Desolation Hotel Lake Tahoe

$$$ | 933 Poplar St., South Lake Tahoe, CA, 96150, USA Fodor's Choice

Hoteliers who revere nature and luxury in equal proportions conceived this gaspworthy, glass-walled, world-unto-itself "micro-resort" that debuted in 2022 a few-minutes' walk to a private-access beach and an even shorter one to Stateline's casinos. Gray and light brown furnishings accented with shades of blue and green predominate in the studios, suites, and town houses, all meant to deliver the casual grandeur of Tahoe vacation homes minus the mortgage and maintenance costs. All accommodations have patios or balconies, well-equipped kitchenettes, and sleep at least four. Amenities include a saltwater pool, hot tub, sauna, cold-shower plunge, fitness center, and Maggie's restaurant for refined cuisine befitting the upscale setting.

Pros

  • Refined cuisine at Maggie's restaurant
  • Convenient to Heavenly Village and outdoor activities
  • Studios and town houses with kitchenettes and patios or balconies accommodate four people

Cons

  • Restaurant on pricey side
  • High weekend rates
  • Must park on street when on-site lot is full

The Don CeSar

$$$ | 3400 Gulf Blvd., FL, 33706, USA Fodor's Choice

The Pink Palace, as it's called thanks to its paint job, is a storied resort and Gulf Coast architectural landmark, with exterior and public areas exuding turn-of-the-20th-century elegance. Ditto for the rooms. The staff is known for friendly old-world service. The Don once was a favorite of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Babe Ruth, and Clarence Darrow. Maritana Grille is the hotel's deservedly popular restaurant, which specializes in Florida seafood and is lined with huge fish tanks. Ghost hunters may be interested in knowing that Thomas Rowe, who built this Roaring '20s–era hotel, is said to have come back after death to meet his beloved; some guests and staff swear they see the couple occasionally having a rendezvous in the garden (more romantic than spooky); others say Rowe appears in corridors and rooms.

Pros

  • Romantic destination
  • Great beach with cabanas and paddleboards available
  • Tasty dining options, namely popular Maritana

Cons

  • Small rooms
  • Can be quite pricey
  • $38 daily resort fee adds to already-hefty tab

The Gastonian

$$$ | 220 E. Gaston St., Savannah, GA, 31401, USA Fodor's Choice

Guest rooms—many of which are exceptionally spacious—in this atmospheric Italianate inn dating from 1868 all have fireplaces and are decorated with a mix of funky finds and antiques from the Georgian and Regency periods. In a second building, identical to the main house, the Lafayette Room has the most noteworthy fireplace; the Caracalla Suite is named for the oversize whirlpool tub built in front of its fireplace; the Juliette Low room has a private wrought-iron balcony looking out on the treetops. The handsome and quiet Eli Whitney room is one of the least expensive. Fresh flowers throughout and the outdoor covered arbor are unexpected pleasures. Afternoon tea, complimentary wine with cheese and hors d'oeuvres, and evening desserts and cordials are among the treats. At breakfast you can order such hot entrées as omelets with creamed spinach and goat cheese.

Pros

  • Cordial and caring staff
  • Hot breakfast is hard to beat
  • Afternoon tea and wine and cheese at night

Cons

  • Accommodations on the third floor are a climb

Geiser Grand Hotel

$$$ | 1996 Main St., Baker City, OR, 97814, USA Fodor's Choice

Built in 1889, the stately Geiser Grand sits like the dowager duchess of Main Street, her cupola clock tower cutting a sharp figure against a wide Baker City sky—the Italianate Renaissance Revival beauty was once known as the finest hotel between Portland and Salt Lake City, though today it's showing its age. That said, the rooms still have those 14-foot ceilings, old-fashioned transoms above the door, and 10-foot-tall windows. But of all the fascinating features, it's the custom-built stained-glass ceiling in hues of green, blue, purple, and red that takes center stage. The fact that it was created from photographs and an old timer's memory makes it even more astounding. There's a lively saloon and a restaurant serving decent (if predictable) traditional American fare.

Pros

  • Great downtown location
  • Fascinating history
  • Two on-site restaurants

Cons

  • Rooms are decidedly old-fashioned and not to everyone's taste
  • Some believe the hotel is haunted
  • Many rooms lack views

Grande Colonial

$$$ | 910 Prospect St., San Diego, CA, 92037, USA Fodor's Choice

This white-wedding-cake-style hotel in the heart of La Jolla Village has ocean views and charming European details that include chandeliers, mahogany railings, a wooden elevator, crystal doorknobs, and French doors. The hotel was built in 1913 and expanded and redesigned in the mid-1920s; newer additions feature larger suites, all with full kitchens and fireplaces and stocked with luxury bath products and snack baskets. Without compromising the integrity of the past, rooms have been modernized in a tasteful palette of royal blue and muted yellow; request a corner room with large windows framing the ocean. Although most guests request the historic main building, all five areas of the property pay tribute to the swanky 1920s Beverly Hills vibe. Cruise La Jolla in the hotel's courtesy golf cart, or stroll the hallways lined with black-and-white portraits of La Jolla's past. The hotel's restaurant, Nine-Ten, run by chef Jason Knibb, is well-liked by locals for its fresh, seasonal California cuisine. A daily $45 resort fee includes hospitality extras like valet parking, in-room snacks, use of bicycles, a Chromebook, access to a neighboring fitness center, beach gear, local transportation, and complementary coffee-to-go.

Pros

  • The village's only four-diamond hotel
  • Superb restaurant
  • Hospitality extras included in rate

Cons

  • Small pool
  • No fitness center
  • Valet parking only

The Graylyn Estate

$$$ | 1900 Reynolda Rd., Winston-Salem, NC, 27106, USA Fodor's Choice

The former estate of RJ Reynolds executive Bowman Gray and his wife, Nathalie, is now a luxurious inn 2 miles north of downtown, near the Wake Forest campus. The expansive yet welcoming stone building includes many architectural wonders, such as the elaborate ironwork and intricate wood panels imported from Europe during the Roaring Twenties. Most rooms are spacious, stocked with every amenity (as well as a communal ice-cream refrigerator), and well soundproofed. Antique furnishings—in private rooms and the billiards room, butler's quarters, and the library—give the feel of abiding within a living museum. It's like staying in a real-life game of Clue, with all of the luxury and none of the murder mystery.

Pros

  • 55 acres of gorgeous green space to roam
  • Free ice cream (Mr. Gray's favorite) and cookies
  • Exceptional hospitality from butlers and front-desk staff

Cons

  • Not directly in downtown Winston-Salem
  • Conference groups sometimes fill the property
  • Fitness center within the main inn has only two machines

Green Gables Inn

$$$ | 301 Ocean View Blvd., Pacific Grove, CA, 93950, USA Fodor's Choice

Stained-glass windows, ornate interior details, and sophisticated modern amenities (the inn completed a top-to-bottom remodel in early 2023) compete with spectacular ocean views at this Queen Anne–style mansion. Rooms in a carriage house perched on a hill out back are larger and afford more privacy.

Pros

  • Exceptional views
  • Impeccable attention to historic detail
  • Afternoon wine and cheese served in the parlor

Cons

  • Some rooms are small
  • Thin walls
  • Breakfast room can be crowded
