Black Bear Lodge

$$$ | 1202 Ski Run Blvd., South Lake Tahoe, CA, 96150, USA Fodor's Choice

Built in the 1990s with meticulous attention to detail, the original section of this 2-acre complex feels like an Adirondack resort, with lodge rooms and highly recommended kitchenette-equipped cabins with fine art, fireplaces, and 19th-century American antiques. Blue Seas Courtyard

$$ | 4525 El Mar Dr., FL, 33308, USA Fodor's Choice

Husband-and-wife team Marc and Cristie Furth have run this whimsical Mexican-theme motel in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea since 1971. Across the street from family-friendly beaches, lattice fences, gurgling fountains, and gardens of cacti and impatiens provide privacy for the patio and heated pool. A Mexican-hacienda aesthetic welcomes guests to their rooms with hand-painted and stenciled furnishings and terra-cotta tiles.
