Bellasera Resort

$$$ | 221 9th St. S, Naples, FL, 34102, USA

This hotel is just far enough "off Fifth" to be away from the dining-and-shopping foot traffic but close enough for convenience, and it feels like a lovely Italian villa with its red-tile roofs and burnt-ocher stucco. The studios and suites, with earthy hues and marble flooring, huddle three stories high around a beautifully tiled pool, fountain, and courtyard. Cabanas line the pool on two sides, and The Claw Bar restaurant flows out onto a pretty trellis-covered patio on another. The studios have in-room whirlpool tubs with shutters opening onto the master bedroom, so you can watch TV from your bubble bath.

Pros

  • Spacious, full apartment units
  • Free bikes for guests
  • First-come-first-served private cabanas at pool

Cons

  • Must take shuttle to beach
  • On a busy highway (though surprisingly quiet)
  • Parking can be difficult

Bellwether House

$$$ | 211 E. Gaston St., Savannah, GA, 31401, USA

This rambling Italianate town house from the late 19th century is a standout for its ornate exterior, relaxing front porch, and comfortable ambience as a luxury accommodation in a B&B configuration. Once two separate houses, the oversize rooms boast high ceilings, luxury linens, handsome fireplaces, and sleek, modern furnishings, as well as claw-foot tubs or spacious double-showers. On one of the city's most beautiful streets, it's in a quiet residential area that offers a true slice of Savannah life.

Pros

  • Rooms are well-appointed and un-fussy
  • Included afternoon tea and evening "sabering" of a bottle of wine
  • Free parking in a private lot plus option for valet service

Cons

  • Lacks the privacy of a large property
  • Just off the beaten path allows for quiet at night but longer walks to central areas
  • Only one ADA room

Beltane Ranch

$$$ | 11775 Sonoma Hwy./Hwy. 12, Glen Ellen, CA, 95442, USA

On a slope of the Mayacamas range with gorgeous Sonoma Valley views, this working ranch, vineyard, winery, and lodging feels totally off the grid despite its location 2½ miles north of downtown Glen Ellen. From the decor and setting to the relaxed hospitality, nothing at the 105-acre property seems calculated or overly manicured. A stay at this spot owned by the same family for six generations provides a rare chance to experience the Wine Country lifestyle that predates the era of luxury inns and haute cuisine.

The Birchwood

$$$ | 340 Beach Dr. NE, St. Petersburg, FL, 33701, USA

Few things are as emblematic of Beach Drive's renaissance as this boutique hotel, which, like many of Downtown's best attractions, seamlessly blends old and new. The former apartment building's 1924 facade was lovingly restored by developer Chuck Prather, who also dramatically renovated its interior with eclectic decor and furnishings—guest bathrooms, for instance, have both European claw-foot bathtubs and modern, glass-door rain-head showers. Most rooms also have stately canopy beds, and some rooms overlook Beach Drive and Downtown's banyan-dotted waterfront parks. Everyone can enjoy fantastic views from Canopy, the überhip nightspot, and the ground-floor Birch & Vine restaurant has had local foodies buzzing since it opened.
