Rancho Caymus Inn

$$$ | 1140 Rutherford Rd., Rutherford, CA, 94573, USA Fodor's Choice

A romantic hacienda-away-from-home that off-season may be the Napa Valley's best value in its price range, this upscale-contemporary boutique hotel near Inglenook and the Rutherford Grill contains rooms whose decor and artworks evoke the area's Mexican heritage. The large guest rooms—most split-level, all with patios, and some with vaulted exposed-beam ceilings—have textured-plaster walls, brown leather furniture, and contemporary variations on stovepipe fireplaces. Hanging plants, ceramic-tile friezes, a mass of wrought iron, and a series of graceful arches contribute to the movie-set glamour of the brick-lined courtyard that contains the rectangular wading pool and adjacent hot tub. The pool isn't huge, but it'll cool you off on a hot summer day, and the courtyard is a peaceful retreat.

Pros

  • Courtyard pool area
  • Smallest rooms are 400 square feet, with several 600 or more
  • Well-trained staff

Cons

  • All rooms have only showers (albeit nice ones)
  • King beds in all rooms (no sofa beds, though a few rollaways available)
  • No spa or fitness center

Painted eggshell blue, this historic downtown hotel was built around 1900 for wealthy urbanites on vacation—from the wide covered front porch, you step into a grand lobby with polished pine wainscoting, statement oversized cushioned red chairs, and a brick fireplace. Conveniently located right on 125th Street, The Renaissance New York Harlem Hotel is hard to miss, with its bright lights out front that read \"Victoria,\" an ode to being in the space of the famed Victoria Theater. Aside from its central location, one of the best perks of staying at The Renaissance New York Harlem Hotel is its connection to The Apollo Stages at The Victoria, which are accessible via the third floor of the hotel's building. On the fifth floor is where you'll find the hotel's front desk, along with a restaurant/bar, appropriately named The Victoria Theater Restaurant, which offers live music on select nights. The highest rooms can be found on the 27th floor, and when the elevator doors open, you're greeted with floor-to-ceiling window views of Harlem. The Restoration

$$$$ | 75 Wentworth St., Charleston, SC, 29401, USA Fodor's Choice

Charleston architect Neil Stevenson designed this boutique hotel to be swank and suave to the hilt, featuring several rooftop terraces with sleek sofas and prime views. Step inside the suites within this pair of 1800s buildings and you're in a world of exposed brick, warm wood floors, soaring ceilings, and swank decor. Rio Sierra River Resort

$$$ | 41997 Sierra Dr., Three Rivers, CA, 93271, USA Fodor's Choice

Guests at Rio Sierra come for the river views, the sandy beach, and the proximity to Sequoia National Park (6 miles away), but invariably end up raving equally about the warm, laid-back hospitality of proprietress Mars Roberts. The charm of many Three Rivers establishments is their nod to family vacations of 1950s California—in some cases because the places actually haven't changed since then—but Roberts's shabby-not-trying-to-be-chic aesthetic lends her inn a contemporary, lived-in feel. And that beach! From May into October it beckons so compellingly you might have to remind yourself you came here to visit the park.

Pros

Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia

$$$$ | 10 S. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA, 19107, USA Fodor's Choice

You'll feel like you're checking into the Pantheon when you enter this neoclassical hotel set in a century-old bank building—more than 60,000 square feet of Georgian white marble makes up the dramatic lobby; a 2015 renovation modernized both the lobby (textures reminiscent of currency, in a nod to the building's banking past) and guest rooms (work and play spaces, set in a contemporary neutral palette with metallic touches). Ionic columns ascending the height of nine stories dwarf the main lounge, and natural light cascades through the oculus of the 140-foot dome ceiling. A drink in the lobby is a treat, even if you're not staying here. Guest rooms are surprisingly small and could use some better soundproofing, but have modern touches like flat-screen televisions, glass-enclosed showers, and lighted makeup mirrors. Let them know if it's your birthday or another special occasion, and they should greet you with Champagne. Aqimero, the hotel restaurant, is a Latin grill with exciting food and solid cocktails.

Pros

  • Stunning architecture (the lobby bar is unparalleled)
  • Attentive and friendly service
  • Modern in-room amenities

Cons

  • Wi-Fi available for a fee
  • Elevators can be slow
  • Rooms are smaller than some luxury competitors
