The Standard Spa, Miami Beach

$$$ | 40 Island Ave., FL, 33139, USA

An extension of André Balazs's trendy and hip—yet budget-conscious—brand, this shabby-chic boutique hotel is a mile from South Beach on an island just over the Venetian Causeway and has among South Florida's most renowned spas, trendiest bars, and hottest pool scenes. The message: we'll do what we please, and the cool kids will follow. The scene attracts trendy 30- and 40-year-olds interested in showing off at the pool and then indulging in the hotel's many "do-it-yourself" spa activities, including mud bathing, scrubbing with sea salts, soaking in hot or arctic-cold waters, and yoga. An 8-foot, 103-degree cascade into a Roman hot tub is typical of the handful of adult pleasures on the pool deck. You can also go kayaking around the island. On the hotel facade you'll see the monumental signage of a bygone occupant, the Lido Spa Hotel, and the much smaller sign of its current occupant, hung, with a wink, upside down. Rooms are small and simple, though they have thoughtful touches like a picnic basket and embroidered fabric covers for the small flat-screen TVs. First-floor rooms have outdoor soaking tubs but very limited privacy, so few take that plunge. The waterfront, alfresco Lido Bayside Grill makes for great people-watching.

Pros

  • Free bike rentals
  • Swank pool scene
  • Great spa

Cons

  • Slight trek to South Beach
  • Small rooms with no views
  • Nonguests visiting property spa and restaurants

The 280-acre property, graced with fields and forested woodlands, has great views of the Alaska Range to the south, and in winter you can see the northern lights. It's clear from the get-go that owner Kory Eberhardt was born to run this lodge, and he'll happily share stories of his family's life here: his grandfather homesteaded the property in 1947, and his parents built the lodge in 1992 with trees hewn from the property. Accommodations include a remote cabin, a two-story log home, and the main lodge. Collectibles decorate the rooms, with an endearing predilection for Elizabeth Taylor memorabilia. Tranquil House Inn

$$$ | 405 Queen Elizabeth Ave., Manteo, NC, 27954, USA

This charming 19th-century-style waterfront inn would look perfectly in place on Martha's Vineyard and is just steps from shops, restaurants, and Roanoke Island Festival Park. Individually decorated rooms were updated in 2022 and sport clean, classic lines and muted colors.

Pros

  • Rear porches overlook the water
  • Complimentary evening wine reception
  • One of the town's best restaurants, 1587, is on the premises

Cons

  • No pool
  • Not a hot breakfast
  • Not ideal for beach vacations
