Kokopelli's Cave

$$$$ | Farmington, NM, 87401, USA

Carved into the cliff side 250 feet above the La Plata River and surrounded by distant mountains (on a clear day you can see Shiprock and the Chuskas), this man-made cave's exposed sandstone walls trace 70 million years of erosion history. Blasted out in the 1980s and '90s—and originally intended as a getaway office for a local geologist—the decor is generally modern, with a bit of a 1960s "conversation pit" feel. It's laid out like a home, with a fireplace in the den, full kitchen, and a rustic shower that trickles into a hot tub. Two terraces provide breathtaking views, and a trail on the cliff face runs some 70 vertical feet to the parking area. The cave accommodates up to six people and remains a temperate 72°F year-round. Book at least one month in advance. Note: Guests are instructed to stop at the manager's home to check in before going to the cave. Lindy Poole, the congenial manager, will accompany all visitors on their first time out—and fill them in on some of the antics it took to outfit the place.

Pros

  • The space is immaculate, and more spacious—tall people will be comfortable—than photos indicate
  • It is a truly unique experience to stay inside a cave on a cliff dwelling

Cons

  • Cave isn't easy to access, especially with large luggage
  • Food supplied is supermarket-deli caliber

Le Méridien Philadelphia

$$$$ | 1421 Arch St., Philadelphia, PA, 19102, USA

Offering an alternative to more standard chain hotels near the convention center, the 10-story Le Méridien occupies an old YMCA built in 1908 that has maintained some architectural character. The contrast between the building's inherent charm, such as the ornate woodwork lining the archways of the airy lobby, and the hotel's modern decor comes off smoothly. Landings for the upper floors are cantilevered to the original brick wall of a 75-foot atrium that fills the property's center with natural light; some rooms have only a view of this atrium. The posh modern rooms (updated in 2024 and 2025), done in gray, beige, and white with pops of color, may seem a bit spare: some have only one mod chair besides the desk chair. Southern-facing rooms have views of City Hall. Wi-Fi is complimentary in the lobby.

Pros

  • Hipper alternative (for a Marriott) near convention center
  • 24-hour gym
  • Coffee and cocktails in the lobby gathering space

Le Méridien Tampa, The Courthouse

$$$$ | 601 N. Florida Ave., Tampa, FL, 33602, USA

A meticulous renovation transformed a marble-adorned, circa-1905 federal courthouse into a boutique hotel where your sleek room might have formerly been a holding cell or a prosecutor's office. The hostess stand in the Bizou Brasserie, which offers French-inspired fare and a wonderful assortment of morning pastries, once served as a witness stand, and juries once deliberated at a large table that's now in the bar area. Other amenities include a pool and a fitness center.

Pros

  • Close to Downtown attractions
  • Fascinating for history buffs
  • Decent on-site amenities

Cons

  • Area traffic can be a nightmare
  • Loud echoes in all those marble hallways
  • Small pool
