$$ | 1060 Adella Ave., San Diego, CA, 92118, USA Fodor's Choice

Smaller but no less luxurious than the sprawling beach resorts of Coronado, this lodge—whose name alludes to the main building's former life as a boardinghouse built in 1906—welcomes couples for romantic retreats two blocks from the ocean. 250 Main Hotel

$$ | 250 Main St., Rockland, ME, 04841, USA Fodor's Choice

Finely crafted by local shipwrights, this jazzy little boutique hotel is filled with stylish and colorful mid-century-modern design. Displayed throughout the common areas, a curated, changing collection of pieces by local artists adds to the appeal; if one of the works speaks to you, you can buy it. With a sleek fireplace to warm up cool evenings, the expansive lobby is a cheery, welcoming space to relax with friends, perhaps with wine or a craft beer from the small bar. A fantastic roof deck offers guests a 360-degree view of the harbor, the bay beyond, and the town; it's a perfect spot for unwinding as the sun sets after a day at sea or hiking. 29 Palms Inn

$$ | 73950 Inn Ave., Twentynine Palms, CA, 92277, USA Fodor's Choice

Accommodations at the closest lodging to Joshua Tree National Park's north entrance are in adobe-and-wood-frame cottages, some dating from the 1920s and '30s (indeed, James Cagney was often found playing the piano in the inn's bar back in the day), set on 70 acres of grounds that include the ancient Oasis of Mara, a popular bird-watching spot, and the organic farm that provides produce to the on-site restaurant. The innkeepers' gracious, personalized service more than makes up for the rusticity of the cottages. Weekends see free nature walks and yoga sessions.

Pros

  • Restaurant is one of the best in town
  • On-site pool and nearby art gallery
  • Gracious innkeepers

Cons

  • Homespun accommodations

Acadia Oceanside Meadows Inn

A must for nature lovers, this lodging sits on a 200-acre preserve dotted with woods, streams, salt marshes, and ponds, with spacious guest rooms in two historic buildings that are furnished with antiques, country pieces, and family treasures and overlook a private white-sand beach (rare for these parts) flanked by granite ledges; it's also home to Oceanside Meadows Institute for the Arts and Sciences, which holds lectures, musical performances, art exhibits, and other events in the restored barn. Ace Hotel

$$ | 2423 1st Ave., Seattle, 98121, USA Fodor's Choice

The Ace is a dream come true for anyone who appreciates unique minimalist decor, with touches like army-surplus blankets, industrial metal sinks, and street art breaking up any notion of austerity; the cheapest rooms share bathrooms, which have enormous showers. Almost everything is white—even the wood floors and brick walls have been painted—making elements like randomly placed tree stumps pop in the gallery-like spaces. A small dining room hosts a continental breakfast and has a vending machine with unusual items like Japanese snacks and hangover cures. This is a very specific experience and aesthetic: if you're not soothed (or stimulated) by the stripped-down quality of the rooms or not amused by finding a copy of the Kama Sutra where the Bible would be, you may want to stay elsewhere.

Pros

  • Ultratrendy but affordable
  • Good place to meet other travelers
  • Free Wi-Fi

Cons

  • Half the rooms have shared bathrooms
  • Not for people who want pampering
  • Lots of stairs to get to lobby

The Admiral Fell Inn

$$ | 888 S. Broadway, Baltimore, MD, 21231, USA Fodor's Choice

This inn is an upright anchor at the center of the action in funky Fells Point. By joining together buildings constructed between the late 1770s and the 1920s, the owners created a structure that resembles a small, European-style hotel, with lots of character and quirks. The rooms, which vary in shape, all have four-poster canopy beds. Three suites and eight rooms have whirlpool baths. Some hallways have a few stairs, and some rooms face a quiet, interior courtyard; if steps or street noise bother you, let the reservation agent know.

Pros

  • Provides a good sense of history
  • Close to nightlife

ARIA Resort & Casino

$$ | 3730 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Las Vegas, NV, 89158, USA Fodor's Choice

Unlike most casino hotels, ARIA has an abundance of light, even in standard guest rooms (every one of which has corner views), and their modern style makes this one of the Strip's most contemporary-feeling options (not to mention the excellent pool area). Tech-geeks will love the touch-screen pad that can handle reservations and ordering and control everything from lights to temperature (check out the \"good-night\" button, which powers it all down). Bathrooms are modern and spacious, and nightly turndown service and laptop-size safes are nice touches. The ARIA Sky Suites are notable and start at more than 1,000 square feet; they are downright palatial and have some of the best views in town (as well as their own lobby and pool). The pool deck is also worth exploring, especially for midweek cabana specials, which can be surprisingly affordable. ARIA remains one of the largest buildings in the world to achieve LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Austin Motel

$$ | 1220 S. Congress Ave., Austin, TX, 78704, USA Fodor's Choice

What used to be a fading 1938 motor court is now a revamped, quintessentially Austin motel that sits pretty in the heart of South Congress’s stretch of trendy restaurants and shops. It's a favorite with hipsters, artists, and LBGTQ+-friendly folk, who hang by the kidney-shape pool, where live music and special dance and aerobic classes are hosted regularly. Funky, throwback rooms are expertly outfitted with retro decor and kitschy accoutrements, like the signature Bunkhouse kimono robes in every bathroom. The staff, made up of laid-back locals, aims to please.

Pros

  • Prime location in the heart of SoCo
  • LGBTQ+ friendly
  • Retro pool complete with full bar service

Cons

  • High price point
  • Throwback style could read as outdated to some
  • Not for overly fussy luxury travelers

AutoCamp Joshua Tree

$$ | 62209 Verbena Rd., Joshua Tree, CA, 92252, USA Fodor's Choice

A stay at this pristine property, opened in 2022 by a trusted name in Golden State glamping, barely qualifies as roughing it thanks to refurbished Airstream and other more spacious RVs (four of them ADA accessible) that are done in calming neutral tones; filled with space-saving hacks; and equipped with panoramic windows, TVs, high-thread-count sheets on actual mattresses, kitchenettes, full bathrooms, and workhorse HVAC systems. The amenities fee covers the use of bicycles, weekly programs like stargazing and yoga, and morning coffee or tea and granola. Lawn games, a play area, and a pool that's heated in winter keep the kids happy. There's also an on-site market that carries food and booze, as well as an all-day café.

Pros

  • Bathrooms inside trailers means no midnight walks to communal toilets
  • Quonset hut lounge can be rented for events
  • Café makes an awesome chicken potpie

Cons

  • Have to carry or wagon luggage from parking lot to the trailers
  • No blackout shades, so morning light streams in
  • Snack shop is pricey
