The Plaza

$$$$ | 768 5th Ave., New York, NY, 10019, USA Fodor's Choice

Famous children's book character Eloise's adopted home on the corner of Central Park, this landmark property is one of New York's most storied hotels, hosting all manner of dignitaries, moneymakers, and royalty. Managed by Fairmont, The Plaza emphasizes service, with white-glove butlers for each guest room and suite, and in-room portable touch screens for contacting the concierge or just turning down the lights. The rooms themselves strike a balance between old-fashioned and modern: yes, there are flat-screen televisions and USB ports, but the design is old-school, with opulent gold-leaf fixtures, faux-fur throws, and big Victorian-style headboards. An Eloise-theme tea is served in the classic Palm Court. The expansive Guerlain spa includes a hammam and a wine lounge.

Pros

  • Historic property with modern amenities
  • Lavish rooms, especially the Legacy Suites
  • Luxurious Guerlain spa

Cons

Plaza Hotel

$ | 230 Plaza St., Las Vegas, NM, 87701, USA Fodor's Choice

Accommodations in this three-story Italianate hotel, which has hosted the likes of Doc Holliday and Jesse James, balance the old and the new—they're not overly fancy, but they and the hotel's common areas, restaurant, and bar exude historic charm and personality, and the central location can't be beat. Rooms offer plenty of space, painted moldings, high stamped-tin ceilings, and a sprinkling of charming antiques, along with modern baths, coffeemakers, and flat-screen TVs. About half the rooms are in the adjacent and similarly historic and also Italianate Ilfeld Building. The old-world ambience carries through to the hotel's Prairie Hill Café, which serves consistently good gastropub fare, like truffled mac and cheese and charcuterie platters. Enjoy a creative cocktail or local craft beer in atmospheric Byron T's Saloon, with its tall windows overlooking the plaza.

Pros

  • Good value with lots of personality
  • Excellent restaurant and bar
  • Many shops and eateries within walking distance

Cons

  • A bit of street noise

Populus Hotel

$$ | 240 14th St., Denver, CO, 80202, USA Fodor's Choice

With an eye-popping exterior design (its jagged collection of slit-shaped windows on an all-white 13-story building is meant to evoke the Colorado state tree, the aspen), this boutique hotel goes all in on the environment: everything about its thoughtfully curated design is nature-focused, from the natural textiles to the forest sounds on the elevator speakers, while its biggest flex is that it aims to be the first carbon-positive hotel in the country. Public spaces are meant to mirror a forest floor, with the lobby and second-floor gathering spaces composed of varying wood shades and earthy art installations like a draped mycelium fabric above the first-floor bar. Upon exiting the elevator to the guest floors, visitors meet a darkened hallway meant to mimic the inner workings of a tree canopy, but the guest rooms themselves are all light thanks to the aforementioned geometric windows. Much of the furniture is upcycled and/or locally sourced, and the rooms are decked out in calming muted tones and pressed local wildflower art prints; beds are comfortable, toiletries are luxe, and about a third of the rooms have built in hammock-like benches to enjoy the windows and views. The ground-floor restaurant and bar, Pasque, serves elevated American cuisine with strong Colorado flavors for all three meals and the lobby coffee bar, Little Owl, offers pastries and locally roasted coffee. The culinary highlight is the rooftop bar and restaurant, Stellar Jay, which offers a similar menu to Pasque but with a wood-fired twist, along with creative cocktails and unbeatable views of the State Capital and surrounding neighborhood. All of this would be impressive on its own, but Populus takes it a step further with its focus on sustainability. Nearly all the disposable material in public spaces and guest rooms is compostable, there’s an on-site biodigester designed to ensure all food waste created is composted, and the hotel promises to plant a tree for every night every guest stays (achieving the coveted goal of becoming carbon positive).

Pros

  • As environmentally sustainable as hotels come
  • Gorgeous, impeccably sourced design
  • Great rooftop bar, restaurant, and coffee shop on-site

Cons

  • Not much dining or nightlife in the surrounding neighborhood
  • Paid valet parking a bit pricey
  • Least expensive rooms on the small side

Proximity Hotel

$$$$ | 704 Green Valley Rd., Greensboro, NC, 27408, USA Fodor's Choice

With its high ceilings, big windows, and exposed beams, this modern hotel makes you feel like you're in the future—or perhaps just in a loft in a bigger city than Greensboro. A sister hotel to the more traditional O. Henry, Proximity features the same checkered cab and London taxis, but it's much more sleek and modern (the design was inspired by memories of old textile mills). Abstract but approachable large-format paintings hang in each room, balancing the iron-and-wood furniture, much of which is built by the hotel group's in-house craftsmen. Proximity holds the distinction of being the first LEED Platinum certified hotel in the country, a status evidenced in the guest experience by small touches like filtered water dispensers on every floor, as well as 100% employee owned. The on-site restaurant, Print Works Bistro, echoes the eco-sensibility with its farm-to-table sourcing and the healthy creek flowing past the patio seating, a natural restoration project by the hotel's developers.

