Brannan Cottage Inn

$$$ | 109 Wappo Ave., Calistoga, CA, 94515, USA Fodor's Choice

The owner of two distinctive lodgings—the six-room Brannan Cottage Inn, whose centerpiece is an 1860s cottage from Calistoga's original spa era, and five lofts two blocks away—operates them jointly as the Brannan Hotels. Although the stained-oak floors, wainscoting, and retro bathroom fixtures of the inn’s guest rooms recall Victorian times, contemporary comfort is the goal: the beds have plush mattresses and high-thread-count sheets, and rooms are equipped with large flat-screen TVs, electronics charging stations, and espresso machines. Eco-friendly touches abound, most visibly in the LED lighting throughout the property. A tall palm, even taller twin cypresses, and an elm tree thought to be 300 years old shade the inn.

Pros

  • Tree-shaded setting
  • Easy access to downtown restaurants and shopping
  • On-site Sam’s General Store for coffee and light meals

Cons

  • Showers but no bathtubs in some rooms
  • Must book through property for free breakfast
  • Lacks pool and other amenities of larger lodgings

Casa Cody

$$$ | 175 S. Cahuilla Rd., Palm Springs, CA, 92262, USA Fodor's Choice

Boutique hospitality firm Casetta dusted off a hodgepodge of buildings—including an early-1900s adobe, a rare 1932 Olympic cottage, and a hacienda hotel once run by Buffalo Bill Cody's cousin, Harriet—to create the kind of exceptional lodging where you can easily lose track of time floating in one of two pools, eating fruit plucked off a property tree and sipping tea or coffee (available all day) in the bougainvillea-covered arcade, or watching sunlight and shadows crawl across the walls from your snuggly, never-want-to-leave bed. Studios, suites, and stand-alone casitas feature dark woods, Zellige tile, burnished metals, and rich colors like hunter green and burnt orange, which, when assembled just so, create a tailored, refined, farmhouse-meets-Santa-Fe-artist-studio vibe. The Colony

$$$$ | 155 Hammon Ave., FL, 33480, USA Fodor's Choice

This exuberant and undeniably charming British-colonial-style hotel has spacious suites and chic decor and sits in a particularly convenient location, just one block from Worth Avenue and one block from a pretty beach on the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel underwent a five-year, $18 million top-to-bottom renovation in 2015 and rooms got a refresh in 2022. Taking inspiration from the hotel’s signature de Gournay wallpaper, rooms are done in soft pinks, greens, and ocean blues, and they have modern amenities mixed with vintage Palm Beach style. The pool area has ornamental plants, fountains, furniture, and pale pink umbrellas reminiscent of South Beach's grand art deco hotels. The pool itself is actually shaped like the state of Florida, although the panhandle is severely reduced in size. A signature Beach Buggy program shuttles guests to and from the ocean in a custom Palm Beach Pink buggy. An attentive staff, youthful yet experienced, is buzzing with competence and a desire to please. Spacious suites have sleeper sofas, and luxurious two-bedroom villas have laundry facilities and full kitchens. The bar is super popular with locals during the early evening hours.

Pros

  • Unbeatable location
  • Gorgeous decor
  • Luxe touches like pillow-top mattresses and beach butler service

Cons

  • Lobby is small
  • Elevators are tight
  • Beach is a stroll away
