The Lodge at Sonoma Resort, Autograph Collection

$$$$ | 1325 Broadway, Sonoma, CA, 95476, USA

Handsome public areas and a destination restaurant by celebrity chef Michael Mina are among the selling points of this 10-acre, two-story, Mission Revival–style resort. A mural behind the front desk and the lobby's salon-style assemblage of paintings, drawings, photos, and ceramic plates highlight Sonoma's history. Mina's Wit & Wisdom Tavern is the fine-dining option, and there's a smaller café for breakfast and lunch. $$$$ | 1601 Collins Ave., FL, 33139, USA

This two-tower megahotel has 790 rooms with a soothing, sea-inspired motif, top-tier amenities, a massive spa, a great pool, and direct beachfront access, making it a great choice for families, businesspeople, groups, and pet lovers. When it was built in 1998, Loews managed not only to snag 99 feet of beach but also to take over the vacant St. Moritz next door and restore it to its original 1939 art deco beauty. The entire complex combines boutique charm with updated opulence. How big is it? The Loews has 85,000 square feet of meeting space and an enormous ocean-view grand ballroom. Makena Surf

$$$$ | 4850 Makena Alanui, Makena, HI, 96753, USA

For travelers who've done all there is to do on Maui and just want simple but luxurious relaxation at a condo that spills onto a private beach, this is the spot. The secluded complex, which hugs the South Shore coastline, is designed to belie its size—from the road it's hard to tell that the two- to three-bedroom units are taller than a palm tree, all with ocean views. Privacy envelops the grounds, which include remnants of an ancient Hawaiian fishing heiau (a temple comprising a rock formation).

Pros

  • Away from it all, yet still close enough to "civilization"
  • Great snorkeling right off the beach
  • Laundry facilities in every unit and daily housekeeping

Cons

  • Too secluded and "locked-up" for some
  • Split-level units may be difficult for guests with mobility issues
  • Check-in at a different location

Mana Kai Maui

$$$$ | 2960 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, HI, 96753, USA

You simply cannot get any closer to gorgeous Keawakapu Beach than this unsung hero of South Shore hotels, offering both renovated hotel rooms and condos that may be older than those of its competitors but are well priced and have marvelous ocean views, especially during the winter humpback whale season. One- and two-bedroom condos have private lanai and kitchens, and on-site amenities include a heated oceanfront pool, an activity desk, and a yoga studio.

Pros

  • Arguably the best beach on the South Shore
  • Good for families
  • Free reserved parking

Cons

  • Older property
  • Interior design might not appeal to discerning travelers
  • Some rooms are small
