Harmony Motel

$ | 71161 Twentynine Palms Hwy., Twentynine Palms, CA, 92277, USA

In the late 1980s, while working on and taking photos for the now legendary album, The Joshua Tree, the rock band U2 found itself holed up at this circa-1952 roadside motel atop a hill overlooking town and beneath the national park’s jagged peaks. If you want luxury, look elsewhere; though some rooms offer kitchenettes, all have a hodgepodge of furnishings and basic bathrooms and amenities. But if you seek a storied stay, this fits the bill. You can even recreate one of the photos that made the final liner notes: the hotel sign that serendipitously features musical notes is still standing.

Pros

  • Cactus gardens and nature trail
  • Outdoor pool and hot tub
  • A mile from 49 Palms Oasis trail

Cons

  • Small property that books quickly
  • Dated decor
  • On a busy highway

The Harper Inn

$ | 3038 Orchard La., Placerville, CA, 95667, USA

Snappy design, full kitchens, and proximity to downtown, wineries, and Apple Hill make this small early-1940s motel renovated in 2022 into vacation rentals a delight for its price point. The aesthetically pleasing suitelike accommodations have separate bedrooms (king or queen beds), walk-in rain showers, 60-inch smart TVs, and responsive Wi-Fi. The husband-and-wife hosts pride themselves on the TLC they've put into the house and the hospitality they show their guests. Some noise bleed-through between rooms and the less than scintillating location in a residential cul-de-sac between stand-alone commercial establishments and a strip mall count as drawbacks, but the pluses for the most part outweigh them in this Gold Country town with few worthy nonchain options.

Pros

  • Responsive Wi-Fi
  • Aesthetically pleasing suitelike accommodations
  • Husband-and-wife hosts

Cons

  • Lacks the amenities of full-service establishments
  • Less than scintillating location
  • Airbnb rental
  • Need to call owner's cell to book a particular room

Harrah's Las Vegas Hotel & Casino

$ | 3475 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Las Vegas, NV, 89109, USA

Old-school Vegas is alive and well at this affordable Center Strip property. The hotel, which opened in 1973, has undergone periodic renovations to keep up with the times, though it is no longer a destination property. Mountain Deluxe Tower Rooms are done in cool neutrals, Valley rooms have rain showers, and Cabana rooms have direct access to the pool. The casino floor, however, still has a lot of mirrors—a much less cool throwback to the 1970s. The sportsbook has mobile ordering, with food delivered to your seat. The pool, though small in comparison with others on the Strip, is relaxing and fun. The most rollicking time is had at Carnaval Court, where bartenders mix drinks with acrobatics and flair and there are live DJs.

Pros

  • Throwback vibe with some modern touches
  • Affordable, reliable rooms
  • Ideal location

Cons

  • Zero wow factor
  • Small pool
  • Lots and lots of mirrors

Harrah's Tahoe Hotel/Casino

$ | 15 U.S. 50, Stateline, NV, 89449, USA

The 18-story hotel's major selling point is that every room has two full bathrooms, a boon if you're traveling with family. Upper-floor guest rooms have lake or mountain views. Standard rooms, spacious at about 475 square feet but in need, comment some guests, of a decor update, have coffeemakers, but you'll pay a small fee for a refrigerator. Higher-priced rooms, which benefit from softer hues, come with refrigerators. Among the restaurants, the top-floor Friday's Station Steak & Seafood Grill, with good views from every table, is a standout; there's also a bar on the 18th floor. A tunnel runs under U.S. 50 to Harveys, which, like Harrah's, is now part of the Caesars empire. Cheaper rates are available midweek.

Pros

  • Lake and mountain views from upper-floor rooms
  • Good midweek values
  • Top-floor steak house with good views from all tables

Cons

  • Can get noisy
  • Room decor needs an update
  • Lacks intimacy

Harveys Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel and Casino

$ | 18 U.S. 50, Stateline, NV, 89449, USA

This resort began as a cabin in 1944, and now it's Tahoe's largest casino-hotel, where premium rooms have custom furnishings, oversize marble baths, minibars, and excellent lake views. No rooms have refrigerators (request one if desired), and only some have coffeemakers. The hotel amenities include a full-service spa, a 24-hour business center, a ski shuttle, and plenty of shops. Hell's Kitchen, one of lauded chef Gordon Ramsay's outlets, delights diners seeking fine food with an entertainment connection, as will Wolf by Vanderpump, the new-in-2024 restaurant by Bravo celeb Lisa Vanderpump. For a thick steak, head to the always dependable Sage Room, which opened in the late 1940s on the casino floor and is still going strong in its perch on the 19th floor. Harveys Cabaret is the hotel's showroom. In summer check out the popular outdoor concert series.

The Highlands

$ | 14000 Woodland Dr., Guerneville, CA, 95446, USA

Two hoteliers with an eye for low-budget panache teamed up to rejuvenate the decades-old cabins at this redwood-studded hillside (TV-free) adult property near downtown and the main Russian River beach. Retro touches like burlwood coffee tables, redwood paneling, Formica tables, and floral curtains evoke Guerneville's mid-century casual-resort era, while the LGBTQ-friendly atmosphere recalls the area's 1970s and 1980s heyday. Hilton Garden Inn Tampa Ybor Historic District

$ | 1700 E. 9th Ave., Tampa, FL, 33605, USA

Staying at this chain hotel across from Centro Ybor means you can walk to the historic district's many restaurants, attractions, and nightspots. There is an on-site restaurant that serves breakfast, but be sure to have at least one morning meal—perhaps with a café cubano or café con leche and a slice of Cuban bread slathered in butter—at a local spot.
