Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa

$$$$ | 100 Boyes Blvd./Hwy. 12, Sonoma, CA, 95476, USA

The draw at this mission-style resort is the extensive spa with its array of massages and treatments, some designed for couples. The focus on fitness and rejuvenation extends to an adjacent 7,100-yard golf course winding through trees and vineyards, a changing schedule of fitness classes, and guided hiking excursions on Fridays and weekends. Fairmont and Deluxe guest rooms aren't large (some of the former are less than 300 square feet) but are supremely comfortable; some have patios or balconies. Vineyard (500 square feet) and Mission (550 square feet) suites feel roomier and have fireplaces and Jacuzzi tubs. Most Vineyard Suites have patios or balconies, as do some Mission ones. A few Legacy Collection one-bedroom suites range from 600 to 1,010 square feet. The chefs at the resort's Santé restaurant prepare modern American cuisine.

Pros

  • Full-service hotel
  • Enormous spa and other wellness services
  • Santé restaurant's modern American cuisine

Cons

  • Smallish standard rooms
  • Parking fee (self or valet)
  • Hefty resort fee, albeit with decent perks

The Fearrington House Inn

$$$$ | 2000 Fearrington Village Center, Pittsboro, NC, 27312, USA

Built to join the ranks of Relais & Chateaux, this luxury inn sits on a nearly 250-year-old farm that has been remade to resemble a country hamlet. Belted Galloway cows, which are black on the ends and white in the middle, roam the pasture near the entrance. The rooms have views of a courtyard, garden, or pastures and are individually furnished with carefully chosen antiques. Some suites have a whirlpool or fireplace. The Fearrington House Restaurant serves up swanky, contemporary fare. An elaborate made-to-order breakfast is included in the room rate, with afternoon tea available. A two-story spa offers treatments to guests and the public. Flamingo Las Vegas

$ | 3555 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Las Vegas, NV, 89109, USA

This elaborately landscaped, pink, classic-era resort with a 15-acre pool complex (undergoing a major renovation at this writing) is still one of the best choices in town. Be sure to check out the on-site wildlife area, complete with a koi pond and, naturally, a flamboyance of Chilean flamingos. Fort Worden State Park Conference Center

$$$$ | 200 Battery Way, 98368, USA

The 330-acre Fort Worden, built as a late-19th-century gun emplacement to guard the mouth of Puget Sound, gained a new purpose when enterprising souls turned the spacious Victorian homes on Officers Row into some of the more memorable lodgings on the Olympic Peninsula. Besides the Officers Row choices, there are houses from the former NCO Row and assorted other duplexes, cottages, and loft apartments. Homes range from the one-bedroom Alexander's Cottage (built in 1883) to the recently remodeled 14-bedroom Reunion House that accommodates 29 and has a double kitchen. Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village

$$$$ | 2 Dole Dr., Westlake Village, CA, 91362, USA

This sophisticated resort with its wide range of amenities—indoor and outdoor pools, multiple delicious restaurants, art gallery, and a sprawling spa and salon—and whole-life wellness programming is technically one L.A. County valley over from The Valley. But as its where quiet luxury-loving denizens in the know go for self-care staycations through the Center For Health & Wellbeing (or to carb-load on the extremely talented pastry chef's breads and desserts in both the all-day café and California brasserie Coin & Candor), it counts. With ample meeting and event spaces, it's also popular with the conference and team-building crowd, which often takes advantage of included fitness classes, meditation sessions, the teaching kitchen, and hiking excursions in the bucolic Santa Monica Mountains seen out the windows of most well-appointed rooms. (Lower levels stare more directly at the lush landscaping and towering rock waterfall.) Although most of the hotel is aimed at pleasing adults such as live jazz at the speakeasy or in-room G&T stations, children will get a kick out of the game room with ping pong and free arcade games, kids' club, and The Cove, a sun-worshipper's dream sanctuary complete with mammoth pool, several hot tubs, hammocks, a bocce court, daybed- and lounge-covered terraces, and a restaurant serving house-made paletas, Wagyu cheeseburgers, and lobster tacos. Sure, it's far from the Hollywood and downtown sites but you'll be enjoying indulging too much to want to leave.

Pros

  • Giant gym includes yoga and spin studios
  • Even bigger spa and wellness program
  • Multiple restaurants

Cons

  • Overlooks the freeway on one side
  • Far from L.A.'s biggest attractions
  • Too few free weekend fitness classes

At the edge of the FiDi and Union Square areas, this boutique hotel manages to be both hip and welcoming, with modern touches on historical bones and cozy guest rooms with all the technological amenities modern travelers require. Guests lounge in the lobby by the hotel’s pièce de résistance, a massive, hand-sculpted art-nouveau fireplace that looks like it leaped out of a fairy tale. For guests visiting on business or working remotely, the marble-topped desks with ergonomic chairs (and the Illy espresso machine for caffeine) are a big plus.
