkerboard floor. The upstairs bedrooms and six small cottages behind the inn are decorated romantically chic, with pastel painted floors and decorative window treatments. In the garden, surrounded by a tall wooden fence, there's a completely open-air bathroom that can be booked by adventurous couples. In 2004 the inn built new cottages called "tents" in an allusion to turn-of-the-20th-century Methodist tent communities. On wooded bluffs overlooking the headwaters of Carter's Creek, the tents each have three bedrooms and a kitchen, and there's a pool and dock for canoes and kayaks, as well as the "Detention" wine bar.

Hotel Chaco

$$$$ | 2000 Bellamah Ave. NW, Albuquerque, NM, 87104, USA

A special commitment to New Mexico shines through in this dedicated study of Chaco Canyon as an inspiration for one of Albuquerque's most popular hotels; it uses materials meant to evoke the fine stone chinking that comprise most of the 9th- to 12th-century structures found at that deeply compelling ancient Puebloan site. Rooms are spacious and well-appointed in a cleanly austere way; details like petrified-wood sink basins suit the natural palette and black-and-white photos of the ruins found on the walls. Contemporary works by Native American artists greet you on every floor, and the second-floor kiva-shaped passageway provides a direct encounter with the artwork you can glimpse from the striking lobby below. Their Level 5 restaurant offers impressive views while on the ground floor, the Equinox Café & Bar, Crafted bar, and the superbly curated Gallery Hózhó complete the scene. Guests may bring their dogs, but an extra fee applies.

Pros

  • Contemplative outdoor lounge
  • Deep appreciation of New Mexico's arts and heritage in every detail
  • Full spa and 24/7 fitness center
