Kennicott Glacier Lodge

$$$ | 15 Kennicott Millsite, USA Fodor's Choice

At the top of the 10-mile gravel road from McCarthy is an astounding site: a red-and-white lodge with manicured lawns set amid the aged and worn Kennecott Mine and a receding glacier—all with a backdrop of snow-crested peaks. Shuttle service to and from McCarthy and three daily meals are included in the rates at this modern timber lodge, whose small rooms are adorned with artifacts and photos from the mining era. Fresh-baked goods are favorites at the buffet breakfast. You can request a snack lunch to take with you or opt for a sit-down meal, best enjoyed out on the deck overlooking the glacial moraine. Dinner is a "wilderness gourmet" spread that's served family-style. The front desk can arrange glacier trekking, flightseeing, rafting, and alpine hiking for additional fees.

Pros

  • Lots of character and delicious food
  • Shuttle service to/from McCarthy
  • Outdoor activities can be arranged for a fee

Cons

  • Some rooms have shared bath
  • No air-conditioning
  • Family-style dinner not for everyone

Kenwood Inn & Spa

$$$ | 10400 Sonoma Hwy./Hwy. 12, Kenwood, CA, 95452, USA Fodor's Choice

Fluffy feather beds, custom Italian furnishings, and French doors in most cases opening onto terraces or balconies lend this inn's uncommonly spacious guest rooms a romantic air—more than a few guests are celebrating honeymoons or anniversaries. All the rooms have separate entrances, espresso makers, and refrigerators. Each of several room types has its appeal, from price to views to lavish layout. The inn has a few pet-friendly rooms (dogs only); it's wise to book one as far ahead as possible. With its mature fruit trees and buildings resembling a Mediterranean-style villa, the inn seems as though it's been here a century, but it was completed in 1990.

Pros

  • Large rooms
  • Lavish furnishings
  • Romantic setting

Cons

  • Far from nightlife
  • Expensive in high season
  • Geared more to couples than families with children

The Kimpton Cardinal Hotel

$$$ | 51 E. 4th St., Winston-Salem, NC, 27101, USA Fodor's Choice

To understand Winston-Salem in the 2020s, consider that the former RJ Reynolds headquarters—an Art Deco, tiered-top architectural masterpiece that inspired the design of the Empire State Building—is now a modern hotel where (of course) smoking is not allowed anywhere on the premises. Instead, the luxury hotel honors the history of Winston-Salem with tartan fabrics that echo the area’s textile past. Guest rooms exude elegance and masculinity, while the basement-level rec room is all fun, with touches like a two-story slide, bowling lanes, and a small basketball court. There's also a fabulous French brasserie on-site called the Katharine.

Pros

  • Architectural touches are stunning
  • Dogs are welcome and even get their own bed upon request
  • Fun amenities like bowling lanes

Cons

  • Rooms fill up quickly during special events at nearby Wake Forest University
  • Pet-friendly atmosphere doesn't work for everyone
  • No pool

Rooms start at the 18th floor of the hotel, so you'll have a sweeping view of the Miami skyline. In general, the hotel caters to business travelers and groups, but its association with the Kimpton brand ensures a steady intake of pleasure-seekers.

Kimpton Hotel Born

$$$ | 1600 Wewatta St., Denver, CO, 80202, USA Fodor's Choice

Just across from Union Station's train platform, the stylish and warmly welcoming Hotel Born is decorated with natural materials that evoke Colorado's alpine setting, from knotty-pine headboards and sumptuous leather upholstery to flannel-style fabrics and Western-themed art. The comfortable, woodsy rooms vary slightly decor-wise, with some featuring deep soaking tubs or counter-style desks, but all offer floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the Rocky Mountains, the skyline, or the train station. The shops and restaurants of Union Station and LoDo are within a block or two, but the on-site restaurant, Citizen Rail, is a lively spot decked out in exposed brickwork, gleaming metal, and dark woods that has become famous for its dry-aged steaks and creative wood-fired cuisine such as coal-simmered mussels and ember-roasted squash; sit at the chef's counter for a magnificent bit of culinary theater and be prepared for the same exceptional service offered in the hotel.

