Disney's Port Orleans Resort–French Quarter

$$$ | 2201 Orleans Dr., Walt Disney World, FL, 32830, USA

Cobblestone streets, gas lamps, wrought-iron balconies, and fragrant magnolia blossoms create a Disneyfied (i.e., clean) version of the French Quarter at this property. Kids can spend hours in the elaborate pool area with its sea serpent waterslide; other activities include nightly campfires as well as pirate cruises and horse-drawn carriage rides (each for an added fee). Although a Mardi Gras–theme food court and a Southern-style jazz and cocktail bar can keep you occupied in the evening, do make use of the free shuttles and water taxis that travel to other Disney resorts and Disney Springs, located a few miles away. Genteel rooms have dark wood furnishings, free Wi-Fi, TVs, and coffeemakers.

Pros

  • Authentic—or as authentic as Disney can make it—fun, New Orleans style
  • Moderate price
  • Lots of recreation options, including elaborate pool, boat rentals, and carriage rides

Cons

  • Even though there are fewer kids here, public areas can still be noisy
  • Shuttle service is slow
  • Food court is the only on-site dining option

Disney's Vero Beach Resort

$$$ | 9250 Island Grove Terr., Vero Beach, FL, 32963, USA

An oceanfront, family-oriented retreat tucked away in a residential stretch of Orchid Island, this Disney property has a retro Old Florida design with understated Mickey Mouse flair; plus, it's an easy drive to Walt Disney World in Orlando (just about 90 minutes). It's part of Disney's time-share program but also rents available rooms just like any other hotel.

The artfully conceived four-story main building, separate villas, and six beach cottages are reminiscent of 19th-century Florida, and you will find hidden treasurers related to sea turtles and Florida's rich history. All rooms come equipped with wet bars, mini-refrigerators, toasters, and microwaves; upgraded rooms offer full kitchens and laundry facilities. Although there are not too many dining options in the immediate area, the resort has some great eateries of its own: Shutters serves American food and has character breakfasts on Saturday morning, and Sonya's has wood-fired steaks and creative seafood. The highest rates here are in the summer, so spring, fall, and winter (except for two weeks in March) are perfect times to find deals.

Pros

  • A great pool with waterslide and kiddie splash pool
  • Campfire circle
  • Several dining options on property

Cons

  • Far from shopping and dining options
  • Minimal Disney-theme decor
  • Disney prices

Eben House

$$$ | 90 Bradford St., Provincetown, MA, 02657, USA
A rigorous interior renovation in 2015 on this 1776 property—among the oldest of the few remaining brick colonials in town—took it from sad to chic. Guests receive the high-end amenities, comforts, and service of a large boutique hotel in a beautiful, intimate, and friendly historic setting. The neutral palette throughout, with crisp white beds and white subway tile in the showers, is soothing but never boring (take a good look at the large portrait in each guest room: the hotel's namesake stands in his military finery, complete with stage-ready eye makeup and dangling diamonds), especially when punctuated with brilliant bathroom floor tiles and gleaming wood floors.

Ecce

$$$ | 19 Silverfish Rd., Narrowsburg, NY, 12719, USA

Ecce is Latin for "behold," and the word fits: from a seemingly precarious perch on a ridge overlooking the Delaware, travelers get a true eagle's eye view of the river's majesty from every room. Sitting on the main deck imparts a feeling not unlike being suspended 300 feet over a valley. It's not unusual for resident raptors, eagles, ospreys, and hawks to float at eye level, riding thermals in search of prey far below. Trails lace the inn's 60 acres, and a hammock graces rock outcropping above the resort. Myriad outdoor activities are close by, including hiking, rafting, kayaking, and skiing. Innkeepers Alan and Kurtis have meticulously created a serene getaway that's removed, but not distant, from other Catskill attractions.

Pros

  • Close to activities
  • Superb breakfast

The inside of the former home of whaling captain Thomas Worth still evokes its late-18th-century origins—but with the boutique Lark Hotels group now in charge, the updated decor is best described as coastal chic, with airy spaces and vintage notes. El Vado Motel

$$$ | 2500 Central Ave. SW, Albuquerque, NM, 87104, USA

Back in the day, El Vado was a prime Route 66 stay-over for those driving west (or back east), and now the 1937 vintage former motor court has been transformed into a destination-worthy, fully modern motel, with a decor that winningly embraces mid-century modernism. The compact, efficient, and comfortable rooms are well-appointed, and benefit from the warm color scheme used to accent walls and bedding, which contrasts with the lighter woods used for the viga-lined ceilings. All rooms face onto a central courtyard, which is set back from the bustle of old Route 66 (Central Avenue); the overall atmosphere is generally quiet. Coffee mugs and makers are provided, as is a growler, which may be walked over to the site’s Ponderosa brewery-supplied El Vado Taproom for a complimentary fill. El Vado Market, a cluster of shops and dining options surrounding El Vado’s plaza area, is just off Central Avenue, adjacent to the motel check-in.

Pros

  • Modern decor with a zippy and warm color scheme
  • Outdoor lounging by the pool
  • On-site taproom and dining spots

Cons

  • Limited parking, so guests may have to look on local streets
  • Spillover sound from plaza-area events can reach rooms
