The Society Hotel Bingen

$$ | 210 N. Cedar St., Bingen, 98605, USA Fodor's Choice

Featuring a converted 1937 schoolhouse and a ring of sleek cabins set around a spa and bathhouse, this stylish but unpretentious Scandinavian-inspired compound is a perfect base for hiking, wine touring, and chilling out on the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge. Like its sister property in Portland, the Society offers budget-friendly hostel accommodations in smartly designed group bunk rooms as well as private rooms with shared baths, but the gorgeous cedar cabins are a great fit if you're looking for something a bit swankier, as they have nicely outfitted kitchenettes and covered patios with hammocks and picnic tables. Sorrel River Ranch Resort & Spa

$$$$ | Hwy. 128, Moab, UT, 84532, USA Fodor's Choice

One of the premier luxury resorts in the Southwest, this swanky wellness retreat on the banks of the Colorado River is the place to be when you need to escape the modern world—so long as money is no object. It's 17 miles from Moab, and that remote setting is a big part of the draw. People come for the stunning landscape studded with towering red cliffs, buttes, and spires. The connected cabins have tall ceilings and are furnished with hefty log beds, tables, and chairs, along with western art and rugs. Some even have bathtubs with sweeping views of the beauty just out your door. In addition to a full slate of spa services, optional activities include river rafting, mountain biking, and even taking a UTV out for a spin. Kids can shadow the ranch's wranglers and watch as they feed the many animals that call the ranch home. The Sorrel River Grill offers upscale meals with seasonal ingredients, which you can eat on a pleasant porch overlooking the river. Southernmost Beach Resort

$$$ | 1319 Duval St., FL, 33040, USA Fodor's Choice

Rooms at this hotel on the quiet end of Duval—a 20-minute walk from downtown—are modern and sophisticated, and although the area around it gets some car and foot traffic, the property is far enough from the hubbub that you can relax but close enough that you can participate if you wish. Each room has a sophisticated color palette of blues and browns, which is a nice change from the standard bright, tropical colors found in other hotels. Many of the accommodations in the property's Guesthouses section—which encompasses 50 units in the adjacent Avalon and Duval Gardens properties—are adults only, and all include complimentary Continental breakfast. The Stanford Park Hotel

$$ | 100 El Camino Real, Menlo Park, CA, 94025, USA Fodor's Choice

With the university in its name and images of esteemed alums throughout the hallways, it's clear why many guests stay at this upscale boutique stalwart. The Stanford Park resides right at the border of Menlo Park and Palo Alto, across from Stanford Shopping Center. It’s part of the Woodside Group, a small collection of Northern California low-key luxury destinations. The hotel actually only dates back to 1985, but it feels like it should have opened decades earlier because the architecture is inspired by early-20-century California design visionaries Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck, lending a subtly grand air to much of the decor inside and to the shingle-covered exterior and well-appointed grounds. Among the many notable amenities, the on-site Menlo Tavern is a terrific spot for guests and locals to gather for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks.

Stephanie Inn

$$$$ | 2740 S. Pacific St., Cannon Beach, OR, 97110, USA Fodor's Choice

One of the coast's most beautiful views is paired with one of its most splendid hotels, where the focus is firmly on romance, superior service, and luxurious rooms. Impeccably maintained, with country-style furnishings, fireplaces, large bathrooms with whirlpool tubs, and balconies, the rooms are so comfortable you may never want to leave, and rates include a generous country breakfast, evening wine and hors d'oeuvres, and a late-evening nightcap. Kids under 12 are not permitted.

Pros

  • Incredibly plush accommodations
  • On a gorgeous stretch of beach
  • Fabulous on-site restaurant and Aveda spa

Cons

  • Among the highest rates of any hotel in the state
  • Not for families with younger children
  • About a mile from downtown

Stickett Inn

$$ | 3380 Rte. 97, Barryville, NY, 12719, USA Fodor's Choice
In a handsome building with rough-hewn columns holding up the front porch, this rustic-hip retreat in the riverside hamlet of Barryville has just four suites: one has a private balcony with a spiral staircase leading down to a hot tub, while another has a glassed-in steam shower and a cold-plunge trough tub. In another room, a rain shower is positioned above a round metal tub big enough for two. Best of all is the separate two-bedroom cabin, which calls to mind the region's kitschy motels with a Formica dinette set, cabinets covered with paint-by-numbers art, and an Elvis Presley lamp.

Pros

  • One-of-a-kind design
  • Friendly place
  • Walk to nearby eateries

Cons

  • Near to town so not very peaceful

The Stockade B&B

$$$ | 8860 Highland Rd., Baton Rouge, LA, 70808, USA Fodor's Choice

It may be named for the Civil War–era military prison that once occupied the site, but you definitely won't feel like a prisoner in this pleasant, tile-roofed, contemporary brick house on winding, oak-lined Highland Road. The wooded property feels charmingly secluded, and the entire house is filled with antiques and works by regional artists. The garlic-cheese grits at breakfast are renowned, and guests can receive a discount by booking directly with the B&B.

Pros

  • Southern hospitality and country elegance
  • Tasty breakfast including a spread of southern-inspired dishes
  • Property is on the National Register of Historic Places

Cons

  • Downtown sights can feel far away
  • Small property means you should book far in advance
  • Less food and beverage options available than other accommodations