Celebrities and business travelers check into this hip property, which occupies the historic 1917 Railway Exchange Building and the 1937 art moderne Title Building, for the modern perks and art deco–meets–classic-French style. The service is similarly a cut above: room service is available around the clock; guests can use complimentary bicycles; yoga mats are placed in each room; and pets are welcome and pampered, down to delivered water bowls and access to a dog-walking service. Kona Tiki Hotel

$$$ | 75-5968 Alii Dr., Kailua-Kona, HI, 96745, USA Fodor's Choice

This small, oceanfront, walk-up hotel about a mile south of downtown Kailua Village, with modest, pleasantly decorated rooms on the ocean, is probably the best deal in town. Some might call it dated or old-fashioned, while others would say it imbues a cool vintage Hawaiiana charm. All rooms have fridges, but the lack of TVs is a proud tradition the hotel has maintained since the 1950s. Who needs TV when you have the ocean this close? A deposit is required, and you will need to book well in advance to secure a room.

Korakia Pensione

$$$ | 257 S. Patencio Rd., Palm Springs, CA, 92262, USA Fodor's Choice

This incredibly unique, Moroccan–Mediterranean mashup comprises Scottish painter Gordon Coutts' 1924 Tangier-inspired villa, a southern Europe–styled 1930s home once owned by silent film star J. Carol Naish, and a 1918 California adobe spread across 1½ acres on both sides of a quiet street a couple of blocks from downtown's main drag. Creative types and new bohemians are still drawn to the tranquil, sun-splashed grounds, which have generous day beds and turn sultry and dramatic at night with the flickering of hand-lit lanterns and fire bowls. In addition to full gourmet breakfasts served alfresco near the gurgling fountain, there's afternoon mint-tea service. No two rooms are the same, though most feature stone-heavy bathrooms, antique and hand-carved furniture, and plush bedding. Some have kitchenettes, outdoor showers, soaking tubs, or fireplaces. The resort fee is hefty at $60, but it funds lots of extras like poolside snacks, borrowable bikes, and welcome drinks. The spa is small and simple so opt for in-room chakra-balancing massages and vibrational scalp treatments.

Pros

  • Two pools that never close
  • Outdoor movie nights with popcorn
  • Sound baths and yoga on weekends

Cons

  • Woo-woo vibe won't appeal to business hotel loyalists
  • No TVs or phones in rooms
  • Limited parking

La Fonda on the Plaza

$$$ | 100 E. San Francisco St., Santa Fe, NM, 87501, USA Fodor's Choice

This venerable downtown landmark comes with modern amenities but still retains a warm, artful design—including whimsical painted headboards and handcrafted furniture that's faithful to the vision of Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, the vaunted architect responsible for the hotel's elegant Southwestern aesthetic. Though there has been an inn on this corner for centuries, the pueblo-inspired structure you see today was redesigned in 1922 by famed regional architect John Gaw Meem and has since been enlarged many times. Antiques and Native American art decorate the tiled lobby. Some suites have fireplaces; the rooftop suites are the most luxurious and include continental breakfast and private concierge services. A year-round heated pool and steam room are great for relaxing. La Plazuela Restaurant, with its hand-painted glass tiles, serves tasty, creative Southwestern food. Live bands rotate nightly in the snazzy La Fiesta Lounge, and the beloved Bell Tower Bar (open spring through fall) serves light food and offers commanding views of the mountains and Downtown. Don't forget to book a free docent tour of the property to truly appreciate its history and art collection.

La Posada Hotel

$$$ | 303 E. 2nd St., Winslow, AZ, 86047, USA Fodor's Choice

One of the great railroad hotels, La Posada ("resting place") exudes the charm of an 18th-century Spanish hacienda, and its restoration has been a labor of love. Architect Mary Jane Colter, famous for her work at the Grand Canyon, designed and decorated the 68,000-square-foot hotel. Individually finished rooms are restored to 1930s style (although some have been modernized and include whirlpool tubs) and named for the famous guests who stayed there. If you can't stay for the night, take a self-guided tour of the hotel and visit the restaurant. Although most things here are a trip back in time, the stately Turquoise Room---serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner---is decidedly modern. The spectacular menu stays true to original Chef John Sharpe's vision and incorporates traditional fine-dining fare with locally sourced foods of the Southwest. It's a unique culinary experience in this part of the state, well worth the trip from Flagstaff.

Pros

  • Historic charm
  • Unique architecture
  • Impressive restaurant

Cons

  • Mazes of staircases aren't wheelchair-friendly (but ground floor rooms and restaurant are)
  • An hour's drive from Flagstaff
