Champlin's Marina and Resort

$$ | 80 West Side Rd., Block Island, RI, 02807, USA

A rarity on Block Island, this full-service resort is outside of town, making it a quiet oasis from the summer bustle in New Harbor. That said, it's not too quiet: in addition to 55 guest rooms spread around five buildings and a pair of two-bedroom suites, the resort is home to a popular marina bar that hosts live music nightly in the summer, a charming waterfront coffee shop, a poolside snack bar, and an ice cream stand serving Gifford's hard ice cream and soft serve. Firepits, cornhole games, and bocce courts fill a pleasant courtyard, and the Galley House restaurant serves lobster rolls and other sandwiches as well as a handful of entrees. The island's largest resort marina has slips for 100 boats, including some big enough to accommodate superyachts.

  • Newly renovated rooms are bright and comfortable

Cons

Clegg's Hotel

$$ | 478 Bayberry Walk, Fire Island, NY, 11770, USA

Stepping off the ferry at Ocean Beach, you practically fall into Clegg's Hotel, in the center of town and a five-minute walk from the beach, and this is authentic, no-frills Fire Island. Fashioned after a sailors' rooming house, it has the feel of a college residence, but details like a flower painted on each door—done 20 years ago by a now locally famous artist—give it a touch of charm. Rooms are basic and clean; studios have water or garden views and private bathrooms, and regular rooms face the garden and share four bathrooms. Owner Tyler Streck takes pride in his place, started by his grandfather Eugene "Gene" Clegg in 1946, and welcomes guests like family. Perched on Kodiak's rocky coastline, this house contains a suite of three rooms with a common sitting area, private entrance, shared bath, and kitchen facilities, complete with a bottomless jar of homemade granola. The main house has a deluxe room overlooking the water with a private bath and access to the upstairs reading library. Relax on the cliffside deck and enjoy the artwork and organic gardens of hosts Marty and Marion Owen, who also offer wildlife viewing aboard their 42-foot yacht, the Sea Breeze.
