The Carolina Bed and Breakfast

$$$ | 309 N. Ewing St., Helena, MT, 59601, USA

This large B&B is a gem in Helena's historic district, offering guests such extra amenities as toiletries, complimentary beverages, luxury linens, and down pillows. Four of the rooms have fireplaces, and all of the rooms are beautifully decorated, bordering on ornate, yet not dated. And forget the omelettes for breakfast, though Chef Pat's specialties are his breakfast pastries that are so good you'll swear you're in Europe.

Pros

  • One of the rooms has a shower with a chair
  • The Corak room has a California king bed
  • Furniture and decor is better than most B&Bs

Cons

  • Although a crib is available, it's not really a kid-friendly place
  • The latest breakfast sitting is 9
  • The larger rooms are upstairs

Casa Marina, Curio Collection by Hilton

$$$ | 1500 Reynolds St., FL, 33040, USA

This luxurious property is on the largest private beach in Key West, and it has the same richly appointed lobby with beamed ceilings, polished pine floor, and original art as it did when it opened in 1920 on New Year's Eve. Guest rooms are stylishly decorated in neutral colors that evoke a certain comfortable crispness. Fluffy bathrobes, Nespresso machines, and luxurious designer toiletries make it feel like a boutique hotel. Two-bedroom loft suites with balconies face the ocean. Many of the main building's rooms open onto large outdoor living rooms, and the two pools (one adult, one family) have a view of the Atlantic. For the utmost in pampering, pay a visit to Spa al Mare. You can even enjoy a treatment right on the resort's beach (the only resort in Key West to offer this indulgence). Guests also have privileges at its nearby sister property, The Reach.

Cavallo Point

$$$ | 601 Murray Circle, Sausalito, CA, 94965, USA

With a striking setting almost at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, this refined, upscale destination is truly the closest countryside getaway to San Francisco. The lodge is rich with history, residing on what originally was Fort Baker, an Army base founded in the 1900s that continued to have military members on-site until the end of the 20th century. The rooms in the old Army buildings are decidedly swankier and green-focused than during their military days (most have fireplaces), while the separate contemporary rooms are downright posh with radiant heat floors and massive windows for viewing the bridge or nearby forest.

Pros

  • Activities like guided hikes and yoga classes
  • Excellent restaurant, bar, and spa
  • Can't beat the setting and urban proximity combination

Cons

  • Not as luxurious as some of its peers
  • Not really meant for families
  • Hard to get rideshares

The Celestine

$$$ | 727 Toulouse St., New Orleans, LA, 70130, USA

No two rooms are the same in this building, which inherited some inevitable quirkiness of a French Quarter townhouse (uneven floors, window units instead of central air) but exudes sophistication and elegance. For being so close to Bourbon Street, the whole property is surprisingly quiet, especially in the courtyard and back building, where Tennessee Williams once wrote much of A Streetcar Named Desire. Designer Sara Costello does justice to the building’s history (this was the home of Creole pharmacist Antoine Peychaud, and is named for his wife), incorporating paintings and photographs found on the property, antique furniture, and modern amenities. Rooms range from an apartment-size penthouse color-soaked in green, with daybeds and a breakfast nook, to a cozy galley room with brick walls. The on-site cocktail bar doesn’t get any better, and coffee and pastries are served in the Tennessee Williams wing.

Pros

  • By far the most stylish hotel in the neighborhood
  • Historic without sacrificing comfort
  • Excellent courtyard and bar

Cons

  • Too close to Bourbon Street for some
  • Lacks some amenities of a bigger hotel
  • No elevator

Chena Hot Springs Resort

$$$ | Chena Hot Springs Rd., Chena Hot Springs, AK, USA

Soaking in the hot springs of this one-of-a-kind, eco-friendly resort has long been a popular experience for tourists and locals, especially in winter, when a soak is often paired with overhead aurora sightings. Chena's waters are served up in hot tubs, an indoor swimming pool, and an outdoor natural-rock lake. In winter you can go dogsledding, skiing, snowmobiling on quite electric machines, and take a 4½-mile round-trip snow-coach tour to a heated hilltop yurt with 360-degree views. Summer activities include dog-cart rides, guided ATV tours, and horseback riding. Don't miss the charmingly unfinished ice museum, complete with an ice bar that serves appletinis from hand-carved ice glasses, ice bedrooms, and ice sculptures by world-class carvers. In addition to the multiple lodge buildings, the resort offers camping sites and accommodations inside yurts. Eventual plans call for the introduction of overnight stays in repurposed Alaska Railroad train cars.

Conrad Los Angeles

$$$ | 100 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles, CA, 90012, USA

The Conrad is Hilton's top-of-the-line hotel brand, and the DTLA iteration, designed by Frank Gehry and packed with priceless art and meticulous design, exudes top-of-the-line and luxury in every way. Adding to the impressive names is world-famous chef José Andrés who is at the forefront of both Spanish-forward restaurants on the property. Rooms are immaculate with floor-to-ceiling windows that show off L.A.'s impressive skyline along with a front row seat to the Walt Disney Concert Hall and The Broad art museum across the street. Adding to the hits here is the 10th floor pool (which is always warm), the very modern-equipped spa, and a pet friendly policy.
