Big Horn Resort, Ascend Hotel Collection

Big Pine Key Resort

$ | 33000 Overseas Hwy., FL, 33043, USA

There's a congenial atmosphere at this lively, family-owned lodge-campground-marina—a happy mix of tent campers (who have the fabulous waterfront real estate), RVers (who look pretty permanent), and motel dwellers who like to mingle at the rooftop pool and play poker. Rooms have tile floors, wicker furniture, and doors that allow sea breezes to waft through. A skywalk joins the upper-story rooms with the pool and deck. Campsites range from rustic to full hookups. Everything is spotless—even the campground's bathhouse—and the service is good-natured and efficient. Satellite wireless means you can pick up a signal most places on the property, depending on the weather. The staff will book you a room, sell you bait, or hook you up with a fishing charter. There are plenty of family-oriented activities, so the youngsters will never complain about being bored. Discounts are available for week-long or longer stays.

Pros

  • Local fishing crowd
  • Nice pool
  • Great price

Cons

Black Range Lodge

$ | 119 Main St. (NM 152), Kingston, NM, 88042, USA

This getaway in the old mining ghost town of Kingston, along the Geronimo Trail Scenic Byway (NM 152), has sturdy log-beam ceilings, massive stone walls, an interesting history, and an informal, rustic atmosphere that makes it nice for families, but the charm here owes a lot to the care and tending, and presence, of the proprietors. It's not quite enough to describe this lodge as "historic." The "town" of Kingston—a bustling boomtown established around the turn of the 20th century and with a current population of about 30—and the surrounding area are fun to explore and fantastic by mountain bike, but keep in mind that Silver City is a full hour's drive west. Guests have access to Percha Creek and miles of hiking trails. The rooms on the north side of the main lodge have views of the mountains, and the south rooms look into the lovely greenhouse. One-bedroom suites have cozy, vine-wrapped balconies in addition to sitting areas. Breakfasts are healthy and hearty, and the kitchen is open for you to cook in if you bring your own food. There is also a studio apartment and a six-bedroom house.

Pros

  • Great for a group retreat or family reunion
  • In a genuine near-ghost town
  • Some rooms have fantastic views

Cons

  • No restaurants for miles
  • Silver City is about an hour away
  • Only breakfast is prepared for guests

Bluebird Sunapee

A formerly nondescript budget hotel less than a half-mile from the slopes of Mount Sunapee ski area and the sands of Lake Sunapee State Beach has been artfully transformed into a rustic-chic boutique inn with urbane flair but reasonable rates. Rooms have two-tone beadboard walls, wood floors, and tasteful linens, and antique skis decorate the walls of the indoor heated saltwater pool. Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa

Floor-to-ceiling windows and oh-so-tasteful furnishings grace the Borgota's spacious standard rooms, where even the shower has room for two and the recently renovated MGM Tower is as close to Vegas as one can get on the East Coast (it even has a signature scent wafting through the common areas). Boro Hotel

$ | 38--28 27th St., Queens, NY, 11101, USA

This industrial-chic property just two subway stops from Manhattan has spacious rooms, balconies with skyline views, and downright huge bathrooms. What's more, the high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows are features not commonly found in Manhattan, especially at such a reasonable price. Catching the sunset behind the Manhattan cityscape—from the rooftop lounge or privacy of your room—is a real highlight. The lobby lounge has a fireplace and shelves stocked with books from the Strand. The all-day restaurant, Beebe's, serves new American dishes and thin-crust pizzas. While Long Island City is rapidly changing, Its location does feel a bit isolated.

Pros

Boulder Station Hotel & Casino

$ | 4111 Boulder Hwy., Las Vegas, NV, 89121, USA

The story of how Station Casinos came to dominate the Las Vegas \"locals casino\" scene—and divide that dominance into regions—is exemplified by Boulder Station. It opened in early 1994, cementing what's now the Stations formula with its attached Regal movie theater, Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant, and The Broiler steak house for living-it-up occasions. The latest additions are Game On, which fuses a sports bar with the 24-hour coffee shop, and a six-outlet food court (replacing a buffet that never reopened after the pandemic). The unintended consequence of Station's corporate success is that Boulder Station is now extremely local, serving primarily the east side, and offering no real reason to cross town for those living closer to other Station properties. Some of the 299 rooms and suites have distant views of the Strip and downtown, and midweek room rates can dip well below $100.

Pros

  • Solid values throughout
  • Attached movie theater
  • Plenty of free parking

Cons

  • Restaurants duplicated at other Station properties
