Cromwell Manor Inn

$$ | 174 Angola Rd., Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, 12518, USA

After you arrive at this stately Greek Revival mansion and pass through the grand columns of the portico, any hint of formality dissolves as the innkeepers greet you with a plate of fresh-baked cookies. Combining manor-house elegance with bed-and-breakfast-style warmth, this 1820 architectural treasure is surrounded by lawns, gardens, and a patio with sunset views. Many rooms have fireplaces and four-poster beds with sheer panels or crocheted canopies; some also feature cavernous marble bathrooms. Windows provide pastoral vistas without another house in sight—except the 1764 Chimney's Cottage, which contains four of the guest rooms, all filled with period antiques. There's also an adjacent farm with a shop for hot coffee, pickles, pies, and jams.

Pros

  • Pastoral setting
  • Short drive to attractions
  • Free Wi-Fi

Cons

  • Some rooms are in a separate building
  • A farm store is next door, but you have to drive to get to restaurants

Crowne Plaza Austin

$$ | 6121 N I-35, Austin, TX, 78752, USA

The local Highland Mall and shopping plaza are 2 miles from this highway-side hotel, continually bustling with conventions and business travelers; downtown is 4–5 miles away. Satisfying, but wholly unremarkable American cuisine is served in the Crossroads Grille, but there are several decent restaurants nearby. Complimentary vans shuttle guests within a 3-mile radius. Rooms are clean and comfortable and an executive floor offers upgraded amenities and lounge access. Another extra is the Sleep Advantage packet, with a calming CD, eye mask, earplugs, and lavender linen spray.

  • Full-service

  • Impersonal chain hotel atmosphere

The Dagny

$$ | 89 Broad St., Boston, MA, 02110, USA

Fresh off a renovation in 2023, The Dagny caters to all types of travelers who will feel right at home grabbing a coffee to-go at Tradesman (the on-site cafe), working from the library, or de-stressing in the excellent, expansive fitness center on Technogym and Peloton machines. Guest rooms are immaculate and modern in calming gray and blue tones, featuring one or two beds, leather couches, and windows that actually open. Although this independent hotel brand is new to the Boston market, its location in the historic 1928 Batterymarch Building sure isn't; once the city's first skyscraper, the 14-story building no longer holds that title.

  • Concierges offer curated itineraries
  • Convenient location to the Waterfront, Financial District, and historic downtown
  • 2,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art fitness center

Cons

  • No pool or spa

$$ | 13640 State Hwy. 26, Copper Harbor, MI, 49950, USA

On 27 acres of wooded grounds overlooking Lake Superior, with 600 feet of rocky lakeshore, this place is part antiques shop, part rustic lodge. Inside and out, it is a true log-cabin design, with an extensive balcony for drinking in those fabulous views while sipping a glass of wine. Co-owner Ruth van Goor is also an antiques appraiser and her eye for stunning historical furnishings and art is evident in all four guest suites. Dew Drop Inn Hotel & Lounge

$$ | 2836 Lasalle St., New Orleans, LA, 70115, USA

New Orleanians rejoice at the return of this Civil Rights and music-history landmark: a thoughtful team restored Central City's iconic Dew Drop Inn to its former glory (plus modern amenities). In its heyday, The Dew Drop's lounge was "the South's swankiest spot," a symbol of inclusivity and safety for Black travelers, and a bright icon of Black entrepreneurship in the Jim Crow South. Legends like Ray Charles, Little Richard, Irma Thomas, and Fats Domino, hung out here, helping coin the first sounds of rock n' roll in the '50s and '60s. This new iteration honors its history with a small museum and nods to former musical guests throughout. Rooms are simple but stylish, and service is as friendly as it gets. A new back patio and pool is a welcome addition. Music lovers should book one of the Inn's two VIP suites---part hotel suite, part green room---with open windows looking out over the music venue stage.

Pros

  • One-of-a-kind, historic stay
  • Musical past thoughtfully woven into design details
  • Like having a private back room at a concert

Cons

  • Neighborhood not walking distance to tourist attractions
  • No frills amenities and rooms
