THE BEST HOTEL IN USA

Yowie

$ | 226 South St., Philadelphia, PA, 19147, USA
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

In a corner property on South Street, what started as a shop selling cutting-edge home goods and clothing now includes a 13-room hotel and a café. The brain-child of Philadelphia local Shannon Maldonado, the hotel relies on invisible service, meaning there are no on-site staff, and there are thoughtful touches like curated recommendation cards in every room and a mini bar that leans heavily on local products. The real draw here is the location, which puts you in the center of one of Philadelphia's most charming neighborhoods.

Pros

  • Modern design
  • Excellent location
  • On-site cafe

Cons

  • No concierge or on-site staff
  • No on-site parking
  • Can be loud at night

THE BEST HOTEL IN USA

Rosewood Sand Hill

$$$$ | 2825 Sand Hill Rd., Menlo Park, CA, 94025, USA

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Synonymous with the relentless pursuit of exquisite luxury and exorbitant prices, few hotels in Northern California can match the gravitas and sheer delight of this gem near the northeastern base of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Everything is truly wonderful, from the dining options to the best-in-class spa. It easily has the Peninsula’s greatest hotel swimming pool (outdoor and saltwater), too. With all the glitzy amenities, the rooms are surprisingly understated with comfortable furnishings that are often influenced by the hotel's natural surroundings. Bathrooms include both rain showers and marble bathtubs. By virtue of being in the heart of Sand Hill Road’s venture capitalist office zone, the general hotel area can feel like a millionaire’s playground. This often is the Bay Area’s most expensive hotel, but if you can afford a splurge, it really is quite the special place.

Pros

  • Terrific upscale California cuisine at Madera restaurant
  • Enormous, well-appointed rooms that all have balconies or terraces
  • Beautiful grounds and views

Cons

  • Hard to rationalize the price tag
  • The location is an office park at a highway exit
  • Rooms don't always block out exterior noise

21c Museum Hotel

$$$$ | 609 Walnut St., Cincinnati, OH, 45202, USA Fodor's Choice
21c Museum Hotel, Cincinnati
GLINTstudios courtesy of 21c Museum Hotels

A historic downtown landmark apartment building returned to its roots with the late-2012 opening of this, the country's second 21c Museum Hotel, a hotel dedicated to engaging the public with contemporary art and cultural programs. Built in 1912 and designed by the noted firm Joseph G. Steinkamp & Brother, whose other Cincinnati works included the Art Deco American Building, the former luxurious Metropole Hotel was a city mainstay famous for its two-story curved staircase and ornate ballroom. In 1971, however, the structure was converted into low-income residential units, then proceeded to languish unattended—until earning a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. Following years of renovations, the place has reemerged as the 21c. Now, along with revitalized original elements like the mosaic tiled elevator floors and that signature staircase, you'll find 8,000 square-feet of gallery and installation space showcasing the work of living artists (the rotating exhibits are open to the public for free, 24-hours a day; calendars are available online). Rooms all feature modern design, original artwork, and amenities like Nespresso machines, iPod docks, Malin + Goetz products, and free Wi-Fi. The three-room, on-site spa offers signature ReVive facials and a whirlpool in the couple's suite, while Chef Michael Paley's Metropole restaurant—a local favorite—takes things back to the hearth with a focus on local and sustainable ingredients cooked in a custom-built, wood-burning fireplace. Craft beers, bourbon, and more are served there and on the seasonal Cocktail Terrace, backed by panoramic views of the surrounding Backstage District.

Pros

  • Unique design
  • Free art exhibits
  • Noted restaurant
  • Free Wi-Fi

Cons

  • May be too "techy" for some

21C Museum Hotel

21C Museum Hotel, Louisville
Photo by Kenneth Hayden courtesy of 21c Museum Hotel

Four-foot tall red plastic penguins line the roof of this boutique hotel and modern art museum like friendly sentries. When it opened in 2006, 21C immediately attracted national acclaim for its elegant restoration of a 19th-century building, attention to service, and cutting-edge art collection. Guests mingle with gallery visitors and locals who are dining in the hotel's award-winning restaurant, Proof on Main. All of the designer-decorated rooms are spacious, but the best have private patios overlooking the city, where—on a sunny Kentucky morning—you can enjoy room-service breakfast while wearing a plush hotel bathrobe. At the end of the day, soak in the large bathtub while sipping bourbon from the silver julep cup provided in each room.

Pros

  • Fascinating contemporary art
  • Excellent service

Ace Hotel New York

$ | 20 W. 29th St., New York, NY, 10001, USA Fodor's Choice
The Ace Hotel, Flatiron District
DOUGLAS LYLE THOMPSON/The Ace Hotel

The Ace is not your ordinary boutique hotel; the lively lobby melds the look of an Ivy League library with the concept of a curiosity cabinet—eclectic artwork, mosaic tile floors, wooden bookcases, antique sofas, a photo booth—and the vibe is laid-back, making it a popular hangout for freelancers and creatives. The rooms run from \"Small,\" \"Large,\" \"Medium Queen,\" \"Medium King,\" and \"Bunk\" (traditional bunk bed, sleeps 2) to \"Loft Suite,\" indicative of the hotel's inclusive high/low ethos. No two rooms are alike, with original artwork and curated furnishings like turntables, Gibson guitars, and exclusive Pendleton wool blankets. The Lobby bar has good food and quality drinks though there are plenty of great restaurants and bars in the neighborhood. A Stumptown coffee bar on-site will keep you caffeinated.

