Ballard Inn

$ | 5300 Ballard Ave. NW, Seattle, 98107, USA

Travelers seeking an authentic Seattle neighborhood experience will fall hard for this charming budget-friendly inn right in the heart of Ballard, tucked between coffee shops, trendy boutiques, and restaurants. It's got character too: the 1909 property, a former bank, is done in a minimalist, modern Louis XIV style, from the giant black rosette chandelier in the black-and-white lobby to the gold-leaf French provincial dressers, blue walls, and quilted headboards in some rooms upstairs. Other than the deluxe king rooms, the rooms use shared bathrooms. Two of the four suites have separate entrances for a private apartment-like feel.

Pros

  • Friendly staff
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Comfy beds

Cons

  • No elevator (ask for a room on main floor if stairs are an issue)
  • Thin walls and street noise

Bally's Atlantic City

$ | 1900 Pacific Ave., Atlantic City, NJ, 08401, USA

Rooms come in a variety of styles at this beachfront property: the main building, the 1860 Dennis Hotel, incorporates traditional and contemporary interior schemes; Claridge Tower rooms are bright and airy; Garden Tower rooms are spacious and embrace environmentally friendly practices; and Bally's Tower rooms go art deco. That's to say nothing of the boutique hotel aesthetic in their newly renovated Ruby Rooms, with their sleek and modern red, white, brown—and zebra print—furnishings. The spa facilities, with a multitiered complex of mosaic-tile whirlpools and an atrium pool with water-aerobics classes, are exceptional.

Pros

  • Location
  • Variety of room options, including new Ruby Rooms
  • Spa

This three-floor boutique hotel near the Heavenly Gondola, Stateline casinos, and several good restaurants provides solid value in a hip yet family-friendly setting. The Great Indoors rooms have tented beds, a faux fire log, and glowing stars on the ceiling if you want to play at camping; the Explorers Club offers four bunk beds to sleep a group of eight. All have free Wi-Fi, iPod docks, and flat-screen TVs with cable. The public areas include a lobby with leather sofas and a fireplace; outdoors are firepits, a beer garden, and rooftop hot tub.

Bay Harbor & Coconut Bay Resort

$ | 97702 Overseas Hwy., FL, 33037, USA

Some 200 feet of waterfront is the main attraction at these side-by-side sister properties that offer a choice between smaller rooms and larger freestanding cottages. Coconut palms whisper in the breeze and gumbo-limbo trees shade the 2½-acre grounds. Nice features abound, like well-placed lounge chairs for gazing out over the water and kayaks and paddleboats (for when you want to get closer). Everybody shows up on the sun deck or the 16-foot dock to watch the sun slip into Davy Jones's locker. The rooms are a bit tight but not without island character. Pale-yellow cottages are simply furnished. Ask for Units 25 and 26, a two-bedroom villa that will give you extra space and a water view.

Pros

  • Temperature-controlled pool
  • Owner Peg's amazing homemade scones
  • Free use of kayaks, paddleboats, and paddleboards

Cons

  • A bit dated
  • Small sea-walled sand beach

BaySide Inn

$ | 618 Water St., Saugatuck, MI, 49453, USA

At this relaxing bed and breakfast, a lovely patio overlooks the Saugatuck harbor that winds its way to Lake Michigan. Gracious hosts Kathy and Frank Wilson purchased the once-dilapidated 1827 boathouse in 1990 and transformed it, adding a second floor for additional space. Choose a room with a view of the harbor or head out to the year-round, outdoor jetted tub to watch the yachts motor back and forth. Couples lounging by the common-room fireplace and families barbecuing on the charcoal grills set a low-key atmosphere. Feel free to get a pass to pop over to the pool at the owners' other property, the Beachway Resort & Hotel.

Benjamin Ellis House

$ | 215 Pollock St., New Bern, NC, 28560, USA

This 1850 Greek revival inn lodged Yankee soldiers during the Civil War and today it's home to eight rooms—all with bathroom and flooring remodels in 2022—outfitted with antiques but light on clutter. The licensed commercial kitchen produces terrific breakfasts and private dinners and serves as a comfortable setting for occasional cooking classes.  This historic 8,000-square-foot home has a curious past—at one point, two brothers sawed the house in half to install a large Queen Anne staircase, making the house 9 feet wider and creating a neat double hallway upstairs, adding to the communal space.
