Cedar Lakes Estate

$$ | 1 Team USA Way, Port Jervis, NY, 12771, USA Fodor's Choice

About a 100-minute drive away from the center of Manhattan is this cottage-chic property sprawled across 500 acres of trees, water, and sunshine, where you can expect peaceful cabin-style accommodations equipped with ultra-comfy mattresses, chef-cooked meals, and discreet members of the concierge that make everything smooth-sailing. Breakfasts and dinners are served at the pavilion, which is romantically furnished with rattan chairs and lit with long, flickering candles. During dinner, the property's famous butter cart, stocked with a dome of creamy butter, bowls of seasonings, and pillowy sliced bread, is driven around by amenable service staff and is a beautiful sight to behold. Picnic lunches---deliciously balanced with a sandwich, a salad, and a side---are packaged independently and delivered to wherever you are.

\n

Nature is abundant and accessible: An easy 1.8-mile trail loops adjacent to the estate, which provides an opportunity for a brisk foray into the surrounding woods. The tranquil lake opens up during the warmer months for boat rides, fishing, and even cold plunges. The pleasures of nature are still achievable on the estate grounds: The sauna, opened in spring of 2026, has a fantastic panoramic view of the Shawangunk Mountains, while the property's three clear \"igloos\" allow for lakeside, mountaintop, or under-the-tree private dining or happy hour, perfect for celebrating special occasions.

\n

Every upscale resort thrives on the foundation of excellent service, and Cedar Lakes is no exception. The members of the concierge will materialize wherever you are to escort you to activities, light campfires, and deliver picnic lunches, all with a low-key, easy chat that doesn't intrude on your personal space and time. If you're the type to sit at a bar to chat with strangers, you'll enjoy a midday pour at the Treehouse Bar or a nightcap at the Parlor Bar, where conversations flow with ease and joy.

Pros

  • A host of evergreen and seasonal complimentary activities
  • Cottage-chic candlelit meals in the pavilion
  • Expertly crafted picnic lunches delivered wherever you are

Cons

  • The walls of the shared cottages are not completely soundproof
  • Alcoholic beverages and espresso drinks are not included in the resort fee

The Charles Hotel

$$ | 1 Bennett St., Cambridge, MA, 02138, USA Fodor's Choice

It used to be that The Charles was the place to stay in Cambridge, and while other luxury hotels have since arrived to give it a little healthy competition, this Harvard Square staple is standing strong. Lower floors are replete with Le Corbusier furniture, sketches by JFK himself, bookcases packed with faux hard covers, and local artists' work. Gracious service and top-notch room amenities like waffle robes, shaker detailed furniture, goose-down comforters, and bathrooms with phones, gigantic marble showers, and LCD mirror-TVs keep the hotel in high demand. Relax in the lobby library, chock-full of titles, some autographed by authors who are also frequent guests. Sign up for an art tour of the property or pick up a self-guided map of Cambridge. For a partial river or skyline view, ask for something above the seventh floor (the corner rooms are best). Check out adjacent Henrietta's Table, a mainstay for local, seasonal food; on-site Bar Enza, home of the 100-layer lasagna; the new One Reason Garden Bar; or the RegattaBar. The on-site 4,000-square-foot Corbu Spa & Salon features French-inspired herbal treatments.  For the best rate, call the hotel directly.

Pros

  • Two blocks from the T Red Line to Boston
  • Several on-site dining options
  • On-site 4,000-square-foot Corbu Spa & Salon

Cons

  • Rooms can be noisy
  • Crowded self-park

Chisos Mountains Lodge

$$ | End of Chisos Basin Rd., Big Bend National Park, TX, 79834, USA Fodor's Choice

With ranger talks just next door at the visitor center, miles of hiking trails to suit all levels of fitness, and plenty of wildlife nearby, this comfortable lodging is a great place for families, though as of this writing is closed likely through mid-2027 while undergoing a major renovation. The majority of rooms are motel-style (some with balconies and fantastic views), but for a romantic getaway, reserve one of the five Roosevelt Stone Cottages built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. • Steps from numerous hikes
  • Reasonable rates for the dramatic setting

