The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection

$$ | 59 W. 44th St., New York, NY, 10036, USA Fodor's Choice

One of Manhattan's most historic properties, the Algonquin is a landmark of literary history made famous by the luminaries of the famed Round Table (now the hotel restaurant's moniker). Although vintage vibes pervade all corners of this Midtown legend—think oak details and carved pillars in the lobby—today's hotel offers modernized rooms and contemporary comforts, including free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and comfy in-room accommodations. Make time for dinner or drinks in the famed literary lobby, where you might spot the hotel's famous Hamlet the cat roaming about. Channel the brilliance of Dorothy Parker, whose inimitable quotes are displayed throughout the property. The Round Table restaurant serves three meals daily, with plenty of space for animated conversation, while the Blue Bar has a chic atmosphere perfect for a date over martinis.

Appalachian Mountain Club Maine Wilderness Lodges

Within Maine's 100-Mile Wilderness, Appalachian Mountain Club's 100,000-plus acres encompass three historic sporting-camp retreats that make it easy for guests to recreate in the great outdoors; each has cabins and a woodsy main lodge with a fireplace, sitting area with games and books, and long tables where meals (included in rates) are served family-style. Cabins have wood stoves, and the locales have a bunkhouse (or two), sauna, and a bathhouse with hot showers. There are a few ADA-accessible cabins with private baths, at Gorman Chairback Lodge & Cabins and Medawisla Lodge & Cabins; one of the bunkhouses at the latter has its own shared bath. On the backcountry lands surrounding these retreats and Little Lyford Lodge & Cabins, the moose are abundant and the hiking, fly-fishing, canoeing, kayaking, standup paddleboarding, biking (mountain, gravel, and fat-tire), birding, and trail running are excellent. Naturalist programs are offered periodically in the summer. Come winter, about 90 miles of trails—part of AMC's free interconnected trail system—are groomed for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking.

Pros

  • Courtesy canoes, kayaks, standup paddleboards, and snowshoes
  • Ski, snowshoe, or fat-tire bike from lodge to lodge on AMC's 90 miles of groomed trails

Ideal for travelers seeking design pizzazz, a see-and-be-seen atmosphere, and first-class amenities, this five-story downtown Napa property fuses New York City chic and Las Vegas glamour. ARIA Resort & Casino

$$ | 3730 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Las Vegas, NV, 89158, USA Fodor's Choice

Unlike most casino hotels, ARIA has an abundance of light, even in standard guest rooms (every one of which has corner views), and their modern style makes this one of the Strip's most contemporary-feeling options (not to mention the excellent pool area). Tech-geeks will love the touch-screen pad that can handle reservations and ordering and control everything from lights to temperature (check out the \"good-night\" button, which powers it all down). Bathrooms are modern and spacious, and nightly turndown service and laptop-size safes are nice touches. The ARIA Sky Suites are notable and start at more than 1,000 square feet; they are downright palatial and have some of the best views in town (as well as their own lobby and pool). The pool deck is also worth exploring, especially for midweek cabana specials, which can be surprisingly affordable. ARIA remains one of the largest buildings in the world to achieve LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Pros

  • High-tech rooms
  • Natural light
  • Excellent restaurants

Cons

  • Shower setup soaks the tub
  • Long walk to Strip

Astro Motel

$$ | 323 Santa Rosa Ave., Santa Rosa, CA, 95404, USA Fodor's Choice

The 1960s are back and splashier than ever at this tastefully and whimsically restored motel next to a park and diagonally across from the Luther Burbank Home & Gardens. The owners of the popular Spinster Sisters restaurant around the corner, who've been collecting mid-century modern furniture for years, have put their collection to swell use furnishing the Astro, a design lover's delight, where something different catches the eye every few seconds. Each room is individually decorated, some with Sputnik chandeliers and vintage Eames chairs and accessories like pottery, old cameras, and wooden ice buckets. Built-in benches in some rooms are useful for storing luggage, and all rooms have flat-screen TVs and refrigerators but no microwaves or (except for two suites) coffeemakers. $$$$ | 1297 Bishop's Lodge Rd., Santa Fe, NM, 87501, USA Fodor's Choice

Although this historic resort is just a 10-minute drive from the Plaza, its setting in a bucolic valley at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains makes it feel worlds apart. Guests can revel in seasonal activities including hiking, swimming, yoga, art classes, and fly-fishing in an on-site trout habitat. Bishop Lodge's popular stables offer scenic trail rides in the Santa Fe National Forest. History runs deep here with the nearly 150-year-old chapel built by Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy—a figure lionized by writer Willa Cather—at the resort's center. Rooms are luxurious and feature tasteful, contemporary Southwest decor, many with balconies or patios with spectacular mountain vistas. Special accommodations for families or large groups include a 12-room Bunk House and indoor and outdoor event spaces.
