The Ameswell Hotel

$ | 800 Moffett Blvd., Mountain View, CA, 94043, USA

Just a freeway exit away from the NASA Ames Research Center and Google Headquarters, this fun, sharp hotel nicely balances being a dressed-up business hotel with a playful side. Space is the overarching theme but in a subtle way through artwork and decorations. Residing on 10 acres, the Ameswell is kind of its own campus and not walking distance to anything. Luckily, there is plenty to do with an outdoor saltwater pool and fire pits to linger at in the front lawn, plus the contemporary cuisine and cocktails at its restaurant, Roger. Rooms are impressively large and nicely decorated with handsome blue dot-painted wallpaper, modern-style furnishings, and floor-to-ceiling windows that offer views of the distant mountains from many rooms.

Pros

  • Great wellness focus with spa and fitness center
  • Outdoor Airstream bar
  • Comfortable, nicely designed rooms

Cons

  • Techy vibe might be annoying to some guests
  • Rates wildly vary from weekdays to weekends
  • Sinks are weirdly designed

The Amway Grand Plaza Hotel

$$$$ | 187 Monroe Ave. NW, Grand Rapids, MI, 49503, USA

Grand Rapids' largest hotel is also the most elegant place in town. Seven room and suite categories are divided between two sections: the Pantlind wing reflects the hotel's 1900s heritage (when it was called the Pantlind); the 29-story glass tower, with a 25th-floor concierge level, is very contemporary. Seven restaurants are sure to please even the most picky palate, with everything from top-notch steaks at Ruth's Chris Steak House to top-floor views paired with eclectic dishes like barbecued Amish chicken or Peruvian goat stew at Cygnus 27.

Pros

  • Great views of the Grand Rapids skyline
  • Lobby houses a range of boutiques

Anaheim Majestic Garden Hotel

$$ | 900 S. Disneyland Dr., Anaheim, CA, 92802, USA

This English Tudor looking hotel is a little prince or princess's dream. It's the castle of Princess Corinne and her white dragon friend named Shadow. She is friends with all of the nearby Disney Princesses, and her story is featured in the lobby and on each floor. Outside there is a pretty rose garden, white gazebo garden, and movie night on the lawn during the summer. Fountains and a pond with koi fish and ducks are serene water features. Princess Corinne invites guests to join her for fireside story time at the grand fireplace lounge on certain evenings, and visits guests on the weekend during Garden Court Bistro's breakfast buffet. She also will come tuck little ones in and read them a bedtime story in the evening. Rooms are sizable; some first-floor rooms open onto interior gardens and a pool area. Some premium rooms have royal headboards and others have castle bunk beds among misty forest walls. A complimentary Dream Machine shuttle takes guests to the entrance of Disney theme parks. Pets are welcome for an additional fee. The on-site Hanagi Japanese Restaurant is open at 5 pm, offering fresh sushi and an interactive hot pot and shabu-shabu Wednesday through Sunday.

  • Large theme lobby
  • Spacious rooms with comfortable beds

Anderson School Hotel

$$ | 18607 Bothell Way NE, Seattle, 98011, USA

A giant indoor pool is a rarity in the Pacific Northwest, making this spot in demand for that reason alone, but the proximity to Woodinville's wine country and location in the sweet lakeside suburb of Bothell are almost as compelling. Like all of the properties from quirky hospitality group McMenamins, the unique art (each room has a name, biography, and custom headboard) and fun story behind the property are part of the draw. However, the sometimes overzealous branding also means the signage is sparse and confusing, so you have to wander to find the brewery, movie theater, and that famous pool.

Pros

  • Unique art
  • Multiple food and drink options
  • Enormous pool

Cons

  • Dated bathroom fixtures
  • Dark hallways
  • Little signage

Archer Hotel New York

$$ | 45 W. 38th St., New York, NY, 10018, USA

Rooftop bar Spyglass, with its killer view of the Empire State Building, is the star of this boutique property just south of Bryant Park, with its subtly industrial-inspired look that nods to the neighborhood’s past. Aston Waikiki Circle Hotel

$$ | 2464 Kalakaua Ave., Honolulu, HI, 96815, USA

Built to resemble a Chinese lantern, this circular, 14-story hotel is a Waikiki landmark, with a charming interior design that brings the Pacific inside, beginning at check-in with breezes that flow through an open-air lobby. Honeymooners, snowbirds, and old-timers love this little hotel, where the front-desk staff takes the time to get to know you. Although rooms are small, with tiny bathrooms that have only (tiny) showers, they're done in bright, aqua-and-yellow color schemes, they utilize every bit of space well, and they all have a lanai with a view that guests return for again and again. Not that you'll be in your room much: Waikiki Beach and the famed Duke statue are right down the front stairs and across the street. The popular and casual Eggs 'n Things eatery is in the lobby, and an ABC Store is steps away.

The Astor Hotel

$ | 924 E. Juneau Ave., Milwaukee, WI, 53202, USA

Antiques fill this luxurious eight-story 1920 hotel, built on a bluff above Lake Michigan. The opulent grand lobby, with its stained-glass skylight over the reception area, somewhat overshadows the rooms, which are large and outfitted with antique-reproduction cherrywood furniture; some have impressive views of downtown Milwaukee.
