The name of this Hyatt brand means "personal style" in Hindi, and the serene and spacious modern rooms evoke that coveted New York loft feel, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking 5th Avenue and the New York Public Library. Ideal for travelers seeking design pizzazz, a see-and-be-seen atmosphere, and first-class amenities, this five-story downtown Napa property fuses New York City chic and Las Vegas glamour. Ultracontemporary rooms with Nespresso coffeemakers, wine refrigerators, and appropriate (and appropriately located) electronics docking stations come in several categories, from 285-square-foot Classic Kings to 780-square-foot Archer's Den suites with balconies and fireplaces. All rooms have beds draped in 100%-cotton linens and topped with down duvets and down pillows. There are also work desks, safes, and flat-screen TVs with premium channels. ARRIVE Wilmington

$$$$ | 101 S. 2nd St., Wilmington, NC, 28401, USA Fodor's Choice

The ART Hotel

$$$ | 1201 Broadway, Denver, CO, 80203, USA Fodor's Choice

Each floor of rooms in this nine-story building is dedicated to a different artist, with original art in every room by the artist, as well—you can't miss the entry-level greeting Wall Drawing #397 by Sol LeWitt or the video art in the elevators that signal this is going to be a unique lodging experience. The eclectic rooms feature vividly colored pillows, furniture in fanciful yet quite comfortable shapes, and welcome touches such as white marble bathrooms, espresso machines, expandable workstations, and very soft bathrobes. The hotel sits next to the Denver Art Museum—the museum’s curator of 30 years was also responsible for assembling the $100 million in pieces at ART, almost all of which can be viewed simply by asking a staff member to escort you—and is within walking distance of many other art museums as well as across the street from the History Colorado Center. Let's not forget the incredible views from the upper-floor rooms and the restaurant and lounge. The window-surrounded, fourth-floor restaurant, Fire, serves modern American cuisine and offers an art-heavy, stylish, and inviting atmosphere, with the one-story-high, Mylar-based Light Knots by Larry Bell as its centerpiece. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls between the lobby and outdoor lounge area operate like sliding doors and are left open on temperate evenings, and the firepit, also a work of art, surrounds comfortable seating that leads to private, covered seating elsewhere on the patio overlooking Broadway.

Pros

  • Compelling art collection
  • Comfortable, stylish rooms
  • Incredible views from upper floors

Cons

  • Check-in can be confusing
  • Restaurant food and service uneven
  • Conventions sometimes overcrowd the hotel

Ashland Hills Hotel & Suites

$$ | 2525 Ashland St., OR, 97520, USA Fodor's Choice

Hoteliers Doug and Becky Neuman (who also run the excellent Ashland Springs Hotel and Lithia Springs Resort) have transformed this '70s-era resort into a stylish yet affordable retro-cool compound, retaining the property's fabulous globe lights, soaring lobby windows, and beam ceilings while adding many period-style furnishings. Standard rooms and spacious suites are set in two separate buildings, and its 14 acres include two tennis courts, a pool, a hot tub, fitness rooms, and a restaurant, Luna Cafe, that turns out reasonably priced, farm-to-table pizzas, sandwiches, and other light fare (there's also a market selling gourmet picnic supplies and local beer and wine). The Asticou Hotel

$$$$ | 15 Peabody Rd., Northeast Harbor, ME, 04662, USA Fodor's Choice

Dramatically perched above serene Northeast Harbor, this vestige of the Gilded Age has played host to the likes of Astors, Vanderbilts, and Rockefellers since it was built in 1883. Destroyed by fire in 1899, the original inn was rebuilt in 1901, and a $28 million makeover, completed in the summer of 2025, not only restored the property to its former historic elegance, some might say it arguably surpassed it. The rooms, 17 spa suites, and 15 cottages are designed to mimic the surrounding coast and woods, in hues both deep and light, from bark and moss to pale pinks. The restaurant, Dahlia’s, has a dedicated following. As for the spectacular gardens that spill around the grounds and pool—filled with statues, lush hydrangeas, and pollinators galore—they're reason enough to warrant a stay.

The Betsy

$$$ | 1440 Ocean Dr., FL, 33139, USA Fodor's Choice

After a massive expansion, the original Betsy Ross Hotel (christened the "Colonial" wing) has been joined with what was the neighboring, historic Carlton Hotel to create a retro-chic, art deco treasure that delivers the full-throttle South Beach experience with style, pizzazz, and a big-time cultural bonus: year-round programs include poetry readings, live jazz, and art shows. The front porch and outdoor eating space along Ocean Drive are perfect for quintessential SoBe people-watching. The lobby, which remains in the original Colonial wing, is busy, but not insanely so, and cultivates a social, trendy scene, especially in the evenings. The guest rooms of The Betsy 2.0 embody a color palette of white and ocean-blue tones with pops of green. Enjoy time at the rooftop pool deck, and consider dining at the hotel's excellent surf-and-turf restaurant by chef Laurent Tourondel, LT Steak & Seafood.

Pros

  • Unbeatable location
  • Super-fashionable
  • Great beach club

Cons

  • Confusing hotel layout
  • Great pet-friendly program but fee attached

Blackstone Hotsprings Lodging & Baths

$ | 410 Austin St., Truth or Consequences, NM, 87901, USA Fodor's Choice

Unassuming from the outside, Blackstone has such a creative personality that visitors need simply turn the corner into the colorful midcentury-style courtyard—which echoes Blackstone's origins at a 1930s motor court—to be won over. With just the right dose of quirkiness, the very well-appointed accommodations reveal the owners' good humor: a tasteful assortment of Jetsons, Lucille Ball, and Twilight Zone memorabilia adorn the themed rooms. Each has its own private soaking tub for unlimited indulgence in the healing waters, and a kitchenette (no stove). The lush wet room ($25 per hour)—with plants, waterfalls, a shower, and hot pool—transports you somewhere far away from this desert locale. Two huge private tubs are available for $5 per half hour. The in-house coffee is a custom blend and it's fantastic. The staff is helpful and can offer savvy tips on local dining and sightseeing.

  • Irresistible blend of handcrafted design and pure luxury
  • A truly relaxing getaway

Blue Swallow Motel

$ | 815 E. Rte. 66, Tucumcari, NM, 88401, USA Fodor's Choice

Here it is: the retro motor court of your dreams. Built in 1939, the glowing neon, the tidy grounds, the spotlessly clean rooms furnished with vintage and antique furniture, and the abundant charm of Bill and Terri, the proprietors, all come together in one neat, feel-good package. The Blue Swallow is a landmark and a genuine pleasure for an overnight. The rooms are not the supersize, supermodern ones you get at the chains down the road, but that just isn't what this place is all about. Arrive before sunset if you can and take a seat at a table on the front lawn; the views of the Western sky exploding with color are not to be missed. There is a feeling of camaraderie among the guests here—many of whom are diligently following Route 66 in its entirety—that lends a real sweetness to an already unique experience.

Pros

  • One of the best-preserved motels on all of Route 66
  • Free coffee and breakfast snacks
  • Some rooms have attached garages for your car

Cons

  • No pool or hot tub
  • Check-in closes at 9 pm
  • Pets not allowed