Pros

  • Fun, unique decor
  • Supercool but friendly vibe
  • Lobby bar scene

Cons

  • Small rooms
  • Caters to a young crowd

This National Historic Landmark is constructed of sugar-pine logs and features Native American design motifs; public spaces are enlivened with art deco flourishes, Persian rugs, and elaborate iron- and woodwork. The lounge, with its tiered ceiling, has big, comfortable chairs and a quiet, contemplative air. Even if you cannot afford to stay here, take the time to stroll about the public spaces and have a drink on the patio shortly before sunset, when the view of Glacier Point is spectacular.

This posh boutique hotel, stomping ground of Florida's well-heeled, is full of historic touches and creature comforts—from its yellow facade with dramatic white-draped entry to modern draws like the renowned spa and Daniel Boulud restaurant. The lobby, with soaring cypress ceilings, underscores The Brazilian Court's Roaring '20s origins. Although not directly on the beach, car service and access to an oceanfront facility allow guests to enjoy plenty of beachside fun in the sun. All the studio and one- and two-bedroom suites have rich limestone baths and showers, wine refrigerators, and personal butler service; bay windows look out into the impeccably maintained gardens and enchanting flower-filled courtyards. The rooms all recently underwent a redesign that includes lush green velvet headboards and sofas that add a bold nod to the palms just outside, while white linens and pops of lavender brighten the space. Each room features a curated collection of black and white photography by renowned photographer Terry O’Neill, that pays homage to some of the most inspiring icons of pop culture. "Inner geek-meets-chic" is the self-proclaimed—and apt—description of this cozy and quirky University-area hotel in Minneapolis whose warm, inviting vibe, starts at the fire pit in the driveway (where guests can roast s'mores) and continues to complimentary apple cider in the lobby. A roster of unique activities and events—from Book Butlers and Sudoku "sleep-ins" to mixology lessons, Words with Friends Wine Hours, and Retro Bar Bingo—are what help make the "Commons" name refer more to "communal" than "typical." Other social draws include the Beacon Public House gastro-pub, serving regional cuisine and creative cocktails, and a refurbished fitness center. Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel

The historic, party-centric Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, known for hosting the first Academy Awards ceremony, has played host to some of the movie industry's most important people and events, but, it's also approachable enough for regular folks looking to experience Los Angeles. Though its rooms were recently renovated to keep them fresh, they still boast hints of the Old Hollywood era, keeping it connected to its roots. Meanwhile, the lobby's original Spanish Colonial Revival details that evoke early Hollywood glamour, including the Spanish tiles, painted ceilings, arches, and fountains, remain and are beautifully preserved. Stay in a poolside cabana room if you want to stay close to the heated, David Hockney--painted pool, or get a room at the tower if you want to be away from the poolside parties. Modern amenities include a flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi and a minibar, though on-site restaurants Shirley Brasserie and 25 Degrees will keep you well fed. Seeking nightlife? This Spanish Mission–style icon has been a discreet hillside retreat for celebrities and society types since 1946 and was given a face-lift by star designers Alexandra Champalimaud and David Rockwell. The posh spa lures high-society types, as do the beloved oval pool and famously scenic Swan Lake outside. The on-site restaurant serves a stellar breakfast and is also suitable for a romantic date night.

Blessed with the double threat of sumptuous historic architecture and an enviable location on the Mag Mile, it's no shocker that this hotel has been going strong for around a century. There's so much to love, from the contemporary air of the guest rooms to the enormous swimming pool and well-stocked fitness center. The Shriner greeting "Es Salamu Aleikum" ("Peace Be to God") is etched on foyer columns, a reminder that it was once the Medinah Men's Athletic Club. In-house destinations include the popular Michael Jordan's Steakhouse and Casa Chi, a Nikkei (Japanese-Peruvian fusion) concept by chef Richard Sandoval.

Pros

  • Historic feel
  • Jaw-dropping pool
  • View of the Magnificent Mile

Cons

  • Some noise problems
  • Enormity of the property can be overwhelming

The Jefferson

The Jefferson, Downtown
Sterling Elmendorf

Every inch of this 1923, Beaux-Arts landmark exudes refined elegance, from the intimate seating areas that take the place of a traditional check-in counter to the delicate blooms and glass atrium at the entryway to The Greenhouse, the fine-dining restaurant. After top hat–clad doormen usher you into the exquisite marble lobby, you'll settle into stylish guest rooms with beautiful art, plush linens, Italian marble walk-in showers, and televisions recessed into the bathroom mirrors. Rooms, which aim to reflect the hotel namesake's time in Paris, as well as his Monticello residence, also feature things that even the inventor Jefferson couldn't have imagined, like free Wi-Fi and "smart technology" to trigger housekeeping. This stunning hotel is also dog-friendly, and charges no deposit for furry friends, who are welcome in all shapes and sizes.

  • Exquisite historic hotel in a great location
  • Impeccable service
  • Quill is about the best hotel bar in the city

Few places in town can rival the Liberty Hotel's soaring lobby, ringed by several layers of revamped metal catwalks and populated by couches, tables, and armchairs where you can sit with a cocktail or a coffee and commiserate. This luxury hotel is literally the former Charles Street Jail, and the decor, amenities, and restaurants play up this historic past (there may even be a ghost or two). Rooms, either in the original granite building or an adjacent 16-story modern tower, feature comfortable beds, deep brown leather lounge chairs, and incredible views of the Charles River and Boston skyline. Two on-site restaurants, Scampo and Clink, as well as three bars, Alibi, the Liberty Bar, and the Catwalk, mean lots of imbibing options.
