This collection of historic farmhouses features rooms and suites dating from the 1850s to the early 1900s, renovated to reflect the ambience of their era while still providing modern-day comforts—perhaps the best one being the outdoor pool with a hot tub and swim-up bar. An on-site event venue called Fiddler's Gruene, which features a full-service bar, stage, and yard games, also makes the Homestead Inn a popular option for weddings and other events.

Built in 1948, this guesthouse contains a fine collection of art on loan from Williams College and the Whitney Museum, as well as a lobby that wouldn't be out of place on a 1960s movie set. Guest rooms feature private decks and expansive views of Mt. Greylock and the 315-acre property; two rooms have working tile fireplaces. Both property and clientele are upscale and fancy, which is probably why children under 12 are not permitted.

Art patron Mabel Dodge Luhan bought this house about a mile north of Taos Plaza in the 1920s and lived here with her husband, Tony Luhan, while building their main house; most of the rooms contain Pueblo-style fireplaces, Southwestern handcrafted furniture, and original artwork—a few have jacuzzi tubs. A step up from the Comfort Inn across the street, this fairly new hotel (built in 2006), has a large breakfast and lobby area and updated rooms in neutrals with cherrywood headboards, the Hampton's signature striped wallpaper, and large bathrooms with granite countertops, slate floors, and some Jacuzzi tubs. Some have views of trees and a cemetery. The hotel is entirely no-smoking.

Like many others in its chain, this Hampton Inn offers clean, modern and spacious rooms and breakfast until 10 am. You can enjoy it with a free newspaper.

The rooms and suites at this well-known chain hotel are a remarkably good value for Savannah's Historic District. The studios and one-bedroom suites have their own kitchenettes, making them ideal for families, and the beds are topped with soft linens. There is an adjacent parking lot and a small swimming pool but, alas, no restaurant or bar.

The free breakfast and the logo may be the same, but this Hampton Inn tries to be more urban and chic than others in the chain. In an early-1900s office building that lay vacant for many years, the hotel follows the historical direction of the structure, but keeps things contemporary. This 13-story, ornate, redbrick National Historic Landmark was built in 1913 as a luxury apartment building, hence the lobby's original marble and decorative ceilings. In 1986, the building was converted into a hotel, now operated by Hampton Inn & Suites, and rooms are sleek and modern, but the overall structure retains lots of Southern charm thanks to its ornate architecture and manicured gardens.
