Rooms at this hotel on the quiet end of Duval—a 20-minute walk from downtown—are modern and sophisticated, and although the area around it gets some car and foot traffic, the property is far enough from the hubbub that you can relax but close enough that you can participate if you wish. Near the heart of downtown Moab, this historic inn is one of the most charming B&Bs in the region, with elegant rooms surrounded by lawns, gardens, and wondrous shade (a real treat in sunny Moab). Every morning, each guestroom receives a "breakfast basket" assembled just for them, with their choice from an array of home-baked pastries and other treats, to go along with the hot dish served in dining room. Thompson Nashville

$$$ | 401 11th Ave. S, Nashville, TN, USA Fodor's Choice

Award-winning for its architecture, this centrally located luxury boutique hotel is one of the best spots to stay in the city, as it affords guests the ability to explore, shop, and dine their way through the entire Gulch neighborhood on foot. A coffee shop (Killebrew Coffee) and an upscale seafood restaurant (Marsh House) are on the first floor, but the trendy rooftop bar known as the L.A. Jackson is where this hotel really shines.

Pros

  • Central Gulch location
  • In-room stereo
  • Great dining options

Cons

The Tides Inn

$$$ | 480 King Carter Dr., Irvington, VA, 22480, USA Fodor's Choice

Surrounded by manicured grounds overlooking Carter Creek, the Tides Inn, here since 1947, is sandwiched between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers. The resort offers all of the modern amenities travelers have come to expect, and features a wide variety of on-site recreational activities. Many of the rooms and suites, which are luxuriously decorated in a British Colonial style, have spectacular water views. The Golden Eagle Golf course is challenging; the par-3 course less so. Wildlife here is of note: ponds are well stocked with fish, and bird-watchers should take their binoculars. There's also a sailing school for all ages and experience levels; you can also jet ski on the Rappahannock River, or take in the Irvington scenery and wildlife on the Carter's Creek cruise.

Pros

  • Full-service resort
  • Golf, sailing lessons
  • Kids' activities

Cons

  • Expensive
