The Resort at Paws Up

$$$$ | 40060 Paws Up Rd., Greenough, MT, 59823, USA

This authentic cattle ranch of some 37,000 acres of forests and grasslands is the perfect place to try "glamping," though staying in one of the perma-tents at Paws Up is a long way from roughing it. Think luxurious, safari-style tents, complete with fine linens, en suite baths, and a "camping butler." For even more refinement, try one of the luxury homes, each with its own outdoor hot tub. Included in your stay is the use of an electric car to navigate around the expansive ranch, where you can fly-fish in the Blackfoot River, go horseback riding, or pamper yourself at "Spa Town." Kids will never be bored thanks to the daily Kids Corps of Discovery offering activities lasting a full or half day.

  • True luxury accommodations and first-class service
  • Earned a Dining-Wine Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator

The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown, Washington, D.C.

$$$$ | 3100 South St. NW, Washington, DC, 20037, USA

Once an incinerator dating from the 1920s, this building still topped with a smokestack might seem the most unlikely of places for a luxury hotel, but settle into one of the large and chicly designed guest rooms. A fire theme unites the intimate spaces, a complete departure from the chain's more traditional style, while exceptionally spacious guest rooms, outfitted in restful hues of mint and gray, convey the opposite effect. If you're looking for a place to relax, its modern spa is small but luxurious, with a relaxation lounge, steam room, and treatment rooms. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, NoMad

$$$$ | 25 W. 28th St., New York, NY, 10001, USA
Occupying a new, luxury 50-story building at the northern end of NoMad, this sleek, all-glass hotel is a departure for the Ritz brand, thanks to its emerging neighborhood, versus tried and true, location. Its double height doors whisk guests into a soothing interior of neutral, light-filled rooms paired with a food and beverage program helmed by Michelin-starred chef José Andrés. Andrés ground-floor restaurant, Zaytinya, runs Mediterranean; The Bazaar mixes Spanish and Japanese influences; and his plush rooftop bar, Nubeluz, serves tapas and cocktails alongside floor-to-ceiling windows with near-panoramic views. Request a room on the 22nd floor or above for downtown views, along with all the creature comforts you'd expect of the brand.

Sagamore Pendry Baltimore

$$$$ | 1715 Thames St., Baltimore, MD, 21231, USA

The cornerstone of Fells Point has long been the Rec Pier building, once an immigration hub, then later the setting for the TV series Homicide: Life on the Street, and now a 128-room boutique gem that has inspired a neighborhood-wide renaissance. Andrew Carmellini's Rec Pier Chop House has prime placement beneath the hallowed brick archway. Guest rooms are part of a new addition and feature harbor or courtyard views, wood floors, and lots of extras.

Pros

  • Stunning infinity pool overlooking the harbor and Domino Sugar Factory
  • Gorgeous circa-1914 ballroom with original windows and state-of-the-art technology
  • Free Wi-Fi throughout

Cons

  • Not within walking distance of downtown attractions
  • No spa
  • Soundproofing in rooms falls short of filtering noise from inside and outside the hotel

The Sagamore South Beach, the Art Hotel

$$$$ | 1671 Collins Ave., FL, 33139, USA

This supersleek, all-white, all-suites hotel in the middle of the action looks and feels like an edgy art gallery, filled with brilliant contemporary works, the perfect complement to the posh, gargantuan, 500-square-foot crash pads. With all the mind-bending hipness, you might expect South Beach pretentiousness, but there's none here. In fact, the service is excellent. All suites have some kind of kitchen component, with at least a microwave and mini-refrigerator, sometimes a full refrigerator and stove. What else? How about huge flat-screen TVs and whirlpool baths? As you might expect of such an arty place, hallways are lined with noted artists' quotes, and public restrooms feature avant-garde video installations. The 500-square-foot terrace overlooking the ocean is great for spa parties.

Pros

  • Sensational pool
  • Great location
  • Good rate specials

Cons

  • Can be quiet on weekdays
  • Daily resort fee
  • Limited on-site dining
