El Rancho

$ | 1000 E. Historic Rte. 66, Gallup, NM, 87301, USA Fodor's Choice

For a combination of aging '50s-era nostalgia and Old West glamour, book a night in El Rancho's Katharine Hepburn or Ronald Reagan room. All units at this 1937 National Register historic property are named for vintage movie stars, many of whom stayed here back when Hollywood Westerns were shot in the region (the connection goes deeper—El Rancho was built by R.E. Griffith, D.W. Griffith's brother). Rooms are basic, accented with Western prints and a few other flourishes. The restaurant ($), open all day, is cozy and serves acceptable American and Mexican food. You can browse through the on-site shop for pottery, kachinas, and sand paintings.

  • At Christmas the lights—and two-story tree—are a serious throwback, and an assuredly warming sight

Cons

  • Rooms do vary—don't be shy about asking to see a few

The Garland

$ | 4222 Vineland Ave., Los Angeles, CA, 91602, USA Fodor's Choice

This Valley cool kid—a 7-acre hideaway that lures locals and out-of-towners with a stellar restaurant, fun bars, fabulous retro flair, and too many amenities and programming to list—comes with Hollywood pedigree as it was originally opened by '70s TV mom Beverly Garland and her husband in 1973. Lovingly restored and injected with kitschy life by her son and his husband a decade ago, rooms, all of which come with private balconies or patios, double-paned windows, are set in two separate buildings and brimming with pops of orange and loud mid-century patterns. Kids rooms have partitioned areas with bunk beds and DVD players while wellness suites are fitted with a Peloton Bike, BowFlex adjustable weights, white noise machines, and a Mirror fitness system. Spending the entirety of your vacation here would be easy with the large pool, hot tubs, fireplace, a park-like lawn where they hold yoga classes, live music on Thursday and Friday, a taco cart, great gift shop, and games in the courtyard. Want to explore beyond its borders? An adorable trolley can take you to Universal Studios or a metro station for free.

Pros

  • Large pool with dive-in movies
  • Private balcony or patio in each room
  • Plenty of in-house activities and amenities

Cons

  • Close to the freeway
  • Weekly nonrefundable $75 pet fee

Hotel Congress

$ | 311 E. Congress St., Tucson, AZ, 85701, USA Fodor's Choice

This hotel, built in 1919, has been artfully restored to its original Western version of art deco; it's now the center of Tucson's hippest scene and a great place for younger and adventurous travelers to stay. The gangster John Dillinger was almost caught here in 1934—apparently his luggage, filled with guns and ammo, was suspiciously heavy. Each room has a black-and-white tile bath and the original iron bed frames. The convenient location Downtown means it can be noisy, so make sure you don't get a room over the popular Club Congress (a nightclub with dance parties) or Century Room (a jazz lounge with live music nightly), unless you plan to be up until the wee hours.

Pros

  • Prime location
  • Great restaurant and bars
  • Historic, funky, and fun

Cons

  • No elevator to guest rooms
  • No TVs in rooms (only in common areas)

Imperial Hotel

$ | 14202 Old Hwy. 49, Amador City, CA, 95601, USA Fodor's Choice

A judicious 2023 makeover broadened the appeal of one-block Amador City's 1879 redbrick hotel without sacrificing the throwback feel of the guest rooms, two with balconies overlooking town. A wooden staircase leads directly from the lobby bar to three second-floor rooms with king beds, three with queens, and all with exposed brick walls and painstakingly sanded original floors. The bathrooms, equipped with period-sensitive fixtures, are stocked with high-quality products. As with the hotel, renovations to the restaurant preserved a sense of the past, with the updated farm-to-fork cuisine providing contemporary travelers additional incentive to book here. A nearby hilltop cottage contains three larger suites. Rates are higher for these, but good views and a quieter setting compensate.

Pros

  • History-evoking stay

  • Three larger cottage suites nearby

Cons

The Inn at Halona

Your only opportunity to stay right in the heart of Zuni, this cheery inn is decorated with handwoven rugs, fine Zuni arts and crafts, and locally made furniture. Six of the rooms have private baths; two share a bath. Outside you can relax in the tree-shaded, enclosed, flagstone courtyard or walk the winding streets that surround Zuni's main plaza. Limited room service is available if you order ahead, or you may purchase ingredients at the tribe-staffed Halona Plaza market next door—which is also where Inn guests must go to check in—and prepare a meal in the communal kitchen. Opened in 1913 and renovated in 1987, the park's only hotel is trim, tidy, and remote (15 miles from the nearest road and less than ½ mile from Canada); it also has a colorful history that begins with its initial proprietress, Madame Nellie Bly, who, as the story goes, sold it to a bootlegger in 1918 for $1,000 and four bottles of whiskey. Some of the property's 12 historic rooms share baths; half of the 10 larger, pricier, and more modern adjacent villas have kitchens. It's hard to beat the sunset views from the veranda.