Pros

  • Striking blend of luxury and urban cool
  • Large gym and an inviting outdoor pool
  • Free bike rentals to explore the nearby greenway

Cons

  • The supersleek interior isn't for everyone
  • Outside the city center
  • A bit too posh for most families with small children

Radio Hotel

$ | 2420 Amsterdam Ave., New York, NY, 10033, USA Fodor's Choice

A multihued series of stacked blocks standing out from its prewar neighbors \"in the Heights,\" this boutique hotel knew it needed to be cool, affordable, and authentic to attract visitors all the way uptown, and it is all of these in spades. Rooms are contemporary and stylish, with polished concrete floors, light wood furnishings and sleeping spaces that are minimal in style and palette, while accent walls and bathrooms pop in one primary color pulled from the facade. There are family-friendly options with bunks, studios that are more podlike, as well as king, double, and ADA-compliant rooms with roll-in rain showers. Suites includes a pullout sofa and expansive views of the Manhattan skyline. Despite its busy location just off 181st Street and overlooking the Harlem River Drive, the Radio is quiet and calm, well, in guest rooms, at least; the on-site restaurant, Jalao, an outpost of a popular restaurant of the same name in Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, offers classic and authentic Dominican food that is a huge hit with locals (the neighboring community is known as \"Little DR\"), which makes it a lively vibe that you will want to join. Speaking of locals, hotel programming brings the neighborhood's rich culture and vibrancy in with bachata lessons in the spacious courtyard, customized pop-up shops with local artists, and neighborhood food tours. Bustling Washington Heights offers plentiful attractions, bodegas, and bars, but Midtown Manhattan is a direct and surprisingly fast subway ride on the nearby 1 or A trains. Yankee Stadium is a 10-minute cab ride.  Like many NYC hotels, you'll find the best deals if you book a weeknight stay.

Pros

  • Excellent on-site restaurant
  • Authentic NYC neighborhood with local feel
  • Cool design

Cons

Rainbow Ranch Lodge

$$$$ | 42950 Gallatin Rd., Big Sky, MT, 59730, USA Fodor's Choice

The Rainbow Ranch Lodge's original 1919 main building has been painstakingly restored to its original glory after a 2008 fire. Guests stay in two separate room sections, and special events are held in the barn. The log-accented rooms perch alongside the Gallatin River, where guests can fish from the riverbank or in the rainbow trout–stocked pond (catch and release). An outdoor fireplace stands beside the infinity hot tub. Animal and fishing motifs decorate the spacious guest rooms, which have wood-burning fireplaces (most), filtered water, lodgepole-pine beds, and down comforters. The exceptional restaurant ($$$$), decorated with Western paintings, has one of the state's largest collections of wines; 8,500 bottles are displayed in the Bacchus Room, where groups of up to 10 can dine. Fresh fish is flown in daily. Among the game dishes are elk ragout and a 20-oz. boneless bison rib eye with tarragon salsa verde.

Rancho Caymus Inn

$$$ | 1140 Rutherford Rd., Rutherford, CA, 94573, USA Fodor's Choice

A romantic hacienda-away-from-home that off-season may be the Napa Valley's best value in its price range, this upscale-contemporary boutique hotel near Inglenook and the Rutherford Grill contains rooms whose decor and artworks evoke the area's Mexican heritage. The large guest rooms—most split-level, all with patios, and some with vaulted exposed-beam ceilings—have textured-plaster walls, brown leather furniture, and contemporary variations on stovepipe fireplaces. Hanging plants, ceramic-tile friezes, a mass of wrought iron, and a series of graceful arches contribute to the movie-set glamour of the brick-lined courtyard that contains the rectangular wading pool and adjacent hot tub. The pool isn't huge, but it'll cool you off on a hot summer day, and the courtyard is a peaceful retreat.

Pros

  • Courtyard pool area
  • Smallest rooms are 400 square feet, with several 600 or more
  • Well-trained staff

Cons

  • All rooms have only showers (albeit nice ones)
  • King beds in all rooms (no sofa beds, though a few rollaways available)

Renaissance New York Harlem Hotel

$ | 233 W. 125th St., New York, NY, 10027, USA Fodor's Choice

Conveniently located right on 125th Street, The Renaissance New York Harlem Hotel is hard to miss, with its bright lights out front that read \"Victoria,\" an ode to being in the space of the famed Victoria Theater. Aside from its central location, one of the best perks of staying at The Renaissance New York Harlem Hotel is its connection to The Apollo Stages at The Victoria, which are accessible via the third floor of the hotel's building. On the fifth floor is where you'll find the hotel's front desk, along with a restaurant/bar, appropriately named The Victoria Theater Restaurant, which offers live music on select nights. The highest rooms can be found on the 27th floor, and when the elevator doors open, you're greeted with floor-to-ceiling window views of Harlem. Overall, the vibe is super swanky, with gold accents throughout the building, and plenty of dedicated memorabilia to some of Harlem's most prominent musical figures.

Cons

  • Bar and restaurant on-site is pricey

Charleston architect Neil Stevenson designed this boutique hotel to be swank and suave to the hilt, featuring several rooftop terraces with sleek sofas and prime views. Step inside the suites within this pair of 1800s buildings and you're in a world of exposed brick, warm wood floors, soaring ceilings, and swank decor.
