Belfry Inn & Bistro

$$ | 6 Jarves St., Sandwich, MA, 02563, USA

This sophisticated complex comprises a 1901 former church (the Abbey), an ornate wood-frame 1882 Victorian (the Painted Lady), and an 1827 Federal-style house (the Village House), and the theme in each is a nod to the buildings' respective histories—the Painted Lady's charmingly appointed guest rooms, for example, are named after former inhabitants. The luxurious rooms in the Abbey, named for the six days of the Creation, have whirlpool tubs and gas fireplaces; if it's available, splurge on the Tuesday room: the incredible stained-glass "compass" window will take your breath away.

Pros

  • Great in-town location
  • Bright, beautiful, and spacious rooms
  • Dramatic architecture

Cons

  • Some steep stairs
  • Not suited for families
  • Some rooms can be on the smaller side

Some rooms have screened-in porches; others face a peaceful garden landscaped with native plants. The buildings are on a cliff, and have stunning views of Downtown Dallas, especially at night. The Benson Hotel

$$ | 309 S.W. Broadway, OR, 97205, USA

Portland's venerable grande dame may now be overshadowed by several other upscale properties in town in terms of chic design, but the Benson has hosted countless presidents and celebrities since it opened in 1913, and its guest rooms both capture the hotel's storied legacy while offering plenty of modern comforts, like fluffy organic bathrooms and slippers and super-plush modern beds. The hand-carved Circassian walnut paneling from Russia and the Italian white-marble staircase are among the noteworthy design touches in the gracious lobby, which is home to the swanky Palm Court lounge. The old-school restaurant, El Gaucho steak house, is a favorite of local power brokers.
