FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

East Austin’s landmark, ARRIVE, is a masonry structure shaped as a giant piece of abstract art. The 2019 build has an industrial bohemian aesthetic and features 83 guest rooms, a Spanish restaurant, and a patio bar. The boutique hipster hotel fits in nicely on this trendy nightlife stretch of East Sixth Street. Guests can access some of the most sought-after bars and restaurants in town by foot, bike, or car. (Safe street parking can be scarce, however). The on-site Lefty's Brick Bar is a casual neighborhood bar and courtyard restaurant, and there's also a spacious rooftop patio. The staff is friendly and eager to help a younger-skewing clientele who don't mind the sparse amenities.

Caesars Entertainment

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

This ornate and lavish hotspot opened in 1966, making it one of the oldest remaining resorts on the Las Vegas Strip. Since then, the property has undergone several modernizations, and a star turn in movies such as “The Hangover.” Today, each guest’s Caesars Palace experience depends on which of the six towers in which they’re staying; newer accommodations such as the Agustus Tower and the Nobu Hotel are the fanciest, while the circa-1966 Julius Tower has kitsch appeal. Despite its size (3,980 rooms in all), Caesars still has an air of sophistication and service. Consider these high roller vibes.

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Miami Beach has landed on the Las Vegas Strip with this new resort hotel, which at 67 stories is the tallest inhabited building in the state. Along with its neighbor, Resorts World (which opened in 2021), the blue behemoth has brought action and excitement to a part of town that had suffered from a couple of moribund decades. Rooms and suites are subtly decorated (here the blues are soft) and clock in at 488 to 660 square feet, with floor-to-ceiling windows and such amenities as spa-style robe and slippers and personal cooling drawers (although refrigerators are available). Suites, which run from 896 to 937 square feet, have comfortable seating areas, soaking tubs or walk-in showers, and a doorbell and service-request system; the most lavish suites, Fleur de Lys Suites, have a VIP lounge check-in, butler service, and custom Italian linens and are as large as 3,497 square feet. The six-acre Oasis Pool Deck, with six pools, is seasonal.

The LINE Austin

4.5
Overall Editor Rating
$$ | 111 E. Cesar Chavez St., Austin, TX, 78701, USA
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Downtown may have become a step-and-repeat of chain establishments, but The Line is one of the few places that proudly holds on to Austin’s revered musical heritage. This was previously a jazz club that broadcast live on local radio in the sixties. Now a medium-sized hotel with a boutique feel, the strings keep on strumming across vibey social spaces including a lakeside pool, taco shack, and terrace bar.

The Venetian Resort

4
Overall Editor Rating
$$ | 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Las Vegas, NV, 89109, USA
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

A visit to this sprawling casino resort is eerily like crossing through a portal to Venice, in Italy. Manmade canals (with singing gondoliers!) replicate those in the Italian namesake, and a Vegas-style version of St. Mark’s Square is lined with restaurants and paved with “cobblestones,” just like the real thing. Including the two towers of the main hotel and the Palazzo Tower to the north (which used to be a separate property), the resort has a total of 7,117 rooms. This makes it the largest hotel in North America and second largest in the world.

Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Since it opened in 2005, Wynn Las Vegas has been renowned as one of the most luxurious casino resorts in Las Vegas. All 4,841 rooms and suites are exquisite, with details such as leather chairs and Crestron tablets to control basic room functions. Wynn remains the only Strip resort to have its own golf course—a course that hard-core golf nerds love to play. The resort also is home to XS and Encore Beach Club, arguably the hottest nightclub and day club duo in Las Vegas over the last 10 years.