Cimarron Rose Bed & Breakfast

$$ | 689 Oso Ridge Rte. (NM 53), 87020, USA Fodor's Choice

Rustic Southwestern comfort is the specialty of the house at this B&B on 20 ponderosa-pine-laden acres. Proprietor Sheri McWethy has created a "green" inn, with natural-fiber sheets, no perfumes or dyes in the cleaning products, absolutely no smoking allowed in rooms or anywhere on-site, and a conscientious approach to water use. But Cimarron is lush with amenities and atmosphere, from the discreet private patios and paths winding around the inspired gardens to the detail that makes each suite distinctive and cozy—this is a place you could hole up in and spend your days just wandering the grounds or hiking the nearby trails, or simply dipping into the B&B's library. Full breakfasts are delivered to your door each morning—banana-blue-corn pancakes (with real maple syrup) and Mexican hot chocolate are favorites—and special dietary requests are accommodated with notice. Each room is individually decorated in tropical prints, with rattan and wicker or sleek modern furnishings. The luxe villas have smart TVs, private patios or balconies, and dedicated Wi-Fi access. Both suites and rooms have full kitchens (kitchenettes are in the studios). Two pools, including a waterfall pool, along with a thatched Tiki Bar, plus hammocks under the palms, promise the perfect South Florida experience. Live music at the Tiki Bar draws locals as well as hotel guests. Homemade sangrias and a list of frozen concoctions are the drinks du jour. Though no restaurants are on site, there are many—along with cute shops—within the block on Atlantic Avenue.

Created meticulously from six different buildings, this inn hasn't a single detail left unattended—period furniture and antiques fill common areas and guest rooms; a queen-size bed is the smallest you'll find, dressed in 300-thread-count linens; treats are left on the pillow for nightly turndown service; and there's complimentary wine and cheese in the afternoon. Crystal Cove Bed & Breakfast

$$ | 635 Compton Ridge Rd., Branson, MO, 65616, USA Fodor's Choice

Rustic and romantic, the Crystal Cove Bed & Breakfast is an intimate luxurious alternative to some of Table Rock Lake’s larger resorts. It features seven cabin suites, all of which come with custom-made king-sized log beds, fireplaces, and small Jacuzzis. The owners go out of their way to make sure their guests have a memorable experience, and along with breakfast they have a 24-hour “coffee & sweet shop,” that they keep well stocked with hot drinks and homemade cakes. There's great hiking on the mountainside, and they have paddle boats for guests' use at their private boat dock on the lake, a half-mile away, or you can just lounge on the decks by a waterfall.

Pros

  • Quiet rooms
  • Enthusiastically hospitable owners

Cons

  • Not on the banks of the lake
  • Breakfast isn’t served until 9 am most days

Dawn Ranch

$$ | 16467 Hwy. 116, Guerneville, CA, 95446, USA Fodor's Choice

A woodsy 22-acre property positioned as a deluxe, reconnect-with-nature variation on mid-century roadside resorts, Dawn Ranch provides accommodations ranging from one-room, cedar-shingled cabins and larger "chalets" with sitting areas to cottages and a bungalow. High-quality beds, linens, and bath products signal the upscale intent, but the minimal decor and the rooms’ lack of TVs place the emphasis on unplugging and unwinding. The resort helps guests achieve this goal with grounds containing meadows, a fruit orchard, a culinary garden, and a path through redwoods, oaks, and sycamores leading down to a Russian River dock. The sandy Johnson’s Beach is a short walk away. On-site activities include yoga and meditation sessions and occasional live music on the patio below The Lodge at Dawn Ranch restaurant, whose cuisine draws inspiration from California, South America, and Europe. Several “glamping” tents are set up in the orchard from late spring to early fall.

Pros

  • High-quality beds, linens, and bath products
  • The Lodge for cuisine inspired by California, South America, and Europe
  • Emphasis on unplugging and unwinding

Cons

  • Minimum-stay requirement some weekends
  • Some rooms are across the highway from the office, restaurant, and meadows
  • No TVs in rooms (but solid Wi-Fi)
