Gilmore Hotel

$$ | 326 Front St., Ketchikan, AK, 99901, USA

Crammed between the large buildings along Front Street, the Gilmore—which is part of Wyndham's Trademark Collection—is a rustic historic property best suited for travelers who value character over modern amenities. Glidden House

$$ | 1901 Ford Dr., Cleveland, OH, 44106, USA

For those who are skeptical of the rustic facilities and folksy banter common at many B&Bs—but who still want distinctive lodging and a personal feel—Glidden house offers a compromise. On the Case Western campus, the French Gothic mansion, built in 1910, has a traditional hotel staff and dining in its carriage house restaurant, Sergio's, which focuses on seafood and Brazilian fare. Rooms feature plasma-screen TVs and private baths. The modern room decor in particular is a welcome change from the often fussy look of some historic B&Bs. Suites are decorated more traditionally, and some have wet bars.

Glunz Ocean Beach Hotel and Resort

$$ | 351 E. Ocean Dr., FL, 33051, USA

The Glunz family got it right when they purchased this former time-share property and put a whole lot of love into ensuring it achieved its full oceanfront potential—from the bottom-floor rooms, you can walk out your back door and your feet are in the sand, or you can also chill at the oceanfront tiki bar or one of two heated pools. Standard rooms have a small fridge and coffeemaker; kitchens (in suites only) are well equipped, too. To stay like royalty, opt for the three-level oceanfront villas, each with 2,300 square feet and a garage. Hungry? Walk next door to Havana Jack's for fish tacos, or have the staff drive you via golf cart to the local bars so you won't drink and drive.

Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort

$$ | 2559 Main St., Lake Placid, NY, 12946, USA

The former Best Western Golden Arrow is under new management, and sits right in the heart of Lake Placid, on Main Street. Beautiful views of Mirror Lake are available from the lobby and some rooms, which have balconies. But what really sets the property apart is the owners' decision to go as green as possible. Expect recycled and ecofriendly gifts to greet you on arrival (perhaps a pine-tree seed in a terra-cotta pot filled with earth, for example). Have a seat at Charlie's, the resort restaurant, for a view of the green roof. The roof, finished in summer 2008, is an insulating blanket of plants grown on a flat section of the property's roof. Some of the herbs grown there might go into dishes served at Charlie's. Kids' programs are available.

Pros

  • Large, clean and spacious rooms
  • Easy access to Mirror Lake

Cons

  • It's nice to have a fireplace in your room, but the smell from others' fires lingers

The Gotham Hotel NY

$$ | 16 E. 46th St., New York, NY, 10017, USA

A sleek, modern boutique hotel, the Gotham has a lot going for it, from good-size rooms to nice amenities, but a clincher is that every room has outdoor space. There are no more than four rooms per floor, allowing families and larger parties to take over entire floors if desired. Upper floors have only two rooms per floor, both with terrific east- and westward views. Rooms are large—around 300 square feet—and include king-size beds, and gorgeous tiled bathrooms with rain showerheads and Molton Brown bath amenities. The location's past was a family-owned bookstore, so you'll come across some vintage books and its aptly named steak-house restaurant, The Reading Room. Parking is with an affiliated garage across the street.

Goulding's Lodge

$$ | Off U.S. 163, Monument Valley, UT, 84536, USA

With spectacular views of Monument Valley from each room's private balcony, this historic lodge often serves as a base for film crews in the area—and has for years, as cinema greats John Wayne and John Ford used to stay here. It has handsome stucco buildings and simple rooms decorated with Native American art. The best lodging deals here are the houses and suites, which offer full kitchens and much more space than the hotel rooms for not much more money. For a true sense of Goulding's beginnings and history, spend some time at the on-site museum. Also on the grounds, the Stagecoach restaurant serves the area favorite, a Navajo taco, along with many traditional American entrées. Goulding's offers custom-guided tours of Monument Valley and provides Navajo guides into the backcountry, where you're not allowed to venture on your own. The lodge is 2 miles off U.S. 163, at the Monument Valley Tribal Park turnoff, about 25 miles southwest of Mexican Hat.

Pros

  • Stunning views
  • One of the only lodgings in the park
  • Dark skies and quiet nights

Cons

  • It's miles from anything in any direction
  • Prices fluctuate wildly
  • You pay a high price for the unique setting