THE BEST HOTEL IN USA

Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley at East Palo Alto

$$ | 2050 University Ave., Palo Alto, CA, 94303, USA
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

There is luxury at every turn in this stalwart accommodation for the Silicon Valley power players from the prestigious global brand. Technically, the hotel is in East Palo Alto, the historically-challenged neighbor of Palo Alto, but the hotel is situated right on busy U.S. 101, so it’s incredibly convenient to both San Francisco and the main office areas. The typical Four Seasons bells and whistles are here with particularly comfortable beds; terrific work desks with ergonomic chairs (this is the heart of Silicon Valley after all); an on-site spa; excellent service; and a thoughtful, upscale modern design that feels posh and Californian together. For a sense of how the movers and shakers network in this pivotal region, just spend happy hour or peak morning coffee rush here.

Pros

  • Outstanding attention to detail everywhere
  • Great bar and Quattro Restaurant
  • Quiet, spacious rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows

THE BEST HOTEL IN USA

Highbrook Motel

$$ | 94 Eden St., Bar Harbor, ME, 04609, USA
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

At this top-ranked motel on downtown's outskirts, run by the third generation of the family that’s owned it since 1978, original mid-century features like porcelain tile and tubs and wood-framed screen doorsto usher in ocean breezesdon't show their age. The 24-hour access lobby shows the same meticulous attention to maintenance and cleanliness, even with free microwave popcorn available (and movie-style containers to put it in). Painted light blue, guest rooms are in two one-story buildings and have at-door parking. Most furnishings are newer, but some rooms have original bureaus and headboards that add to the relaxing yesteryear vibe. Adirondack chairs await at the Island Explorer bus stop out front; across the street, a multiuse path leads to Bar Harbor's waterfront.

Pros

  • Rooms have inside sitting areas and most have outside ones, too
  • One of two motel buildings has larger rooms and baths (adjoining dressing area)
  • Order-ahead complimentary breakfast is delivered to guest rooms

Cons

  • Microwave in the lobby but not rooms

THE BEST HOTEL IN USA

Pendry West Hollywood

$$ | 8430 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, CA, 90069, USA
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

The art-deco design of this Pendry hotel exudes contemporary luxury from the moment you drive into the circular drive. The artwork is exquisite, including a steel and glass Portal Icosahedron sculpture by Anthony James. Even though the hotel is filled with eye-popping art, the hotel's true standout feature is the rooftop restaurant Merois, helmed by world-famous chef Wolfgang Puck. Guest rooms and Merois have glorious views of the Hollywood Hills and West Hollywood below. Modern in-room amenities include hardwood flooring, comfortable beds, and marble bathrooms. Everywhere you look, you'll find a nice surprise: there's the 100-seat live music venue, a bowling alley/bar, a champagne vending machine, and Cadillacs that you can just take out for a complimentary spin around town. This is a pet-friendly hotel. The fee is $150 per pet during your stay.

Pros

  • High level of service
  • Free use of Cadillacs
  • Wolfgang Puck restaurants

Cons

  • Valet parking is pricey

The Commons Hotel, Minneapolis

"Inner geek-meets-chic" is the self-proclaimed—and apt—description of this cozy and quirky University-area hotel in Minneapolis whose warm, inviting vibe, starts at the fire pit in the driveway (where guests can roast s'mores) and continues to complimentary apple cider in the lobby. A roster of unique activities and events—from Book Butlers and Sudoku "sleep-ins" to mixology lessons, Words with Friends Wine Hours, and Retro Bar Bingo—are what help make the "Commons" name refer more to "communal" than "typical." Other social draws include the Beacon Public House gastro-pub, serving regional cuisine and creative cocktails, and a refurbished fitness center. Up on the eight floors, the redone rooms now have an upscale-academic decor of blue velvets, rich leathers, and argyle wallpaper, plus features like iPod docks, LCD TVs, Starbucks coffee, rain showers, and free Wi-Fi. Upgrades to a Superior room get you robes and bottled water, while suites have separate living areas with sleeper sofas.

Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Hollywood
Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel

The historic, party-centric Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, known for hosting the first Academy Awards ceremony, has played host to some of the movie industry's most important people and events, but, it's also approachable enough for regular folks looking to experience Los Angeles. Though its rooms were recently renovated to keep them fresh, they still boast hints of the Old Hollywood era, keeping it connected to its roots. Meanwhile, the lobby's original Spanish Colonial Revival details that evoke early Hollywood glamour, including the Spanish tiles, painted ceilings, arches, and fountains, remain and are beautifully preserved. Stay in a poolside cabana room if you want to stay close to the heated, David Hockney--painted pool, or get a room at the tower if you want to be away from the poolside parties. Modern amenities include a flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi and a minibar, though on-site restaurants Shirley Brasserie and 25 Degrees will keep you well fed. Seeking nightlife? No need to leave the property with a scenic lobby bar and popular Spare Room bar (with bowling lanes) just downstairs.

Set in a former hat factory, this hotel has a gorgeous year-round rooftop with skyline views, impressively spacious rooms, and several buzzing bars and restaurants. Rooms have oak floors, 12-foot loft-style ceilings, and custom writing desks inspired by early-1900s sewing machines. The Refinery Rooftop has three fun, distinct spaces open regardless of the weather: a terrace, a patio with a retractable glass roof, and an indoor lounge with fireplace—all under the shadow of the Empire State Building. The Standard, High Line

$$ | 848 Washington St., New York, NY, 10014, USA Fodor's Choice
The Standard, Meatpacking District
Courtesy The Standard

This modern architectural statement is perpetually one of New York's hottest hotels, with the High Line running underneath it, a lobby full of glamorous types, an authentic beer garden (open year-round; dig the table tennis), and an 18th-floor nightclub that is one of the toughest doors in town. Rooms, with low platform beds, are on the small side (even by New York standards) but floor-to-ceiling windows add a sense of space. Some rooms have showers separated from the bedroom by little more than a glass partition. As you'd expect in a space (and neighborhood) that's so sceney, it can get loud at night. The Standard Grill restaurant, which is almost always packed, handles room service.

Pros

  • Nice building with sweeping views
  • Beautiful people
  • Impressive restaurant space

Cons

  • Noisy at night
  • Tight rooms
  • Can be too trendy

The Union Station Nashville Yards

$$ | 1001 Broadway, Nashville, TN, 37203, USA Fodor's Choice
Union Station Hotel, Nashville
Courtesy of Union Station Hotel

With a 65-foot barrel-vaulted lobby ceiling, granite walls, huge stone fireplaces, stained-glass windows, crystal chandeliers, and even its own blend of Jack Daniel's whiskey, a stay at this renovated 1900 train station includes a unique peek into local history; the building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977. Other notable architectural details include marble floors, oak-accented walls, limestone fireplaces, and bas-relief panels. Each guest room is a little different, but all have high ceilings, plush bedding, crisp decor, and, in some cases, marble soaking tubs. The cozy bistro, Stationairy, is even cozier on chilly nights when the fireplace is lit.

Pros

  • Beautiful public spaces
  • Unique setting, with notable architecture and history
  • Rooms feel like city apartments rather than hotel rooms

Cons

  • Elevators are small and dark (so hurrah for the wide open staircases)
  • Valet parking is expensive
  • Hallways can be narrow and dim

Waimea Plantation Cottages, West Side Kauai
Waimea Plantation Cottages

Originally built in the early 1900s, these relocated and refurbished one- to five-bedroom sugar-plantation workers' cottages are tucked in a coconut grove along a lovely walkable stretch of beach on the sunny West Side. Swimming waters here are often murky, but morning and evening strolls on the black sand are special. Cozy homes of different sizes feature porches, plantation-era furnishings, full modern kitchens, Wi-Fi, and cable TV. Guests can use the swimming pool, barbecue grills, bocce court, and hammocks on the grounds, and eat on the wraparound porch of the family-style restaurant. This could be an excellent choice for informal destination weddings or family reunions. Waimea Town has limited shops and eateries, but it's close to Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Parks.

Pros

  • Unique lodging experience
  • Quiet setting and lovely grounds
  • Full kitchens

Cons
