Southwinds Motel

$$ | 1321 Simonton St., FL, 33040, USA

Operated by the same company as the ultra-high-end Santa Maria Suites, this motel-style property is a good-value option in pricey Key West. Though some rooms have been updated with dark-wood furnishings, others still have older, white-wicker pieces. All, however, have 32-inch flat-screen TVs, and those with kitchenettes are spacious, with high ceilings and dining-sitting areas. Key West's famous South Beach and the Southernmost Point are just a few minutes' walk, and you'll find three pools on-site to keep you cool. If you're a light sleeper, the roosters may be a bother, but that's just part of Key West's charms. A modest resort fee gets you a simple breakfast and a voucher for a beach chair and umbrella at nearby South Beach.

Sparrows Lodge

$$$ | 1330 E. Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs, CA, 92264, USA

Rustic earthiness meets haute design (rusted rolled-steel roof, open shelving, concrete-pebble floors, gallery walls, and so many accent pillows) at the adults-only Sparrows, a restored 1950s retreat originally built by actor Don Castle just off the main drag. Rooms hug a central stone-tiled pool, an open-air barn/bar where guests converge for conversation and coffee-table books, an all-day kitchen, and sitting nooks near the vegetable garden. There are no TVs in the rooms, but the Wi-Fi is fast, and the sun-dappled courtyard is calling anyway.

  • Intimate property
  • Some rooms have private patios

Cons

  • Not family-oriented
  • A little too far to walk to downtown shopping and dining

Sperry Chalet

$$$$ | Glacier National Park, MT, USA

Having reopened after a major renovation, this rustic backcountry lodge, built in 1913 by the Great Northern Railway, is accessible only by a steep, 6.7-mile trail with a 3,300-foot vertical rise; either hike in or arrive on horseback, but meals are included; it's extremely popular and well-loved among park guests. Guest rooms have no electricity, heat, or running water, but who cares when the view includes Glacier's Gunsite Mountain, Mt. Edwards, Lake McDonald, and mountain goats amid wildflowers? Informal meals, such as turkey with the trimmings, are simple yet filling and included in the rates, and à la carte lunch service is available (11:30–5 daily) for non-guests. The reservations office is closed in September and October. Your best chance of getting a reservation for the peak summer months is to submit a reservation request in early January.

Pros

Spring Lake Inn

$ | 104 Salem Ave., Spring Lake, NJ, 07762, USA

A big front porch and unusual, angular-shape guest rooms make staying here a memorable experience. Most rooms are painted in bold, solid hues, tempered by light floral bedspreads and lace curtains. Some rooms have queen-sized sleigh beds, and all have gas fireplaces. Homemade baked goods are a specialty, with breads and jam served with breakfast and fresh cookies for afternoon snacks. At breakfast, ask for the inn's version of bananas Foster—thick French toast stuffed with cream cheese, flavored with rum extract, and topped with bananas. St. Francis Inn Bed & Breakfast

$$ | 279 St. George St., St. Augustine, FL, 32084, USA

This late-18th-century inn in the Historic District, a guesthouse since 1845, offers main-house rooms and suites, a room in the former carriage house, and a five-room cottage—all with a serene vibe and a delicious Southern breakfast buffet included. If the walls of the oldest inn in the Oldest City could talk, they would tell tales of buried doubloons and Confederate spies. Furnishings are a mix of antiques and just plain old; the food is fresh and well prepared (there's a chef on property). A stay includes thoughtful extras like free admission to the Anastasia Athletic Club; use of bicycles; complimentary admission to the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum; and an evening social with enough snacks, desserts, and house-blend coffees, teas, and hot chocolates to pass for dinner.

St. Michael's Manor

$ | 50200 St. Michael's Manor Way, Scotland, MD, 20687, USA

Joe and Nancy Dick have run their B&B on Long Neck Creek since the early 1980s—and they've harvested grapes from their 3 acres of vines nearly as long as that. Rooms, which overlook the water, are decorated with antiques and family heirlooms, the beds covered with hand-sewn quilts. There's a working fireplace at each end of the public space in the Federal-style main building. Nancy's eggs Benedict are always popular, and her airy Austrian puff pancakes over fresh apples or peaches are delicious. Upon arrival guests are invited to sample wine from the vineyards.

Star of Texas Inn

$$ | 611 W. 22nd St., Austin, TX, 78705, USA

A charming bastion of historic hospitality sits just off UT campus, amid the otherwise lackluster surroundings of student apartments and frat houses. The B&B operates two guesthouses on neighboring lots, but we recommend the original two-story Victorian house with wraparound porches. All rooms, furnished with antiques and vintage elements, have the same amenities and private bathrooms; most with tubs. Breakfasts, served either buffet-style or made-to-order, are delicious and the staff doubles as a knowledge resource for restaurant recommendations or directions to nearby attractions, like Pease Park or the Capitol. Downtown is a short drive away.

Pros
