Ke Iki Beach Bungalows

$$$$ | 59-579 Ke Iki Rd., HI, 96712, USA

At this 1½-acre, sloped, beachfront lot with six duplex bungalows, you can choose from studios and one- or two-bedroom units—outfitted with breezy beach-house furnishings, individual grills, hammocks, and picnic tables—and enjoy access to a 200-foot strand of sugary white-sand beach running between the North Shore's famous Waimea Bay and Ehukai Beach (Banzai Pipeline). Lae Nani Resort Kauai by OUTRIGGER

$$$ | 410 Papaloa Rd., HI, 96746, USA

Ruling Hawaiian chiefs once returned from ocean voyages to this spot, now host to comfortable condominiums, and OUTRIGGER has created attractive plant, water, and rock features. Though there's generally no air-conditioning, there's typically a good breeze. The landscaped grounds include lighted tennis courts and a large pool. The beach is swimmable, and the property is near shops, restaurants, and a coastal walking and biking path. There is a three-night minimum stay.

Mahina Surf

$$$ | 4057 Lower Honoapiilani Hwy., HI, 96761, USA

Of the many condo complexes lining the ocean-side stretch of Honoapiilani Highway, this one offers friendly service, a saline oceanfront pool, and affordable units—some with million-dollar views. You won't be charged for parking or local phone calls, and most of the individually owned one- and two-bedroom units have been renovated to include flat-screen TVs and granite countertops in the kitchens. The interiors tend to be charming "old Hawaii" (lots of rattan furniture, silk flowers, and decorative items). This quiet older complex is a short stroll away from Honokowai's grocery store, beaches, and restaurants.

Pros

  • Oceanfront barbecues
  • Resident turtles hang out on the rocks below
  • No hidden fees

Cons

  • Rocky shoreline rather than a beach

Makena Surf

$$$$ | 4850 Makena Alanui, Makena, HI, 96753, USA

For travelers who've done all there is to do on Maui and just want simple but luxurious relaxation at a condo that spills onto a private beach, this is the spot. The secluded complex, which hugs the South Shore coastline, is designed to belie its size—from the road it's hard to tell that the two- to three-bedroom units are taller than a palm tree, all with ocean views. Privacy envelops the grounds, which include remnants of an ancient Hawaiian fishing heiau (a temple comprising a rock formation).

Pros

  • Away from it all, yet still close enough to "civilization"
  • Great snorkeling right off the beach
  • Laundry facilities in every unit and daily housekeeping

Cons

  • Too secluded and "locked-up" for some
  • Split-level units may be difficult for guests with mobility issues
  • Check-in at a different location

The Neighborhood Hotel Lincoln Park

$ | 2626 N. Clark St., Chicago, IL, 60614, USA

You couldn't pick a better name for this 14-suite charmer: a lovingly rehabbed 19th-century apartment building set in Lincoln Park's residential heart, it's about as close as you can get to living like a local without signing a lease. While it's not a luxe downtown high-rise (a fact you might feel keenly aware of when you're hoofing it up the stairs), creature comforts like modern kitchenettes, soundbars, and even yoga mats abound. Better still, suites are bursting with vintage moldings, warm light, and artwork that celebrates 1980s Chicago pop culture, making for memorable, if not hyper-polished, spaces. A rear coach house offers extra privacy.
